Chealey To Miss 2015-16 Season With Injury

ANDREW MILLER The Post & Courier - October 21, 2015

It was a routine basketball pivot that College of Charleston guard Joe Chealey has made a million times on the court.

But this time when the Orlando, Fla., native planted his foot and make the cut, he felt his ankle and foot give way. Chealey crumpled to the floor, knowing almost immediately that this wasn't an injury he'd be able to walk away from anytime soon.

Chealey, the Cougars' second-leading scorer from a year ago, will miss the entire 2015-16 season after suffering a broken ankle/foot in practice earlier in the week, the school announced on Wednesday.

"I kind of knew when it happened that it was going to be bad," Chealey said Wednesday during the team's annual photo shoot. “I felt something pop, so I kind of knew right when it happened that it was going to be a while before I’d play again.”

Chealey was one of the team’s top returning players, averaging 12.4 points per game last season and leading the Cougars with 109 assists. He was also among the top assists leaders (3.3 apg) in the Colonial Athletic Association and had a 1.38 assist-to-turnover ratio.

“I feel so bad for Joe because he worked so hard over the summer on his game to get better,” said College of Charleston coach Earl Grant. “He’s one of the leaders of this team and he’s such a great competitor. Joe’s obviously disappointed, his teammates are disappointed and the coaching staff is disappointed. We’ve got to put our collective arms around Joe and help him through this.”

Chealey, who has played in 60 games with 42 career starts over the last two seasons, will receive a medical redshirt year and will have two more years of eligibility remaining.

“Not being out there with the guys is the toughest thing,” Chealey said. “Not going to war with your teammates is the toughest part of any injury. I’m going to try and lead the guys in any way I can. I’m going to watch film and I’ll be around to talk with them after practices and games. I want to get into coaching someday so this will give me a little bit of a head start on that.”

Filling Chealey’s shoes won’t be easy. The Cougars signed three guards in their latest recruiting class — Grant Riller, Payton Hulsey and Marquise Pointer. Sophomore Cameron Johnson was used at the point guard spot during small spurts last season. Hulsey, a junior, played point guard during his freshman season at Western Kentucky and is the most likely candidate to replace Chealey in the Cougars backcourt. Riller will be used at the point guard and spots, while Pointer is the only exclusive lead guard in the class.

“We signed two players specifically for that position in Marquise and Payton,” Grant said. “Payton is a jack of all trades, but he’s played the position before. Marquise has that point guard mentality, but he doesn’t have any experience. Grant is kind of a combo guard that can play both guard positions. We are certainly going to need all three of them to get through this.”

A business administration major, Chealey had a career-best 12-game double-figure scoring streak going towards the end of last season — a stretch where he averaged 14.3 points per game through the CAA tournament quarterfinals. He also shot a team-best 75.8 percent from the free throw line, which was the 11th-best percentage in the CAA. He had a career-high 30 points at Charlotte — the most points scored in a single game since former Cougars standout and Olympian Andrew Lawrence in 2012.

“It’s better to have an injury like this happen before the season rather than in the middle of it,” Grant said. “Two weeks ago I was wondering how I was going to play them all and now I’ve got a better idea of how I’m going to do it. The minutes are going to be tight because we’ve still got five or six guards playing three positions.”

COUGARS BUILDING CHAMPIONSHIP RELATIONSHIPS IN LIFE

COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON ATHLETICS COMMUNICATIONS CofCSports.com - October 17, 2015

Renowned sports psychologist Dr. Joe Carr has worked with the likes of NBA superstars LeBron James and , and now, College of Charleston Basketball.

His impressive resume speaks volumes having worked with more than 40 college teams including 2014 national champion Connecticut, which was featured in an article leading up to the Huskies’ championship run in and Notre Dame Basketball featured in March of 2015 in Forbes Magazine.

A former college basketball player himself, Carr gravitated towards working with Charleston after a client of his at another mid-major school put him in touch with head coach Earl Grant.

Having previously developed the NBA’s rookie transition program with the help of Oscar Robertson, Carr has become a fixture in college basketball circles aiding in team chemistry, and most importantly as he says, “building championship relationships for life.”

“What makes a good fit for a player and a team and what doesn’t?” Carr said. “That’s how I first came up with my concept and idea of building team chemistry. After years and years of working with the NBA’s rookie transition program, it has morphed into working with college and pro teams focusing purely on how to get people to sacrifice and come together.”

