ESTIMATES & SMILES ALWAYS FREE 2 2224 6 RANCH MOBILE RECORDER JANUARY, 2019 C January Facts he 1st month of the year brings us New Year's Day, MLK day, and the excitement of new beginnings. T In the Georgian calendar, the calendar that most of the world uses, January is the very first month of the year. The name January came from a Roman god Janus. According to the Roman legend, in 700 B.C., the ruler Numa Pompilius gave 30 days to January. However, Romans later made January the first month of he year. Moreover, in 46 B.C. Julius Caesar added a one more day to January and that's why there are 31 in January today. January was known as the wolf month to the Anglo-Saxons because in winter, wolves came into the villages to search for food. It is the coldest month in the northern half of the world, nature is quiet and the birds travel less. Also, the years and woodchucks go into hibernation. However, in southern half of the world, January is the warmest month. During this time, unlike the northern half of the world, animals are active and plants are growing. Below are some fun facts about January: 1. The flower symbols of January is snowdrop & carnation. 2. January's gem is garnet which represents constancy. 3. The zodiac signs for January is Capricorn (December 22 - January 19) and Aquarius (January 20 - February 18). 4. The Common Sense by Thomas Paine was published on January 10, 1776. 5. On January 10, 1920, the League of Nations was established. 6. National Blood Donor Month 7. National braille Literacy Month 8. National Hobby Month 9. National Soup Month 10. National Staying Healthy Month 11. On January 8, 1798, Amendment 11 to Constitution was proclaimed which modified the Supreme Court's power. 12. On January 4, 1896, Utah became the 45th state. 13. On January 6, 1912, New Mexico became the 47th state. 14. January 8, Elvis Presley's birthday 15. January 11 - National Human Trafficking Awareness Day in the United States 16. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in the United State - third Monday 17. On January 2, 1788, Georgia ratified the Constitution 18. January 26 - Republic Day in India 19. On January 1, 1863, the Emancipation Proclamation was issued by Abraham Lincoln. 20. On the first Monday of January, Handsel Monday is celebrated in Scotland and northern England. New Year's is approaching, a time when millions of people will celebrate with food, new resolutions or even a kiss as the clock strikes 12. But how much do you know about the holiday? Here are 10 fun facts about New Year's. • The first New Year's celebration dates back 4,000 years. Julius Caesar, the emperor of Rome, was the first to declare Jan. 1 a national holiday. He named the month after Janus, the Roman god of doors and gates. Janus had two faces, one looking forward and one ...continued on page 8 RANCH MOBILE RECORDER JANUARY, 2019 C 7 looking back. Caesar felt that a month named after this god would be fitting. • Forty-five percent of Americans make New Year's resolutions. The top resolutions are: to lose weight, get organized, to spend less and save more, to stay fit and healthy, and to quit smoking. While nearly half of all Americans make resolutions, 25 percent of them give up on the resolutions by the second week of January. • Be sure to eat leafy greens on New Year's. Tradition says that the more leafy greens a person eats, the more prosperity he or she will experience (what an incentive for staying healthy!). Tradition also says that legumes bring prosperity because beans and peas look like coins. No wonder why so many people eat black eyed peas on Jan. 1. • Many people ring in New Year's by popping open a bottle of champagne. Americans drink close to 360 million glasses of sparkling wine during this time. The bubbly stuff dates back to the 17th century, when the cork was invented. • About 1 million people gather in New York City's Times Square to watch the ball drop. The Times Square New Year's Eve ball drop came about because of a ban on fireworks. The first ball in 1907 was 700 pounds and was lit with 100 25-watt lights. The current ball puts the old one to shame (thanks to technology). Today, it is covered in 2,688 crystals, is lit by 32,000 LED lights, weighs 11,875 pounds and is 12 feet in diameter. • Remember the last scene in When Harry Met Sally, when Harry references a song after he and Sally kiss? It was Auld Lang Syne, a song traditionally sung at the end of New Year's parties. Poet Robert Burns wrote it in 1788. Though most people do not know the words to Auld Lang Syne, the overall message is that people have to remember their loved ones, dead or alive, and keep them close in their hearts. • If Santa is the most common symbols associated with Christmas, then Baby New Year is the symbol most commonly associated with ... you guessed it, New Year's! Baby New Year is often seen in a diaper, black top hat, and a sash showing the numbers of the new year. Myth states that he matures into an old man during the year. • Make sure to be surrounded by family or loved ones on New Year's Eve. The first person you come across in the new year could set the tone for the next 12 months. This applies to couples, as well. If a couple celebrating New Year's together does not kiss, the future of the relationship might be splitsville, so be sure to lay one on your significant other. • At the Mummers Parade in Philadelphia, 10,000 participants step through City Hall and perform in unique costumes. The parade dates back to mid-17th century, incorporating elements from Irish, German, English, Swedish and other European heritages. The parade itself is divided into five divisions: a comic division, wench brigades, fancy division, string bands, and fancy bridges. If you are in the area of New Year's, be sure to check out this event. • According to statistics from the National Insurance Crime Bureau, vehicles are stolen on New Year's Day more than any other holiday. Don't think you old car is safe, either. In 2011, the 1994 Honda Accord was the most stolen car. To discourage car theft, make sure your car is in a populated area and always take your keys.

