The DignityUSA Board of Directors meets October 12-14, 2007, in Happy Anniversary Washington, DC. Board Meetings are open to all members. If anyone is inter- & Congratulations to: ested in attending, please contact the DignityUSA Secretary for details:

I am writing to let you know about an important change in our policies that will affect every member and chapter of DignityUSA. Over the past four years, we have tried a bold new experiment in an effort to increase our membership and the influence of DignityUSA by having a no-minimum-dues policy. Although this resulted in a significant increase in the number of members for a couple of years, it did not translate into the ongoing level of financial support necessary to fund the core mission of DignityUSA. Therefore, after careful analysis and thorough discussion within the Board of Directors and at the membership meeting during this summer’s convention in Austin, Texas, the Board has determined that we must return to a fixed dues policy.

Dues will be $50 per year for each member. Our new policy will be similar to what existed prior to the no-minimum-dues policy, but simpler and more user-friendly. If a member designates a chapter, $10 of that member’s $50 dues will be returned to her or his chapter. DignityUSA will continue to maintain membership lists for each chapter and send them out on a monthly basis. Chapters remain free to set their own local dues level, if any.

Individual membership renewal/anniversary dates will not change. Mem- bers will be asked to renew their membership by paying $50 in dues when they National receive their renewal notices during the course of the coming year. Day Thursday, I want you to know that we have scrutinized every aspect of our finances October 11, 2007 and taken every possible measure to reduce our operating expenses, including moving our national office to the Dignity/Washington Center. As of October 1, we will be moving many of our administrative operations to the home of our new office manager, outgoing Vice President Peggy Burns, in Boston.

We have taken advantage of technology to rely on electronic communica- tions and have reduced our physical mailings as much as possible. In addition, all officers and other Board members now pay all of their own expenses to attend Board meetings. Yet even these considerable savings have not resulted

in sufficient financial resources to carry out our mission of being the prophetic voice and independent spiritual home of LGBT Catholics throughout the United States. If we do not speak, who will?

Starting on October 1, a great new team will be taking up the mantle of leadership for DignityUSA. We all have great hopes for our new officers and board, who will be led by President Mark Matson of Columbus (OH) and Vice President Lourdes Rodriguez-Nogues of Boston.

Furthermore, the Board hopes to hire a new executive director by early next year. We have a very exciting candidate who we are sure will be enthusi- astically welcomed by all of you. We are able to consider this step because of the amazing generosity of our members at our recent national convention. More than $150,000 was pledged over the next three years for the purpose of funding the executive director position. However, we will also need additional financial support from all of our other members in order to make the new exec- utive director a reality and maintain our other vital programs and activities.

All of us on the Board are very encouraged by these developments and believe they will help us re-energize DignityUSA as we approach our fortieth “We ask for your support of anniversary in 2009. If you have questions about the new policy, please feel free to contact any officer or board member. Be sure we have your e-mail address on our DignityNews list. It has been my privilege to serve as the president and one of the leaders of DignityUSA for the past four years. As I prepare to step down from my current role, I have renewed my commitment to support our remarkable organization financially and to continue serving in various ways. I trust that you will do the same through the many seasons of your life and the cycles of our organization.

As always, thank you for your prayers, your continued generosity and everything you do for DignityUSA.

Reminder to Dignity Chapters — Small organizations must file new IRS e-Postcard

Under new Internal Revenue Service (IRS) regulations that went into effect on January 1, 2007, some previously exempt organizations must now file a ver- sion of the IRS Form 990. The Form 990-N, or Electronic Notice (e-Postcard) for Tax-exempt Organizations Not Required to File Form 990 or 990-EZ, requires organizations with revenue under $25,000 to submit basic details about their organization’s operations. While there are no financial penalties for not filing this form, organizations that fail to do so for three consecutive years will lose their tax exempt status. The IRS began mailing informational letters to affected organizations last month and plans to send further updates once the online system for filing the new e-Postcard is available for use. Dignity-Integrity/Rochester (NY) By Michael Nicosia, Chaplain

On September 9, 2007, Dignity-Integrity/Rochester marked its 32nd Anniversary as a small faith community of lesbian, gay, straight, bisexual, transgendered and intersexed people. The celebration began at St. Luke and St. Simon Cyrene Episcopal Church (“2-Saints”) with a Roman Catholic Liturgy of the Word. The order of service was developed over the years since the Rochester was pressured to forbid priests’ sacramental ministry to the chapter. It follows the diocesan guidelines for Sunday Celebrations in the Absence of a Priest, which our Chaplain Michael J. Nicosia helped to develop while serving on the Diocesan Liturgy Commission. (Other chapters in similar straits are welcome to use it or adapt it to their needs.) Local pastoral minister and long-time ally, Dr. Deni Mack, was the guest presider and homilist for the liturgy, which concluded with the Magnificat of Queer Pride written for the chapter this past summer.