Carr emphasizes team chemistry with four tenets and the acronym: R.A.R.E. – Relationships, Accepting Challenges, Recovery From Mistakes and Execute Coach’s Directions.

“It allows them to build relationships in a close way,” he said. “It not only allows them to call each other out, but allows them to recover quickly from mistakes, to execute coach’s directions and have that blind trust.”

The Cougars spent an entire week meeting with Carr in team chemistry-building sessions. Grant and his coaching staff met first over the course of three consecutive days, while the players met with Carr for the next three days that culminated in a combined session with both groups on Friday night at TD Arena.

“Dr. Carr was as good as they advertised him to be,” Grant said. “It was really important and beneficial for our staff and players this week. We found out about each other’s personal lives. Our players were really able to open up with each other sharing different life experiences that they had gone through. From a team bonding and chemistry standpoint, we were able to get closer.”

His success stories other than UConn? Carr compares College of Charleston to working with Notre Dame where the Fighting Irish went 15-17 in 2013-14 and ended up winning the ACC and was one shot away from advancing to the Final Four last year. He says Charleston mirrors Notre Dame in a way that both programs have been out of the fray for some time and off people’s radar.

However, he sees the potential for Charleston to do something just as successful and meaningful soon. It begins with leadership and building on relationships that become long term and for life. “We not only want them to become an elite team and elite teammates, but elite in everything they do,” he said.

“In my observations this week, Coach Grant truly cares about the ‘total person.’” Carr said. “He has taken on the responsibility of helping these kids, not only on the basketball court, but to manage the trauma they have gone through. It’s an attitude of, ‘I’m going to help them manage everything they have gone through and show them that the light is ahead to be able to take that next step.’ He certainly has brought that fire and desire to help them succeed.”

Carr compares the trauma the team had endured to the magnitude of an earthquake or tsunami. But, that’s not to say it can’t be overcome with the support of people like Carr and Grant on board.

“This was something I wanted to take on based on what I knew had happened last year,” Carr said. “Ordinarily, I would go work with pro teams during the fall, but this seemed like the right thing to do. It wasn’t about money. It was about being in the right place and right time. After talking to Coach Grant on the phone, I had the feeling there was a hunger and thirst to help these guys heal and build character.”

This won’t be the last time the Cougars will see Carr. He plans to come back to the Lowcountry three-or-four more times for tune-up sessions during the upcoming season.

“I had my doubts going into these sessions and didn’t know what to expect,” College of Charleston junior point guard and team co-captain Joe Chealey said. “But, Dr. Carr was unbelievable. It really brought us closer together, and at this time of the year, it’s important to get to that level of commitment as a team. It helped us establish trust and comfort with each other going into the season. We will be better, because of it.”

COUGARS OPEN PRESEASON PRACTICE

ANDREW MILLER The Post & Courier - October 6, 2015

When College of Charleston coach Earl Grant surveyed the court Tuesday afternoon for the Cougars’ first preseason practice, he couldn’t help but smile.

There’s still a lot that needs to be done before the Cougars take the floor 38 days from now against South Carolina State, but at least this season Grant has had the luxury of having an offseason to work with his team.

A year ago, Grant was hired in the early September, replacing former coach Doug Wojcik, just two months before the Cougars first game of the season. Unlike other coaches who had a spring, summer and a couple of months in the fall to work with players, Grant had a little more than two months to install his systems and get to know his players.

“It’s been nice to have that spring, summer and fall with the guys,” Grant said. “Last year my biggest concern was getting to know the guys and earning their trust. We’ve built those relationships and that trust, so it’s been a different offseason. The guys know me, they know each other and I think that helps.”

Junior guards Canyon Barry and Joe Chealey agreed.

“We just have a higher comfort level with coach Grant and the rest of the coaching staff,” aid Barry, who led the Cougars in scoring, averaging 12.5 points a game. “We’ve been able to work through the systems and spend a little more time in the areas where we need to work on. It’s been a great offseason. I think we worked on a lot of different things and that are only going make us a better team.”

The Cougars had one of the worst seasons in program history a year ago. Their 24 losses were the most in program history and they finished just 3-15 in the Colonial Athletic Association.