10 RANCH MOBILE RECORDER JANUARY, 2019 C New Year Traditions from Around The World Baby New Year Tradition Tradition of using a baby to signify the New Year was started by ancient Greeks around 600 B.C. They would carry a baby around in a basket to honor Dionysus, the God of Fertility and symbolize his annual rebirth. Burning "Mr. Old Year" In Columbia, Cuba and Puerto Rico families stuff a life-size doll with things that have bad memories or sadness associated with them, and then they dress it up in old clothes from each family member. At the stroke of midnight, this "Mr. Old Year" is set on fire. Eating 12 Grapes In Spain people eat 12 grapes as the clock strikes midnight (one each time the clock chimes) on New Year's Eve. This peculiar ritual originated in the twentieth century when freak weather conditions resulted in an unseasonable bumper harvest of grapes. Not able to decide what to do about so many grapes at Christmas time, the King of Spain and the grape growers came up with the idea of the New Year ritual. Eating Noodles Late on the evening of December 31, people of Japan would eat a bowl of buckwheat noodles called "toshikowhioba" ("Year-crossing noodles") and listen for the sound of the Buddhist temple bells, which were run 108 times at midnight. The sound of these bells is said to purify the listeners of the 108 sins or evil passions that plague every human being. White Clothes In Brazil most people wear white clothes on New Year's Eve to bring good luck and peace for the year that will follow. Gifts in Shoes In Greece children leave their shoes by the fireside on New Year's Day (also the Festival of Saint Basil in Greece) with the hope that Saint Basil, who was famous for his kindness, will come and fill their shoes with gifts. Carry A Suitcase In Venezuela, Argentina, Bolivia, and Mexico, those with hopes of traveling in the New Year carry a suitcase around the house at midnight. Some even carry it around the block to ensure traveling at greater distances. Burn Crackers The people in China believe that there are evil spirits that roam the earth. So on New Year they burn crackers to scare the evil spirits. the doors and windows of every home in China can be seen sealed with paper. This is to keep the evil demons out.

Don't Call The Old Coot By: Merlin Lessler

love wrong numbers. I had one the other night. "Hello," I said, wondering why I'd bothered to answer, thinking it was probably a telemarketer. I expected to hear, "It's your last chance I to protect your credit rating; you must act today to take advantage of our one time offer!" - "We need your help. Won't you please make a donation to the Clam and Oyster Foundation?: But, it wasn't. All I heard was a muddled, "Grmph-butch-is-at ooh?" I was relieved. I told the mumbler he had the wrong number. "I'm to thorry,: he replied. He didn't need to apologize; I was thrilled; I love it when it's a wrong number. I can get off the phone in a flash. With a right number, I have to listen, and sometimes even talk, turn down a request to do something or worse, agree to it. Even with a telemarketer, I have to listen long enough to figure out if I should hang up, make a wisecrack or lie - "Sorry! My wife just set her hair on fire taking the roast out of the oven!" And, hang up chuckling to myself. It makes me wonder why Alexander Graham Bell worked so tirelessly to invent such an inconvenient device; one that has been rudely intruding into people's lives for over a century. (He took credit for it anyhow; it was really invented by a little-known Italian mechanical genius, Antonio Meucci, 16 years before Bell patented it in the U.S.). But, I answered the phone the other night. I'm like one of Pavlov's dogs; I hear the bell and my arm shoots out and picks up the receiver even though my mind says, "NO!" For Over 3 Decades! 14 RANCH MOBILE RECORDER JANUARY, 2019 C am, more often than not, saying hello with dread and trepidation. I hate talking on the phone, even in the best of circumstances. Most old coots do. We have a hard time conversing when we can't look someone in the eye. Too much missing information; we can't see the caller, and even worse, the caller can't see us roll our eyes as they go on and on. They don't get the message to SHUT UP! It's why old coots have shifted to text messaging, those of us who have learned to use a miniature keyboard that is. It's true, we don't get to read the body language that we'd get in a person-to-person exchange, but even so, texting has a critical advantage over live phone conversations. You can delay your response and less likely to: #1 - prove how stupid you are, #2 - avoid agreeing to something you will come to dread, or #3 - be required to put on an Oscar winning performance and respond to the caller with, "I-a donna speak-a da-Anglish," which works okay with a telemarketer, but not very well with a relative asking to borrow the ladder. Wrong numbers are truly underrated. They're just the thing for me. all and ask for someone who doesn't live here and I'll give you a listen. (I've got nothing to lose.) Call and ask for me and you'll get the "hair on fire" routine. Have a problem with that? Don't call; send your complaint to [email protected]. I'll add it to the pile.

