In their first game Home 2-2-2-1 at home in over two weeks, the Chiefs came out sluggish, getting behind 2-0 in the Away 4-4-0-1 first period before climbing back into the game, eventually tying it and forcing U.S. Division 3-1-1-1 overtime at 3-3. Both Yamamoto brothers scored, including Kailer’s tying with Western Conf 3-3-1-1 under four minutes left in regulation. Hudson Elynuik potted his 5th of the season Eastern Conf 3-3-1-1 as well. Michael Spacek won it for the Rebels on a PP in overtime. Lead after 1st 2-0-0-1 Lead after 2nd 4-0-0-0 Spokane hopes to repeat their last game against the Americans, as they came away with a decisive 5-2 win here at the Arena back on Oct. 1. Elynuik led the way with Tied after 1st 3-1-1-0 four points (1G, 3A) including the assist on team Tyson Helgesen’s game- Tied after 2nd 2-0-1-1 winning goal at the 5:25 mark of the third period. Kailer Yamamoto scored twice Down after 1st 1-5-1-1 and added an assist, Ethan McIndoe had two assists and a +3 rating, and Jayden Down after 2nd 0-6-1-1 Sittler made 30 saves in the win. Morgan Geekie and Dylan Coghlan scored for the 1-goal games 1-0-2-2 Americans. 2-goal games 2-2-0-0 3-goal games 1-1-0-0 It hasn’t all been rosy against Tri-City, however, as Spokane fell 8-3 in the season 4+-goal games 2-3-0-0 opener in Kennewick on Sept. 24, with Michael Rasmussen (4G) and Vladislav Score 1st 4-2 Lukin (3G, 3A) leading the way for the Americans. The Yamamoto brothers put in Overtime 0-2 one goal each, joined by Jaret Anderson-Dolan as the Chiefs’ scorers. Shootout 0-2 The young Chiefs hope their recent road trip through the East Division may have Red jerseys 1-1-1-1 built some chemistry as they pushed their road record to 4-4-1-0. They hope to White jerseys 5-4-0-1 build on that success at home, where they’ve struggled so far, losing 5 of 7 to start Blue jerseys 0-1-1-0 the year. They’ll need their home ice advantage this month, as they stray from Sundays 0-0-0-0 Spokane just once in 10 games (11/23 at Kamloops). Tuesdays 3-0-0-0 It’s been a tale of two teams this year for the Chiefs; in their 6 wins, they have Wednesdays 1-1-0-0 outscored their opponent 26-10, but in their 10 losses, they’ve been outscored 20- Thursdays 0-0-0-0 47. Spokane has actually fared better with fewer shots as they are 3-1-2-0 when Fridays 1-2-2-0 putting less than 30 shots on goal, but only 3-5-3-0 when they get 30 or more pucks Saturdays 1-3-0-2 through to the opposing . Spokane has earned a point in their last six games, with their recent back-to-back overtime losses preceded by a four-game winning streak.

TAKE NOTICE… Kailer Yamamoto has been on a torrid pace to begin his draft year. The third-year forward has 24 points (11G-13A; t- 3rd WHL) in 16 games to start the season, including 4G & 4A in the last five. He earned WHL Player of the Week honors last week. He has a team-leading 9 points during power plays and has been blanked from the stat sheet just three times. With a late Sept. birthday, he will first become eligible for the NHL Entry Draft in 2017. A Spokane native, he impressed in stints at international tournaments with Team USA (Five Nations, U-18, U-20 NJEC) and produced 128 points (42 goals and 86 assists) in his first two seasons with the Chiefs (125 games). Multiple news outlets project Yamamoto as a future first round pick, most recently Sportsnet’s updated rankings with him at 14th overall. WISH UPON A STAR… F Tanner Wishnowski, since being acquired by the Chiefs from on Oct. 17, has been a valuable addition, scoring a point in 5 of his 8 games (2G, 5A). He posted 2 assists in his first game as a Chief. COOL AND COLLECTED… Rookie defenseman and former first overall pick came into Spokane with high expectations and hasn’t disappointed. The 16-year-old has 7 points (1G, 6A) in 11 GP, good for 13th among WHL rookies. POWER REVERSAL… The Chiefs’ power play, after starting the season with 9 goals in their first 24 chances, has hit a slump, scoring only 4 goals in their last 38, including 0 over the last three games (13 PPs). The penalty kill, on the other hand, struggled mightily to begin the season (12 goals in 32 chances over the first 7 games) but has bounced back, allowing just 5 goals in their last 40 shorthanded situations, including a perfect 9-for-9 night at on Oct. 26. They now rank 13th (78.3%) in the WHL. BIG BROTHER… The older of the Yamamoto brothers, Keanu, has picked up 9 assists in 16 games including 5 power play helpers and a 4-game point streak in early October. Keanu is the elder statesman on this year’s Chiefs’ squad with 215 games played. The Yamamoto brothers have been left off the stat sheet just once this season, with one of the two recording a point in 15 of 16 games. YOUTH MOVEMENT… The Chiefs are one of the youngest teams in the WHL this season; 17 players born in 1998 or later, including seven 17-year-olds and three 16-year-olds. Nine of the 17 are WHL rookies. A WHL rookie has scored a goal for the Chiefs in 3 of their last 5 home games. BLACK & WHITE… Three Chiefs – D Ty Smith, F Koby Morrisseau and F Eli Zummack – were named by Hockey Canada to the upcoming 2016 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in Ontario (Oct. 27 – Nov. 5). Smith and Zummack are on Canada Team Black while Morrisseau is on Team White. Smith was also honored as team captain for Canada Black and tallied two goals in Black’s 4-3 win over Team USA to clinch their group on Tuesday. Both teams won in shootouts on Friday to advance to medal