“I think it taught us perseverance,” Barry said. “You never go into a season wanting to win nine games, that’s never the goal. I think we can use what happened last season as fuel for this season. I’m sure we’re going to be picked low in the CAA so that’s even more fuel. It’s a brand new team and the new pieces we have are fitting into the system really well.”

The Cougars have added five new faces — forwards James Bourne and Jarrell Brantley and guards Payton Hulsey, Marquise Pointer and Grant Riller. The added depth should make competition for playing time that much more intense over the next month.

“That’s the biggest change from last year to this year,” Chealey said. “They are extremely talented group of freshmen coming in and the competition will bring the best out of everyone.

“The next four weeks is most important time for us. We make each other better right now and make it harder in practice than in a game.”

The biggest objective for Grant this season is to build more toughness within the program, he said. The Cougars were outrebounded last season (35.8 to 32.2) and gave up 64.6 points a game.

“We need to create a level of toughness and tenacity, so people can’t push us around,” Grant said. “The biggest thing for us is that physicality and toughness. At the end of the day you can’t be a good program or a good team if you don’t defend and rebound. That’s always a constant for us. We need to make sure we have toughness, rebounding and tenacity on defense. That’s what we’re trying to build.”

With the added depth, Grant said he expects the Cougars to attack more at both ends of the floor.

“We need to not just run our systems, but execute it,” Grant said. “Anything that is run well has a greater chance to succeed. We’ve got to execute. The players have to be more focused, as coaching staff, we’ve got to coach better. We’ve got blue print in place, we just need to master the system.”

NEWCOMERS TO PROVIDE COUGARS WITH ADDED DEPTH

COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON ATHLETICS COMMUNICATIONS CofCSports.com - September 10, 2015

Recruiting is the lifeblood of any program.

Even with a late start last fall, College of Charleston Head Coach Earl Grant and his staff were able to assemble a strong 2014-15 signing class to address several of the program’s needs at different positions.

With the college basketball season less than a month away, and teams across the country set to take the hardwood again for the first official day of practice, the Cougars have enjoyed a productive off-season with summer workouts coupled in with time for individual on-court development and strength and conditioning.

This year’s roster includes five newcomers to the squad, two early-signees and three late-signees, who will add depth to the lineup after the graduation of Anthony Stitt (Charlotte, N.C.), Adjehi Baru (Abidjan, Ivory Coast), Pat Branin (Richmond, Va.) and David Wishon (Concord, N.C.).

“We are really excited about having more depth on our roster,” Grant said. “A very important ingredient in developing a good program is competition for position. Our players have really challenged each other this summer. It has been a pleasure to watch our competitive spirit grow over the last several months. I am really excited about getting our guys back in the gym this fall.”

Freshman 6-foot-3 guard Grant Riller (Ocoee, Fla.) and freshman six-foot guard Marquise Pointer (Jonesboro, Ark.) were the first two signees for Grant last fall.

Riller had been recruited by Grant for two years, while an assistant coach at Clemson. He gained national attention on the recruiting scene after playing well in a Philadelphia tournament in the summer of 2014 on the AAU Basketball circuit for Q6 All-Stars.

Averaging 29.1 points per game as a senior at Ocoee High School, Riller set a new school single-game scoring record dropping 53 points against Leesburg High School in the championship game of the Ocoee Great 8 Boys Basketball Tournament. He even beat out LSU McDonald’s All-American from Oak Ridge High School in Orlando, for player of the year honors for Orange and Osceola Counties by the Florida Athletic Coaches Association. That short list also included Virginia Tech freshman forward Kerry Blackshear, Jr.

“Grant is a really good scorer and is very athletic,” Grant said. “He is very aggressive shooting the ball from the perimeter and driving to the basket. Grant has great savvy with the ball and can create his own shot. He has great three-point range and plays above the rim when he attacks the paint.”

Pointer is the first-ever men’s basketball recruit for College of Charleston out of the state of Arkansas. He gained early exposure on the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League circuit and was tabbed a three-star recruit by Rivals.com. His high school, Jonesboro Senior, was ranked No. 28 nationally by USA TODAY in its national high school rankings.

During his junior season, Pointer was named all-state and all-conference leading the Hurricanes to the Class 6A state championship title and a 30-3 overall record in 2014. He was also rated the No. 35 point guard in the nation by ESPN Recruiting Nation and chose CofC over Wichita State with interest from Ole Miss. Off the court, he enjoys photography and drawing.

