Dear Friends of Mercy,

Over the years, you, our cherished community of alumnae, parents and friends, have changed the of many young Mercy girls. In turn, these women are now changing the world each day as mothers, professionals and persons of faith because of their Mercy education. Your legacy and the legacy of Mercy continues as we see more and more families with three generations of Mercy!

In this issue of Mosaic, you’ll find the 2015-16 Annual Report which lists our honor roll of dedicated donors. As Mercy’s President and a 1966 alumna, I want to extend my sincere gratitude for your generosity. Your gift helps us in our mission. As you may know, tuition assistance allows us to support students whose families cannot pay the complete expense of tuition. Additionally, the cost of a Mercy education is a major financial commitment for all parents, and even when parents pay in full, it is still necessary to subsidize with fundraising. I thank you on behalf of everyone here – our students, teachers, and staff.

Mercy is proud to be the largest all-female Catholic high school in Michigan with over 720 students. This allows us to offer excellent academics, robust extracurricular programs and spiritual retreats. Our recent Class of 2016 graduates accomplished some amazing feats:

• $23 million in college scholarships • 27,000+ hours of community service • 3 National Scholastic Art Finalists • 11 college bound athletes

Our Robotics Team competed at the World Competition; Ice Hockey and Softball captured State Championships; and 16 students committed to be Youth Mercy Associates. The world needs Mercy graduates today more than ever; we are building compassionate, well-spoken and confident future leaders.

May God bless you in this 2016 Jubilee Year of Mercy for your commitment to Mercy High School and making a Mercy education a reality for so many young women.

In Mercy,

Cheryl Delaney Kreger, Ed.D. '66 President

3 MERCY is Family!

On October 12, 2016, the Alumnae Board hosted the annual Legacy Dinner to honor the tradition of a Mercy education. We welcomed 50 Mercy students, along with their alumna-mothers, to this special dinner. We were additionally blessed to have six alumna-grandmothers join us.

Guest speakers Kathy McGarry Chezick ’81 and daughter Rochelle Chezick ’17 talked about their respective Mercy experiences - the differences, the similarities, and the Mercy pride that has endured through the years. Missy Swiacki Ewald ’85 and daughter Morgan Ewald ’17 led the sentimental pinning ceremony, and Stephanie Acho Tartoni ’90 and daughter Annie Acho Tartoni ’18 were the lucky winners of the $1,000 tuition drawing.

8 Hats off to The Class of 1981!

The Class of 1981 celebrated their 35-year reunion at Mercy, at Champps, and at the home of Colleen McMaster Rozman ’81, Associate Principal, Academic Affairs. The celebration just kept going!

“This truly was a great day for reminiscing and appreciating our school, even more so than we did as students. I was fortunate to have a mom who wanted to give me a different experience and give me the chances she didn't have. The Mercy Mimes were awesome and the whole experience was fantastic. I will forever be a Mercy Girl!” - Karen Jefferson Ferguson '81

Abundant thanks to Emily Day Gibson for being the long-standing Class of 1981 representative. Emily shares classmate updates and Mercy news, and is key to the bond that exists among this tight-knit class. What a gift to the Mercy community! “Sistas” for Sisters The Class of 1981 affectionately refers to themselves as “Mercy Sistas,” so it makes perfect sense that they would come together in support of the Religious Sisters of Mercy. As the end of 2016 approaches, the class is making plans to host their second annual Christmas party for the retired Sisters.

Chrissie Moylan Skynar ’81 explains, “After Mercy’s 70th Anniversary Celebration, I was telling Tooter Moll ’81 how my family would ‘bring Christmas’ to my great aunts in Monroe, Michigan each year. My great aunts were IHM nuns. Then Tooter said, ‘We need to do that for our nuns.’ So that is how it began.”

Chrissie posted to the class Facebook page and sent emails to spread the news of the party and the reason behind it—to show the retired Sisters gratitude and respect. The party came complete with a fancy meal and presents. Chrissie says, “I asked our class to sign up to help, and packages were coming in from all over the country. Many ’81 Sistas wanted to come and help out on the day of the soiree….and join in the fun!”

On Sunday, November 29, 2015, Tammy Forfinski Morris ’81 came early to Chrissie’s home to pitch in with the cooking. Eleven Sisters of Mercy joined the Class of 1981 for wine and punch, beef tenderloin, sesame ginger chicken, roasted potatoes, mostaccioli, salads, and a chocolate layer cake.

The class gave each Sister a large swag bag filled with gift cards to Target and Kohl’s, cozy blankets and socks, Arbonne hand cream, homemade English toffee, full toiletry bag, and tote bag. “They were so appreciative, and some mentioned no one had ever done anything like this before for them,” said Chrissie.

Chrissie encourages other alumnae to reach out to the Sisters. “Take the time to get in touch with them! They would love to hear from you!” Mercy’s Alumnae Office can help connect you with Sisters of Mercy.

Thank you, Class of 1981!

The athletics landscape is constantly evolving as we strive to provide the best possible experience for our student- athletes. Meanwhile, the cost of salaries, team travel and maintenance expenses are escalating.

The long-term solution to keeping pace with these expenses is an endowment. An endowment fund for Mercy High School athletics has recently been established. Each gift to the endowment fund is invested and earns income in perpetuity for the operating budget of the athletic program.

Contact Jennifer Stark or Maureen Stirling Weiss ’96 in the Mercy Advancement Office at 248-893-3538 or email [email protected] for questions about the athletics projects or to purchase a bench. GO MARLINS!
