PRESIDENt'S PRATTLE

Over the last year or so I have been on three trips (and am aware of others) where a native animal, usually a kangaroo, hasbeen struck by a car on the way to the start of a walk. This is often quite distressing to all those involved, particularly the animal, and has caused some substantial damage to cars. Several members are currently gathering information on how best to deal with the damaged cars and injured animals it is probably useful for all leaders to be aware of what to do. If you would like more information please seek advice from one of the comthittee members.

The best solution is of course to avoid the animal if at all possible. If anyone has any suggestions, drop a line to the Editor - IT could do with more letters to the Editor. I have noticed that most of the accidents occur on the way toa walk, when the driver should be less tired and more alert. Is there any real reason for this?

On a brighter note, the Ettrema Wilderness Area was gazetted by the NSW Government on 6 Apri 1992. This area covers the superb part of the Upper Ettrema and Jones' Creeks which were originally excluded from the park because of the presence of minerals and potential for mining. It now seems that the cost of mining would be prohibitive and the mine of Jones' Creek will remain as a disused historical site. We all owe thanks to those in the Club who campaigned in the seventies for the preservation of this very scenic area against the resumption of mining. CONSTITUTION CHANGES

If the copy of the Constitution of the Canberra Bushwalking Club Inc which you are holding has "Last changed - August 1989" after the title, you can now throw it into your paper recycling bin. The Club's Constitution is now the one which was published in the May IT 1992.

The following motion was published in the May IT, for submission at the June General Meeting: "That the draft Constitution as published in the May IT be adopted as the Constitution of the Canberra Bushwalking Club Incorporated". Moved: Alan Vidler, seonded: Janet Duncan.

At the June General Meeting, Janet Duncan, as a member of the Constitution sub-committee, presented each of the changes proposed and called for any questions or discussion. The above motion was then put to members at the meeting and carried without dissent.

The following motion was then moved by Mike Morriss: "That the Constitution sub-committee (Janet Duncan, Paul Edstein, Allan Mikkelsen, Sue Vidler and Alan Vidler) be thanked for the excellent work which they had done". The motion was carried by general applause.

WALK REPORTS Winter Solstice Feast - June 21st - MIEIG Despite spending Monday and Tuesday in out of contact in and Tim's and Kate competing expeditions, I still had a lot of names on my list by Thursday so late comers were referred to Tim. Then I went down with a "virus infection" and by Friday could barely manage a croak, I was looking down my list to see whom I could conscript to lead the walk for me. However by Sunday I was feeling somewhat better and the lovely sunny weather encouraged me to leave my sickbed

andgoanyway. -- -- -

We left from the Orroral Valley just after 9 am in separate groups. Gerald headed off with the fast party and was not seen again till we got to Cotter Gap, then I followed with the rest of my group and Tim's slow party followed on behind. We had a very pleasant stroll along road and track through the peaceful forest under a brilliant blue sky - very different from the cold winds and snow showers of some previous solstice walks. We were not very fast, I was breathing hard on the uphill sections, but got to Cotter Gap to join Kate's weekenders and Gerald's fast group at about a quarter to twelve, just in time to beg a cup of tea and start on the nibbles. Tim's group arrived some time later just in time for lunch. We were also joined by a few disreputable looking types, one of whom claimed to be a former walk secretary and another who is well known for Himalayan exploits.

The serious part of the proceedings then began with a huge quantity of goodies being disgorged from many rather large day packs. It would take too long to list all the food consumed but I was able to trade fondue for Sybille's-humus, Margaret's home-made soup and various other goodies. Wine flowed freely. I had read in the Canberra Times astronomy page that the solstice was at precisely 1.14 pm so shortly before that time the champagne was broken out (thanks to David for carrying a bottle of it for me). Then as soon as my watch showed 1.15 pm (it had been checked recently!) the loyal toast to the returning sun was held. Unlike some of the earlier trips his majesty received it in person as not a cloud was to be seen. Then some of the energetic types headed off

n rfl-- 3 to inspect the slit rock while the indolent remainder indulged in more eating drinking and talking. Various groups then gradually headed off back to Orroral but most of my party waited for the return of the rock explorers. -

I was near the rear of the returning group and was surprised to come across a group stopped at the little creek at the bottom of the steep descent from Cotter Gap. They were munching toasted marshmallows and we late arrivals were presented with some too. It was a fitting end to the day's convivialities. After that it was a gentle downhill walk back to the cars following a very pleasant trip in perfect weather. Vance Brown

Warm rock - June 4-8 - Oh, bliss. A trickle of water greeted us at Camp Hurley, promising comfortable camping amongst the magnificent mixed woodland of eucalyptus, callitris, black boys and a myriad of other species.

The Warrumbungles are special. For the climber this is where racing up cliffs gives way to something more akin to real mountaineering. Towering volcanic spires emerge from the surrounding hills. After you've got up your peak, you've got to get down. And the scale is mind-blowing for bumblies used to yo-yoing on Booroomba.

Our climbing party consisted of Ick ("I'll just put in another piece"), Grahame ("Oh, what am I doing here?") and me, the (almost) sole-surviving active member of the Geriatric Rockclimbing section of the CBC. Maureen provided intellectual backup.

First on our list of challenges was the historic pr Dark's Chimney on Belougery Spire. This was declared a vegetationous grovel, so we then quickly devoured our lunch sandwiches and headed up the greater purity of Vertigo. Into the lead went Ick as soon as the mental inclinometer ran off the scale.

Back in camp that night a wallaby chewed Ick's dishes while a koala amused itself on a grade 39 gum tree in the firelight.

Next day we trundled off to the greater heights of Crater Bluff. En route Ick headed for the loo at Balor Hut and a classic CBC separation situation ensued, with everyone eventually meeting up again at the foot of Cornerstone Rib an hour late. Still, it was only 10 o'clock! so lots of daylight left. Who could be bothered with torches?

First there was a doddle up two pitches. Then deep breaths. Ick took over and soon had himself so stitched onto the soaring arete that he couldn't move. Fortunately an invisible ledge appeared so he belayed while Grahame and I trembled in anticipation.

"Well you guys, it doesn't get any better". Such comforting words. We tip-toed vertically. Magically the holds appeared when needed.

After five pitches of space-walking, the angle did eventually ease off. 'By 330pm we were scrambling around the narrow summit, looking for the descent gully.

A long abseil brought us to the final ramp. How on earth did Dot Butler do all this barefoot and with a bit of hemp? We headed off around the base of the mountain just as it got dark. Thank goodness for half a moon.

Sensible people had left their packs at the base of the climb, where they were easy to find. The one with the addled brain had left his elsewhere. But the gods smiled again and he fell over it in the dark.

No torches, no matches. You can tell the wisdom of a party from other measures than its experience. We stumbled around in the blackness and eventually got back to camp at 9.30pm. Maureen was by then contemplating a solitary existence.

"Climbed out" was the popular verdict as the next morning's sun warmed the bush. So we all went walking - in different directions of course. But wasn't it an absolutely fantastic trip! Thank you guys for making it possible. John l'Ons 4

WALK PREVIEWS

August 29-30 - Ski tour - Jagungal from Guthega This is a classic trip for reasonably fit skiers of medium ability. Starting from Guthega Power Station, we will probably head over the Kerries, past Mawson's Hut to Strawberry Hill for a cosy camp among the snow gums. WALK SECRETARY'S WAFFLE