“Marquise is very unselfish, brings great toughness and is a really good defender and passer,” Grant said. “I expect him to provide us with more perimeter defense. He is another guy on our team that can get in the paint and create for himself or his teammates. He can also knock down open 3’s.”

The next two pieces of the recruiting puzzle came later in the spring when the Cougars inked freshman 6-foot-7 forward Jarrell Brantley (Columbia, S.C.) and junior transfer Payton Hulsey (Memphis, Tenn.), a 6-foot-5 guard from Eastern Florida State College.

Brantley’s commitment to CofC was just the beginning of a Palmetto State pipeline that Grant and his staff would like to continue in regards to recruiting and signing the best in-state talent. He was a journeyman of sorts playing his first two years at Ridge View High School in Columbia and then his last two years at Montrose Christian School in Rockville, Md. He participated in the 2014 D1 Nation Top 100 Camp.

Brantley opted to play one post-grad year at Notre Dame Preparatory School in Fitchburg, Mass. There, he helped the Crusaders advance to the National Prep Championships averaging 13 points and eight rebounds per game. Brantley was ranked as the No. 7 overall Class of 2015 prospect in the state of Massachusetts and No. 27 overall prospect in the New England area.

Now, back in Charleston, where he was born on June 7, 1996, Brantley is happy to be back home in the Palmetto State, especially with his family nearby to watch all of his games this season. His mother, Priscilla, graduated from Wando High School and is a Lowcountry native. 43 [ continued on next page ]

43 2015 16 CHARLESTON BASKETBALL SEASON CLIPPINGS

“Jarrell is a very unique talent, because of his combination of size and skill,” Grant said. “He has a really good basketball IQ and feel for the game. His ball handling skills and his passing will allow him to drive the ball and make some plays. He will also make his teammates better. Jarrell is very physical around the basket. He has good post moves and is a very good rebounder.”

Hulsey is another journeyman having first started off his collegiate career at Western Kentucky as a freshman in 2013-14 and later transferring to Eastern Florida State College in Brevard County, Fla. He played and started in all 33 games of the season as the Titans finished the season with a school-record tying 29 victories and were seeded No. 13 in the 2015 NJCAA Division I Men’s National Championship Tournament.

Growing up in Memphis, Hulsey attended Penny Hardaway camps as a child and continued to develop his game at Southwind High School. He helped the Jaguars to the 2013 Tennessee Class 3A state championship title and a 34-6 overall record as a senior. Like Pointer, his high school team was ranked as high as No. 9 and No. 15 in the national high school rankings throughout his prep career where he was named to the 2011-12 “Best of Preps” Class 3A Boys Team by the Memphis Commercial-Appeal as a junior. He originally signed with Lipscomb University, but decided to attend WKU instead.

“Payton does a lot of different things,” Grant said. “He is very good in the open court with the ball. He can also attack the rim, but also has great feel for finding his teammates. He is a physical rebounding guard and a great defender.”

The final late signee, 6-foot-8 graduate senior forward James Bourne (Alexandria, Va.), was a much-needed addition to the Cougars’ front court after the loss of four-year starter Adjehi Baru. Bourne previously played at Winthrop, where he graduated in May with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. He is currently pursuing his master’s degree coursework in public administration at CofC.

Bourne suffered a season-ending knee injury during his senior season with the Eagles, resulting in his fifth-year of eligibility remaining to join the Cougars. He played in a total of 92 career games with 51 starts averaging 4.5 points and 3.4 rebounds at Winthrop. Like Pointer, Bourne gained early exposure on the recruiting trail playing in the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League with a high-level AAU team out of Washington, D.C. He earned all-state honors averaging 19 points and nine rebounds as a junior at Bishop O’Connell High School in Arlington, Va.

“James is an experienced big guy that gives us more maturity in the paint,” Grant said. “He is very physical and does a great job of carving out space. James is very skilled for his size. He has a good mix to his game, because he can score in the paint as well as step out and shoot. He is very smart and is a great defender.”

The Cougars’ first official day of practice will be held on Monday, Oct. 5, as they prep for their lone exhibition tune-up against Southern Wesleyan on Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. (ET) at TD Arena.