10 Fun Facts About Disneyland 1. Had Disneyland been built to Disney's original vision, it would have included Edison Square (showcasing the history of electricity) and Liberty Street (focusing on the founding of America). 10 Words that Will Immediately Make You Sound Old hanks to technology and the rise of social media, the English language is changing faster than ever. Want to close the generational gap? You'll need to strike some of these out-of- Tdate words from your lexicon. Pocketbook This European word dates way back to the 1600s, when it was used to describe a small bag used to carry coins. The name comes from - you guessed it - a small book that used to be carried in one's pocket, and also held bank notes and money. While your grandmother might still use the term, younger women tend to call their bags "purses" or "handbags."

Whippersnapper This word, which is an alteration of the term "snippersnapper," first appeared in the 1700s, making it abundantly clear that even our earliest ancestors were easily annoyed by petulant children. In its more modern form, the term relates to an overconfident child or young person who acts more important than he or she actually is: "That clueless whippersnapper doesn't know a darn thing about life!"

Tape If you came of age in the 1980s, chances are you still use the word "tape" when it comes to recording your favorite music or TV shows, as in, "I'm not going to be home tonight to watch 'Knight Rider.' Could you tape it for me?" With the advent of digital media, there's obviously no longer a need to record anything on magnetic tape, but still, old linguistic habits die hard.

Xerox Xerox launched its first commercially available copy machine in the 1960s. Due to its rapid success, the brand name Xerox soon became interchangeable with the word "copy," much like the brand Kleenex has become synonymous with "tissue." Today, there are many new printing companies on the market, and most workers refer to make copies as ... making copies. Therefore, if you ask a younger coworker to "Xerox" a document for you, you might be met with a blank stare.

Floppy disk If you used a computer in the 1980s and '90s, chances are, you used a square floppy disk for file storage. As CDs became for ubiquitous, the need for floppy disks faded away, so much ...continued on page 26 RANCH MOBILE RECORDER JANUARY, 2019 C 25 so that computers stopped manufacturing computers with built-in floppy disc drives. Asking a colleague to say something on a disk will certainly make you sound old, as tiny "thumb" or "flash" drives have since replaced bulkier storage media ... for now. These tech terms that make you sound cyber-savvy.

Stewardess In the early days of air travel, a woman who attended to her passengers' needs was called a stewardess. As years went on, the term took on a negative connotation, because of the restrictive emphasis put on the way women looked. as more men entered the profession, and as women fought back against gender bias in the 1960s and 1970s, the term was replaced with the more gender-neutral title of "flight attendant."

Grody In the 1980s, California subculture - in particulate, "Valley Girl: speak, began to spread East and into the vocabularies of teens across the country. Words like "grody," a synonym for "gross" or "revolting," became commonplace, much to the chagrin of parents everywhere: "Did you see Bridget's new outfit? It's totally grody to the max!"

Icebox Before people had refrigerators, they used to keep food cold by placing them in iceboxes, which, quite literally, were insulated metal or wood boxes that held large blocks of ice. Once hone refrigerators became more commonplace in the 1930s and 40s, iceboxes were no longer necessary. For those older folks who grew up without mechanical refrigeration, however, the word "icebox" is forever etched in their vernacular.

Dungarees Today, we called them "jeans," but people once referred to pants made out of heavy denim as "dungarees." The name comes from a cheap course type of cloth imported from Dongari Kilda, India. The word "dungaree" eventually transformed into "jeans" when clothing manufacturers became importing the cloth from Genoa in Italy, which is referred to as "Genes" in French. Despite its antiquated terminology, you still might periodically hear old timers referring to heavy work pants as dungarees.

