School Profile 2017-2018

Mission Jesuit High School, in its mission as a Catholic, Jesuit, college preparatory school, labors to form men engaged in the world who are dedicated to serving God by being open to growth, intellectually competent, religious, loving, and just.

School Community Established in 1899, Jesuit High School of Tampa is a college preparatory school for male students in grades 9-12. Its forty-acre campus is located in a residential section of the city. Enrollment is limited to approximately 800 students, all of whom commute to Jesuit from throughout a five-county area of greater Tampa Bay. This year, the Jesuit student body is comprised of more than 30% students of color, and 27% of our students benefit from $1.86 million in financial aid.

Tenets of Jesuit Education Graduates of Jesuit High School are distinctly and profoundly formed in an educational environment inspired by the life and teachings of St. Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus.

As a Jesuit institution, several concepts are central to the dynamic culture of our school: cura personalis, our focus on the holistic well-being and personal growth of each individual; Magis, the idea that though perfection is unattainable, we nonetheless seek “the more, the better, the greater” in every area; Men for Others, the firm belief that our faith calls us to live in perpetual service of our shared humanity; Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam, the knowledge that everything we do is for the greater glory of God.

Our consistent focus in and out of the classroom on “evaluation through reflection for the sake of action” is inspired especially by Ignatius’ epic guide to self-reflective prayer, The Spiritual Exercises.

These concepts and others inspire our daily works, and guide the manner in which our college preparatory curriculum is structured to follow the Ignatian tradition of education.

The Jesuit Student As the phrase Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam indicates, our Catholic faith informs everything we do. In seeking to curate a well-rounded experience for each of our students, we believe strongly that faith, and pursuits related to enriching our faith community, be kept at the center of each young man’s personal formation.

As such, our students are extensively engaged in their faith, both in and out of the classroom, with each endeavor requiring significant commitments of time and energy. Below is a brief overview of faith life at Jesuit:

Theology requirement: Each year, students must study two semesters of intensive Theology. Beginning freshman year and continuing through senior year, students are immersed in the inquisitive, reflective, dynamic intellectual rigor that is characteristic of the rich 450-year history of the Jesuit Order.

Retreat requirement: Through our robust Campus Ministry program, students must complete at least one 2-5 day retreat during each of their four years, in addition to any required retreats held by athletic teams or other clubs. Retreats provide a crucial respite from demanding schedules, and allow for deep and meaningful reflection in the tradition set forth by St. Ignatius of Loyola. Retreats allow students time to recharge, and provide students space and guidance for essential personal growth. For reference, our most highly-involved students participate in multiple 2-5 day retreats each semester.

Service requirement: Service is central to the goals of Jesuit education. Community service requirements are as follows, though students often exceed these minimums. 9th grade: 10 hrs. 10th grade: 20 hrs. 11th grade: 40 hrs. 12th grade: 80 hrs.

Peer Ministry: Members participate in at least one retreat per year, and also organize and direct each retreat. Peer Ministry meets at least weekly, and more often immediately prior to a retreat.

Altar Servers: Members assist during daily and school-wide monthly masses.

Agmen Christi: Under the leadership of the school’s President, Agmen Christi is a selective, invitation-only group, which seeks to train leaders of each grade level in servant leadership. Significant time commitment is expected of members, including extended service trips on weekends.

Mission & Immersion trips: Selection for these trips is highly competitive. Both an application and an interview are required. Last year, teams spent time in Appalachia (GA), Aiken (SC), Havana (Cuba), Matagalpa (Nicaragua), and Rosebud Indian Reservation (SD). Trips usually last for one week during the summer.

Selective Admission All students are admitted through a highly competitive admissions process. Our Admissions team assesses scores from a standardized placement test, previous academic performance, and the student’s potential to succeed in a demanding college preparatory environment. In the interest of cultivating a cohesive four-year experience of formation for our students, very few transfer students are accepted.

Graduation Requirements Each student must complete the following requirements in order to earn a Jesuit diploma. A unit of 0.5 credits corresponds to one semester’s study in any given subject.

English 4.0 credits Electives (senior year) 2.0 credits Mathematics 4.0 credits P.E. and Health 1.0 credits Theology 4.0 credits Speech; Art or Music 1.0 credits Social Studies 3.5 credits Computer Science 0.5 credits

A Note on Course Selection In the Jesuit tradition of cura personalis—“care for the whole person”—we advise our students on a highly individualized basis, including when guiding a student’s course selection. Students’ entire schedules—comprising of extracurricular activities, jobs, family responsibilities, and/or service commitments—must be considered, with all-around growth and well-being as first priority. Though we of course encourage students to seek challenges, we also educate students to recognize that well-rounded balance and a sustainable schedule lead to long-term success.

Grading and Class Rank

Given our selective admissions process and highly rigorous curriculum, Jesuit High School does not rank students, nor is a GPA distribution provided. At graduation each year, a valedictorian and salutatorian are recognized for the sole purpose of honoring academic achievement.

Each transcript provides a cumulative weighted GPA. Our weighted GPA calculation adds 0.5 to each Honors course, and adds 1.0 to each AP course. Final grades are in the form of a full letter grade, with no +/- added.

Grades are awarded using a conservative grading system.
