S T C A L N R N SA INGLEY S T C VIEW FROM A L N R N SA THE CHAIR INGLEY SATURDAY 30TH JUNE 2018 Big thank you to the players, officials and supporters of Leigh East, Thornhill and Shaw Cross for agreeing to the scheduling of today’s fixtures. This is the first time we have had 3 open age teams play on the same pitch on the same day. Enjoy the feast of Rugby at the Arthur Miller. Welcome to the players, officials and supporters from Leigh East for this afternoons NCL Division 2 game. Leigh are currently in 12th place in the table having won 2 of the 13 games they have played. Leigh will be looking for revenge after we beat them on the opening day of the season. We sit proudly at the top of Division 2 after a fantastic and determined team effort 2 weeks ago to beat our nearest rivals Dewsbury Moor, on their own patch. July will be pivotal in our promotion bid. Next Saturday 7th July we host Crosfields currently 3rd, on 14th July we are away at East Leeds currently 4th and on 21st July we host currently 7th. These could be the 3 most important games of the season so a big support would be greatly appreciated. The Alliance and Academy season is also at an important phase of the season with the Alliance 2nd in their league having won six of the nine games played and the Academy in third place in their league having won four of eight games played. Well done to all the players and coaches and volunteers on what so far has been a fantastic season. The irrigation system is well on the way to being completed with all the pitch work done. All that remains is a water tank to be built, connecting to the water mains and the electrical system installed. Hopefully in a week to10 days it should be finished. The system should make a tremendous improvement to the pitch with us being able to get the required quantity of water on it. It will improve the grass density no end and hopefully make a far better surface for the players in the dry conditions. Our Ladies team play Leigh Miners in the Cup tomorrow 2pm kick off. Your support would be appreciated. Enjoy the game. CLUB LOTTO - Tickets are on the bar. Only £1 a go to win some cash. Enjoy the game. FORTHCOMING HOME FIXTURES Sunday 1st July Ladies v Leigh Miners - 2pm Saturday 7th July 1st team v Crosfields - 2.30pm Sunday 8th July Ladies v Hull - 2pm For junior, youth and ladies games see the club web site WE ARE A FAMILY CLUB SO PLEASE MODERATE YOUR LANGUAGE WHILST WATCHING THE GAME. A reminder from the league that the only people allowed in the dug outs are the head coach, assistant coach, physio and 4 substitutes. Penalties for breaching this will be severe. Spectators must remain behind the barriers and refrain from encroaching on to the field of play at any time whilst play is in progress. Supporting the Rugby League family & its community

Registered in England Number 130435 Registered Office Address: Westgate Brewery, Wakefield, West Yorkshire, WF2 9SW S A VIEW FROM T C A L N R N SA THE SIDELINES INGLEY BY PHIL HODGSON The 1978 Challenge Cup Final stands out in my memory, and not only because the match, between Leeds and St Helens, was a classic. It was my late brother Gary’s his first trip to Wembley and because he had to work at Ray Alan’s (a bloke’s clothes shop in the centre of Leeds) on the Friday he’d arranged to meet the rest of us in London on Saturday lunchtime, before the game. He came down with Jimmy Rea, who’d also had to work on Friday, and we had a few bevvies before heading to Wembley, where the boozing of course continued. Then on to the West End and Soho, where we carried on downing the pints before heading for the last tube, to travel back to our digs, which we all knew as Manuel’s, at Baron’s Court. This being our kid’s first trip, he didn’t know where Manuel’s was, which turned out to be a problem. Anyway, we were all on the Tube, swapping banter with other blokes from the north as you do, when Alan Richardson spotted that we were at Piccadilly and needed to change for the Piccadilly line. “Come on lads,” he shouted, jumping up, and we all scuttled for the door. Not, though, our kid, who had begun to doze off (a regular habit of his after a few pints, if truth be told). He turned round, saw us on the platform, smiled dopily, and waved. I smiled dopily in return, and waved back. Then our smiles dropped as we both realised that Gary didn’t know where he was supposed to be headed There were no mobile phones back then of course, so contact was impossible. Jimmy and I decided to wander around London hoping to bump into our kid. Maybe not the best solution. After about an hour we gave up and wandered back to Baron’s Court. The next morning, after breakfast, we headed back into central London, ready for a few more pints. I have to admit that the uncertainty about where by brother might be was beginning to bother me a bit. We talked about it and it was decided that I should phone home (we both lived with our mother at the time). So I did. “Hi mater,” I said. “Hello Philip,” said mater (she always leant towards the formal when initially addressing me, certainly if I was in her bad books, which wasn’t a good sign in retrospect), “how’s the weekend going for you all?” “We’re having a great time, mother,” I answered, easing off a shade at my end in the formal tone. “That’s good,” she said. “What about Gary?” I quaked a little. “He seems to be enjoying it,” I said. “Really?” “Yes.” “Well that’s funny, because he’s here.” Oh bugger. But at least I knew where he was. “There?” “Yes. In bed.” “Oh that’s where he is,” I said, trying to sound as if I’d suspected it all along. “We were wondering where he’d got to.” “I thought you might be,” said my mam. “He’s told me what happened. He got off the tube at King’s Cross, saw some lads he knows who were coming home, and got on the train with them. “Phew, that’s good,” I said. “Wish him all the best, mam, see you tomorrow.” And off we went to the pub.