Groovy The origins of this word date back to the jazz age of the 1920s, when it started as a slang term for good music - found "in the grooves" of a vinyl record. It gained widespread prominence during the 1960s and '70s, when it was used as a synonym for "excellent" or "cool." By the 1980s, the word was pretty much out of fashion. Today, if you refer to someone or something as "groovy" (without a hint of sarcasm, that is), you'll sound anything but hip.

28 RANCH MOBILE RECORDER JANUARY, 2019 C The rest is history his is the time of year we dream big, vow to make changes, create goals, and promise to transform into a new and improved version of ourselves. Then we allow life and other Tresponsibilities, naysayers, doubt, and fear to veer us of course. As you follow your bliss and explore your passions, draw inspiration from the following individuals who found success in spite of the odds against them: • Fred Astaire. He sang and danced his way into our hearts on the silver screen, but his fi rst audition for a major studio was a bomb. The executives were underwhelmed by his performance and off ered this critique of Astaire: “Can’t act. Can’t sing. Slightly bald. Can dance a little.” • Wayne Gretzky. Widely regarded as one of the greatest pro hockey players, Gretzky was considered too slow and too small at the start of his career. The popular opinion was he’d never be a success in the NHL. • Sir John Gurdon. He is a pioneer in the fi elds of nuclear medicine, cloning, and cellular development. Among his many honors are a cancer research facility named in his honor and a Nobel Prize. Yet Gurdon fi nished last in his prep school biology class because his ideas about science were not aligned with the curriculum of that time. • Im Dong-Hyen. This South Korean archer has won medals and set records. He even competed in the 2004, 2008, and 2012 Olympics—despite being legally blind. • George Lucas. There wasn’t a single studio in Hollywood interested in Lucas’ script for Star Wars. He endured four years of rejection before an executive at 20th Century Fox decided to give Lucas a chance—not because he liked the script, but because he liked Lucas’s fi lm American Graffi ti.

What you know CEO was asked by a new hire for any words of wisdom that would be helpful in devel- oping a successful career. “Never lose your sense of curiosity, and always be on the Aquest to learn something new,” was the executive’s reply. “When I fi rst started here,” the executive continued, “I never imagined that I would one day become the CEO. In fact, I wasn’t sure if the job I had was a good fi t, so I worked in diff erent departments over the course of a few years. Then I became curious, and everything I learned led me on a quest to learn more. “I talked with the salespeople and learned about the market for our products. I toured the factories and saw how the products were assembled. I even traveled around the world to visit diff erent vendors who supplied materials for everything we manufacture. “Being successful,” the executive said, “is not about what you study or what you read or what you think. It’s about what you know.”

26 26 532-0709 587-0876 [email protected] 32 RANCH MOBILE RECORDER JANUARY, 2019 C Coffee aids in kidney disease fight, study says mong coff ee’s health benefi ts may be a reduced risk of death from kidney disease, ac- Acording to the Healthline website. A study recently written up in the journal Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation examined data from 4,863 Americans. The subjects were divided into four groups. Group One consumed the amount of caff eine in one cup of iced tea per day. Group Two took caff eine equivalent to one cup of coff ee per day. Group Three had one or two cups, and Group Four had multiple cups per day. Subjects in Group Two, researchers found, had a 12 percent lower risk of dying from kidney disease. Group Three showed a 22 percent lower risk, and Group Four, which consumed the highest amount of caff eine per day, saw a 24 percent lower risk. Scientists caution that caff eine poses other health risks, and patients on fl uid-restricted diets should take coff ee into account of their daily fl uid in- take. Cream, creamers, and syrups can also cause problems for people with kidney disease, including increased phosphorus and potassium levels. Check with your doctor, as always.

Water might help reduce women’s UTIs omen who suff er from frequent urinary tract infections (UTIs) may fi nd relief by Wsimply drinking more water, an article on the WebMD website advises. A yearlong study in Europe followed 140 premenopausal women who experienced recur- ring UTIs at high rates. At the beginning, the subjects drank less than six eight-ounce glasses of water per day. As the year went on, half the participants drank slightly more than six glasses, while the rest kept to the same regimen. Researchers found a signifi cant reduction of UTIs among the women who drank more water per day. The average number of UTIs among subjects in the fi rst group was 3.2, but dropped to 1.7 for women whose water intake increased. “Drinking more water to improve one’s health is probably safe and, if tap is used, pretty inexpensive,” said one doctor (who was not involved in the study). “Producing additional urine—and thus increasing voiding frequency—may raise one’s awareness of the importance of keeping the bladder as empty as possible, which can help reduce UTIs.”