A reception followed in 2-Saints’ Fellowship Hall, after which attendees joined others at an anniversary banquet at a local restaurant. The celebration “Integrity, Inc. Did you know that the national headquarters of Integrity, Inc. is in Rochester?! National Administrator John Clinton Bradley joined the festivities and noted that Rochester has one of the oldest chapters in the country, and one of only three joint Dignity-Integrity chapters. John impressed upon the mem- bership that, while Rochester’s Episcopalians are truly blessed, the wider Church is in crisis — segments of the world-wide ’s leadership are trying to pressure the of the Episcopal Church to adopt a moratorium on consecrating gay and lesbian bishops and on the blessing of same-sex unions. Integrity asks all concerned Episcopalians to write their bishops, encouraging them to stand firm and join the clergy and lay leadership in their affirmation of the wholeness and holiness of our lives, our loves and our gifts. Bringing the message where it needs to be heard most, Dignity/Twin Cities (MN) will be handing out Solidarity Sunday prayer cards and rainbow ribbons at The Cathedral of St Paul at the noon Mass, Sunday, October 7, 2007. In a similar effort at prayer and reconciliation last year on Solidarity Sunday, the presiding priest at the Mass stated from the pulpit after the homily that the people (Dignity members) handing out the prayer cards and ribbons had noth- ing to do with the cathedral, and anyone wearing the one-inch long ribbons would be denied communion.

As part of its 33rdAnnivesary Celebration, Dignity/Twin Cities will be having a special liturgy and social hour on October 12, 2007, 7:30 p.m., at Prospect Park United Methodist Church, their regular meeting site. All are invited to the Mass and the social hour afterwards.

National Religious Leadership Roundtable Members Issue Response With permission from National Gay and Lesbian Task Force

On September 27, 2007, The Task Force issued a press release under the title “Episcopal Church House of Bishops’ response to directive on openly gay bishops and same-sex unions ‘a grave contradiction.’”

“WASHINGTON, Sept. 27 — National Religious Leadership Roundtable members today expressed deep disappointment at the Episcopal Church House of Bishops’ response to the directive issued by the leaders of the Anglican Communion to stop consecrating openly gay and lesbian bishops and to ban blessings of same-sex unions. Call to Action National Conference — Nov 2-4, 2007

From Racism to Reconciliation: Church Beyond Power and Privilege

The Call to Action National Conference will be held in Milwaukee, WI, November 2-4, 2007. This year’s theme — From Racism to Reconciliation: Church Beyond Power and Privilege.

“We are a Church always in need of reform, said Vatican II. Always. Ecclesia semper reformanda. To be faithful Church, beyond power and priv- ilege, we do battle with sexism. Classism. Heterosexism. This year, we are called to confront our racism. Why are we, in Call To Action and in the Amer- ican Catholic Church, still overwhelmingly white, when the human family is predominantly people of color? Even our nation will cease to have a white majority in 2020 — just 13 years from now!

“Dismantling racism looms large in the conference, but the other priorities of CTA are not forgotten: there are sessions about women's ordination, demo- cratic church governance, peacemaking and the war, and the rights of GLBT persons and couples.”

Dateline October 2007 - 9 - Fortunate Families Parents Voice Project Survey Report By Casey Lopata1, Fortunate Families Cofounder and current board member, with permission

Executive Summary

This is a report on the responses of Catholic parents of lesbian, gay, bisex- ual, and transgender (LGBT) daughters and sons to a survey conducted by Fortunate Families2. From July 6 to September 19, 2006, 229 parents submit- ted surveys. Though not a random sample, the findings can likely be viewed as representative of a great many faithful Catholic parents who love both their LGBT children and their Church.

Significant findings

• Parents are significantly more comfortable now than when they initially learned they had a LGBT child. Parents now are quite comfortable with having a LGBT child, and only slightly less comfortable with others knowing that. • Parents who know at least one other parent of a LGBT person are signifi- cantly more comfortable now—both with having a LGBT child and with others knowing—than parents who know no other parents. • Parents with a higher comfort level now were more likely to have shared their story, to have found sharing helpful, and to feel sharing is important. Most helpful to parents was sharing with immediate family, friends, and other MISSION Catholic parents. Least helpful was sharing with civic officials, Catholic psychologists, and their bishops.