games; Black to the gold medal game vs. Sweden and White to the bronze vs. Russia. ROOKIE STANDS TALL… Rookie goaltender Dawson Weatherill made his first appearance as a Chief in relief on Oct. 7 vs. Lethbridge, jumping in at the 7:30 of the second period and was perfect to close out the game. He made his first start as a Chief the following night against the , making 31 saves on 34 shots faced, then stone-walled the in Kent on Oct. 11 with 44 saves on his way to 1st Star honors in a 3-1 win. Most recently, Weatherill made 24 saves in a 3-2 OTL to on Saturday. He ranks 9th in GAA (2.66) & 12th in SV% (.914). THEY’RE WATCHING… The Chiefs had five forwards named to the NHL Central Scouting’s preliminary “Players to Watch” list, as announced on Oct. 4. Kailer Yamamoto earned an “A” rating, indicating a potential first-round pick in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft. Jaret Anderson-Dolan got a “B” (2nd-3rd) while three players – Ethan McIndoe, Pavel Kousal & Jake McGrew – earned “C” scores. HIGHWAY TO HELGESEN… Third-year defenseman Tyson Helgesen was named the Chiefs’ team captain in a pre-game ceremony on October 1. He takes over for two-year leader Jason Fram. Helgesen scored the game-winning goal in his first game wearing the “C”; a 5-2 win over Tri-City. PREMIER PROSPECTS… Three Chiefs’ prospects – all forwards – competed for their respective provincial teams at the 2016 Western Canada U16 Challenge Cup. Carter Chorney (2nd Rd, 39th Overall in 2016 WHL Bantam Draft) scored two points for Alberta, including the GWG in OT of the championship game, Ethan Leyh (8th, 160th) racked up 3G & 4A for BC and Cordel Larson (9th, 186th) represented Team Saskatchewan. HURRICANE HUDSON… Chiefs forward Hudson Elynuik was selected in the third round (74th overall) in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft by the . The towering centerman scored 19 goals and added 25 assists in 56 GP last season, turning heads after the turn of the calendar year with a point in 17 of 20 games starting on January 9, including a 10-game point streak. Elynuik’s father Pat was the 8th Overall pick in the 1986 draft to the Jets & went on to play 500+ NHL games. ALL-AMERICAN… F Kailer Yamamoto played in the USA Hockey CCM All-American Prospects Game in Philadelphia on Sept. 22, featuring 42 of the top American-born prospects for the 2017 NHL Entry Draft. He finished with 2 assists and a +1 rating as his Team Howe lost 6-4 to Team LeClair.

NEW ERA… Long-time Spokane GM Tim Speltz announced on August 16 that he had accepted a job with the NHL’s Toronto Maple Leafs and would step down from his position with the Chiefs. Originally hired in 1990, Speltz reigned over a 26-year run of success rivaled by very few in the WHL, including 961 regular season wins, 23 playoff appearances, 142 playoff wins, seven trips to the Western Conference Finals, four to the WHL Finals, two WHL Championships and two Championships. Speltz is now the Director of Western Area Scouting for the Leafs, but retains his ownership stake in the Chiefs and maintain his home in Spokane. HEY MR. CARTER... Scott Carter was announced as the Chiefs’ new GM on Sept. 8. A Penticton, B.C. native, Carter boasts 28+ years of experience as a hockey scout, business manager and entrepreneur. He was an NHL regional scout from 1987-2015, President & GM of the Penticton Vees from 2004-2008, BCHL Executive of the Year in 2005, co-founder of the BCHHF in 1991, co-founder of the WPHL in 1994 and has been a full partner in Vaughn Custom Sports since 1996. NATIONAL NODS… The Spokane Chiefs had 6 players recognized with invitations to national team camps over the summer. Four players – D Ty Smith, D Matt Leduc, F Eli Zummack and F Koby Morrisseau – were invited to Hockey Canada’s U17 camp. Jaret Anderson-Dolan went to Canada’s U18 camp. Kailer Yamamoto competed at USA Hockey’s National Junior Evaluation Camp with aspirations to make this winter’s Team USA for the IIHF World Junior Championship. BENCH BOSS… returns to the Chiefs for his 7th season as head coach having recently signed an extension through the 2017-18 season. The WHL veteran ranks 1st in franchise history in career wins (240) and eclipsed this season for the all-time lead in career games coached for the Chiefs (439). Entering the season, his .552 winning percentage with Spokane ranked 2nd behind Hardy Sauter (.629). Nachbaur is one of four WHL coaches with 600+ career wins (671). He is also the winningest coach in Tri-City Americans history w/ 235. CZECH THEM OUT… The Chiefs drafted Czech teammates Ondrej Najman and Pavel Kousal with the 22nd and 82nd picks, respectively, in the 2016 CHL Import Draft. Najman scored 18 goals and 44 points in 38 games, including four multi-goal performances, and added three goals and three assists in five games with the Czechs at the 2016 IIHF U18 World Championship in Grand Forks, N.D. Kousal racked up 20 goals and 23 assists in the same 38 games, including a stretch in which he scored a point in 11 of 12 games. He recorded three assists with the Czechs at the U18 Championship. FAMILY AFFAIR… D Jake Toporowski has family ties to Spokane. The second-year defenseman’s father, Kerry Toporowski, played for the Chiefs from 1989-91, racking up 889 PIM (2nd in franchise history) including a single-season record 505 in 90-91. Jake’s younger brother Luke, who projects as a power forward, continued the tradition as the Chiefs’ 1st round (8th overall) selection in the 2016 WHL Bantam Draft.
