ìIf you have knowledge, let others light their candles in it.î - Margaret Fuller And then seemingly from the darkest pits of ignorance did it rise. Torn and bruised by the constant fight for survival, struggle for existence. It let go an enormous grunt then. Victory was sweet. Slowly, it walked over its foe, trampling over its sinful guts. The dark clouds now gradually owned up a new world order. A decisive victory had been announced and it proudly fluttered its victory flag. The lifeless forms of imperceptions lay all over the bloodied land. The far off bugle was no longer a distant triumph. The sun shone brightly over the rebirth of an era. Here, the soul was the perfect companion to the ever inquisitive mind. Here, questions were revered and answers worshipped. The land of learning was now a reality and not a dystopian myth – clasped in the realm of unimaginable half-truths. It now lorded over all. With pride. I have no form. I am the water that takes the shape of the container. I am the wind that blows through the sands of time. I am the earth that nourishes. I am the fire that enlightens. I am space; boundless, enigmatic. I am you. I am knowledge. Tel: 01928 718834 Chester Diocesan Board of Finance is a company limited by guarantee registered in England (no. 7826) Registered charity (no. 248968) Foreword I’ll never forget, after a long walk with my Dad, in Pendle, Lancashire, sipping a pint in a pub and chatting to the locals. Five minutes later I was surprised to turn to see my Dad placing his arthritic hand into the dirty palms of a particularly burly local farmer as they bowed their heads in prayer. I didn’t quite know where to look or what to do, so I lowered my head and kept quiet. It seemed like the right thing to do, and it helped me avoid the gaze of the growing number of amused boozy onlookers. That was my first and slightly embarrassing introduction to prayer. Since then I’ve travelled a long way, but I still remember the first tentative steps I took for myself. I also remember just how uncomfortable and alien praying felt to me. For those well versed in the lifelong discipline of prayer, it can perhaps be easy to forget just how strange the whole thing can be to start. I am grateful to one good colleague from many years ago who shared with me the William Temple quote: ‘When I pray, coincidences happen, when I don’t they don’t.’ As you pray during this period, please pray for those who are just starting and giving it a go.

15 September 2019 Davis Cup Group I and Group II results The ITF has announced the results from the Davis Cup Group I and Group II ties taking place on 13-15 September. Nineteen ties took place this weekend. The 12 Group I winning nations will contest the Davis Cup by Rakuten Qualifiers on March 2020, while the losers will play in the new World Group I Play-offs alongside the 12 winners of Group II ties. The weekend’s results mean that, to date, 10 nations – Austria, Belarus, Brazil, Czech Republic, Ecuador, Korea Republic, Slovakia, Sweden, Uruguay and Uzbekistan – have secured a place in March’s Qualifiers. Hungary’s Europe/Africa Group I tie with Ukraine was suspended due to bad light with Attila Balazs of Hungary leading Ilya Marchenko 64 5-5 in the decisive fifth match. The tie will be completed on Monday. The remaining Group I tie between Pakistan and India is scheduled to take place in November. Meanwhile, eight Group II ties were completed this weekend, with Bolivia, Chinese Taipei, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, Slovenia, South Africa and Turkey all securing a place in next year’s World Group I Play- offs. In addition to the Group I and Group II ties, three regional group events were held this week, with all three concluding on Saturday. In Europe Group III four teams (Estonia, Greece, Latvia and Poland) have gained promotion to March’s World Group II Play-offs, where they will be joined by Kenya and Tunisia, who were victorious in Africa Group III. In Asia/Oceania Group IV, Jordan and Pacific Oceania won promotion to Group III.
