This will be the end of the 1,966 mile Pony Express Ride that began in St. Joseph, Missouri. The rider will enter Old Sacramento from the Amtrak station at 2nd Street / I Street and head west past the Rail Road Museum down I Street. The rider will then head south on Front Street to the finish at Front Street / J Street.

Saturday, June 29th – Pretty Muddy Women’s 5K (Granite Regional Park) Event Hours: 9:00 a.m.—4:00 p.m. Attendance: 2,500 Event Contact: Nick Ziebarth @ (312)636-1952 Officers: (2) SEU Officers

Pretty Muddy is a 5K mud run that takes place within the confines of Granite Regional Park. There are no road closures for this event, but there may be some traffic congestion along Cucamonga near the park.

The event is a 5K and 10K run to raise funds for the Northern California Chapter of the Scleroderma Foundation. The run is confined inside William Land Park, but does cross Land Park Drive several times.

Total Body Fitness is hosting the annual Triathlon. The swimmers and runners will be confined to the interior of Discovery Park. June 27—Hart Senior Center Closure The Ethel MacLeod Hart Senior Center, 915 27th Street, will be having an upcoming temporary closure due to a renovation project to replace the roof and heating/air conditioning system starting on June 27. Chinese pioneers in the Sacramento River Delta were a vital force in reclaiming land and made significant contributions to California agriculture, from farming to canning. Since the 1860s, settlers created Chinese communities throughout the region. Copies of Locke and the Sacramento Delta Chinatowns will be available for sale at the program.

CONTINUING EXHIBITIONS

“Super Bowls: The Art of Turned Wood” Through July 7, 2013 The 33 exquisitely turned bowls and other objects in this exhibition combine the beauty of wood with designs that accentuate wood’s unique properties. Wood turning, like other craft media such as glass and clay, came into its own in the 1960’s and 1970’s as a rich form of creative expression. Using a lathe to carve these one-of-a-kind pieces, the turners showcased here seek to capture the splendor and richness of their medium, while also striking an aesthetic balance of color, form, and texture. More so, the artists seek to communicate through each work – and honor the tree it came from.

“An Opening of the Field: Jess, Robert Duncan, and Their Circle” Through September 1, 2013 The artist Jess Collins, known simply as Jess, and his partner, the poet Robert Duncan, were one of the most fascinating artistic couples of the 20th century. Soon after they met in 1950, they merged their personal and artistic lives to explore their interest in cultural mythologies, transformative narrative, and the appropriation of images. This is the first exhibition to explore the couple’s artistic production and relationship. Through more than 100 individual and collaborative works of art and personal letters drawn from private and public collections, this exhibition also looks at their influence and unique position as precursors of Postmodernism. This exhibition is supported, in part, by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

“Folding Paper: The Infinite Possibilities of Origami” Through September 29, 2013 Dynamic, innovative, and exquisite – origami, or folding paper, is not only a sophisticated art form, but it inspires innovative concepts in math and design and inventions in engineering, architecture, and technology. The first major exhibition to explore the rich tradition of paper folding both in Japan and Europe, “Folding Paper” features approximately 140 works by more than 50 international artists. This groundbreaking examination of paper as a medium for endless creativity also includes origami-related woodblock prints, photo murals, and videos.

“The Epic and the Intimate: French Drawings from the John D. Reilly Collection Through September 29, 2013 From its founding in 1648, the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture was the center of artistic activity in France. Through 60 drawings by artists such as Simon Vouet, Antoine Watteau, Jean-Baptiste Greuze, and Edgar Degas, this exhibition from the Snite Museum of Art at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, traces the formation, triumph, and reform of the Academy, leading to the École des Beaux-Arts as it is today. At the same time, the exhibit showcases the artistic process as guided by the Academy's principles, from the artist's first thoughts through compositional studies, figure drawings, and finished compositions.

“Rob Barnard: Pottery as Pure Art” July 21 through October 20, 2013 This exhibition introduces to a wider audience the ceramic art of Rob Barnard, exclusively featuring works collected by Rob and Josseline Wood, who gifted their collection to the Crocker in 2010. In all, thirty-nine objects span 20 years of the artist's career in this, the artist's first exhibition devoted to his production. Barnard embraces the irregular and displeasing, often developing tensions in form that are meant for the viewer to resolve. He prefers the Japanese-style anagama kiln for his wood-firings. Final results encompass subtle lusters, drips of glaze, and flashes of color that draw the eye to the vessel's surface. While such forms may be reductive, they are also nuanced in shape, line, and curve. These are the ‘details that matter to Barnard, who believes pottery is capable of ennobling daily rituals and feeding the senses.

“High School Self-Portrait Show” Through July 21, 2013 Reception: Sunday, July 21, 1 – 3 p.m. Comprising 50 artworks in diverse media, this exhibition presents a comprehensive view of an essential exercise for any young artist: the self-portrait. Self-expression and technical skill align to present a snapshot of self-discovery. Long a Sacramento tradition, the Crocker is proud to again host this exhibition, presented in collaboration with Chalk It Up! and Christian Brothers High School.

“The Perspective of Color” July 25 through October 13, 2013 Reception: Sunday, September 15, 1 – 3 p.m. Explore the influence of color on the artist and viewer in this multi-faceted exhibition featuring artwork by a local collective of adult artists. Artists’ Collective Natomas is a community organization of non-professional artists creating in the greater-Sacramento area. While their backgrounds are diverse, they are bonded together by a love and appreciation of art, the expression of art through mixed media, and each member’s personal artistic journey.

Icons in Conversation: Don Bachardy Saturday, June 29, 2 p.m. This series of intimate conversations with well-known figures in the arts offers rare insights from artists in their own words. The Art of Parenting: Let’s Get Crafty Sunday, June 30, 1 – 3 p.m. Crafting strengthens family bonds, supports child development, and provides parents/caregivers with a creative outlet.
