Cup final, seeing his kick saved by Wimbledon goalkeeper Dave Beasant. The following season Aldridge was on the pitch during the tragic Hillsbor- ough stadium disaster, in which ninety-six football supporters were killed. This event affected Aldridge profoundly. Within six months Aldridge had left Liverpool and signed for Real Sociedad in the Basque Country. During this same period Aldridge established himself in the Irish national team managed by Jack Charlton. It is not the intention of this article to explore just how Irish Aldridge ‘really was’ in the face of his birth, accent and home. They have produced a magnificent magazine which celebrates their 20 years and looks back at the journey. It is well worth a read if you can get a copy. As well as a lot of awful footballer autobiographies. In this crowded market it’s important to try to make your book leap from the crowd like Sergio Ramos at a corner and demand attention. A catchy, interesting title can help significantly with that. On the other hand, if you’re a footballer, you’re already instantly recognisable to anybody who might buy and read it anyway, and you have access to a loyal fanbase that consistently proves itself willing to part with hard-earned money for any old rubbish they are served up (bad performances, third kits, club shop tat etc.), so why bother? And not bothering is very much the watchword for many players who clearly think that a nice snap and a simple title will do. Hence the plethora of ‘My Story’, ‘My Life in Football’ or ‘My Autobiography’ efforts clogging up the shelves. Surely we can do better than that? We’re not saying everyone needs to call their book Snod This for a Laugh,1 but come on.

My intention is to expose the recent institutional exploitation of football's "cultural power" (Stoddart, Cultural Imperialism 650) and ability to impassion and mobilize the masses in order to maintain traditional concepts of authority and identity. The first chapter of this project will interrogate the exclusionary selection practices of both the Mexican and the English Football Associations. Both institutions promote ethnoracially singular understandings of national identity as a means of escaping disparaging accusations of "artificiality," thereby protecting the purity and prestige of the nation, as well as the profitability of the national brand. The next chapter will then turn its attention to FIFA's proposed 6+5 policy, arguing that the rule is an institutional effort by FIF A to constrain and control the traditional structure of football in order to preserve the profitability of its highly "mediated and commodified spectacle" (Sugden and Tomlinson, Contest 231) as well as assert its authority and autonomy in the global realm.

They were emerging as title rivals to Ferguson’s Manchester United and he was keen for Morgan to move to Old Trafford. Morgan chose Blackburn, signing for the Ewood Park side in 1994. A year later, Blackburn won their one and only Premier League title. But despite training with the league-winning squad, and making the bench for league and European matches, Morgan found himself released – and without a club – almost three years later. It was only weeks before captaining the Ireland Under-20s to a third-place finish in the 1997 World Championships in Malaysia. Put simply, Morgan fell by the wayside as Blackburn – and their Premier League rivals – regularly shunned the promotion of youth in favour of big-money signings.
