DearAmerica, It is with great anticipation that I write this letter after having been engaged in so many discussions, blogs, blurbs, technology opts and the like regarding the state of our affairs in America. We find ourselves in the pocket of some deep stuff that seems to continue to get deeper the longer it goes on. However, this political charge that seems to have invaded our homes, jobs, institutions and corridors will not go away. It is here to stay and, for good reason, we have all found ourselves wrapped up in it in ways that we have never been before. I challenge you not to be judgmental before you finish reading this letter because it is written with you in mind. I have stopped at the water fountains, throughout airports, department stores, restaurants, and God knows where else, and all of the conversations seem to be unanimously centered on “politics”, a new nation of believers. It is without provocation that I have always found myself having to refocus each time I have encountered these thoughts. So here I am feeling compelled to write to you. I have through the years been politically active. But now America, it seems as though all of that ugly racial stuff that I had been introduced to during my formative years growing up in a small town of Samson, Alabama, which I learned to filter harshly yet appropriately, has brought me to a place of honoring the reality that “America’s racism” has a different face. America, you fooled us! And here we thought that we would never see the day when America would join hand in hand and call those things that are not what they were. America, you fooled us! But many have linked Obama’s candidacy to be the epitome of what Dr. King’s “I Have Enroll now! a Dream” speech was about; I believe that it is only a miniscule portrait of Dr. King’s speech. 419.474.3995 I dare not minimize its value to Black America, America, or the world. But Senators Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton’s struggle to overcome their fears, www.ymcatoledo.org racism and hatred is the same as is shared by many Americans who dream. Their dream may have been deferred or delayed, but they were not denied. We must all learn to celebrate each others dreams. But America, you fooled us! Why now – 389 years after approximately 20 blacks from a Dutch slaver were purchased as indentured workers for the then-English settlement of Jamestown, VA? Simply put, this is purely symbolic. Yet, the work of the average slave was more than substantive. Our ancestors deserve a substantive apologetic action. If we are seriously interested in honoring their forced service to this country and the economy of the South, it is only fair.

Wisdom Gained From Cherly A. Toler Bahama Boyhood March 17, 1956 – September 12, 1993 Special to The Truth Sidney Poitier, a great-grandfather and the first black actor to win the Academy Award for Best Actor, has a remarkable new book out that should be a popular read on Father’s Day. The New York Times best-selling author and one of America’s most- esteemed actors offers lessons from his remarkable life in the form of letters to his great- granddaughter. His latest book, “Life Beyond Measure: Letters to My Great-Granddaughter” (HarperOne), follows on the heels of the enormous success of “The Measure of a Man”—which spent 33 weeks on the best- seller list in both hard- cover and paperback and 13 weeks at No. 1 Written to his new great-granddaughter and namesake, Sydney Ayele LaBarrie, Poitier offers perspective and wisdom gained from his boyhood in the Baha- mas, breaking the race barrier in theater and film during the Civil Rights Era, achieving stardom and success in Holly- wood, and as a diplomat and humanitarian. In his role as father, grandfather and great- grandfather, he shares personal stories for those important passages through life, as he ex- plains: “You will have questions after I’m gone. I hope I might be able to provide some answers herein.” Critics have called this the perfect book to in- spire readers to live life to the fullest.

ig sister, it has been 15 years since you left us. I miss you dearly. You left a huge void in my life not only as a sister, but also as one of my closest friends! Much Blove always from your baby sister Cynthia Toler, your mom Mary L. Toledo, your brothers and sisters and your daughter Jamee’ Temple.
