Ecoregions of New England Forested Land Cover, Nutrient-Poor Frigid and Cryic Soils (Mostly Spodosols), and Numerous High-Gradient Streams and Glacial Lakes
58. Northeastern Highlands The Northeastern Highlands ecoregion covers most of the northern and mountainous parts of New England as well as the Adirondacks in New York. It is a relatively sparsely populated region compared to adjacent regions, and is characterized by hills and mountains, a mostly Ecoregions of New England forested land cover, nutrient-poor frigid and cryic soils (mostly Spodosols), and numerous high-gradient streams and glacial lakes. Forest vegetation is somewhat transitional between the boreal regions to the north in Canada and the broadleaf deciduous forests to the south. Typical forest types include northern hardwoods (maple-beech-birch), northern hardwoods/spruce, and northeastern spruce-fir forests. Recreation, tourism, and forestry are primary land uses. Farm-to-forest conversion began in the 19th century and continues today. In spite of this trend, Ecoregions denote areas of general similarity in ecosystems and in the type, quality, and 5 level III ecoregions and 40 level IV ecoregions in the New England states and many Commission for Environmental Cooperation Working Group, 1997, Ecological regions of North America – toward a common perspective: Montreal, Commission for Environmental Cooperation, 71 p. alluvial valleys, glacial lake basins, and areas of limestone-derived soils are still farmed for dairy products, forage crops, apples, and potatoes. In addition to the timber industry, recreational homes and associated lodging and services sustain the forested regions economically, but quantity of environmental resources; they are designed to serve as a spatial framework for continue into ecologically similar parts of adjacent states or provinces. they also create development pressure that threatens to change the pastoral character of the region. -

/ Maine Geological Survey To Accompany Map GM-1. GEOLOGIC 11AP OF THE PORTLAND QUADRANGLE, !1aine by Arthur M. Hussey, II STRATIGRAPHY MERRIMACK GROUP. In Southwestern Maine the Merrimack Group consists of, in ascending stratigraphic order, the Kittery, Eliot, and Berwick Formations. The Formations are dominantly an assemblage of interbedded quartzo- f eldspathic schists or phyllites and calcareous metaquartzite and granu lite with minor metapelite and calcareous metapelite. In the Portland quadrangle the Group is represented by the Berwick and Windham Formations, the latter being a new stratigraphic name proposed here for the first time, and tentatively correlated with the Eliot Formation. These two formations crop out over much of the northwestern half of the quadrangle. Ben1ick Formation(DSb). The Berwick Formation has been mapped from the type locality in the Salmon Falls River in Berwick, Maine, northeast into the Portland Quadrangle. Katz (1917) proposed the name Berwick Gneiss for this formation, and because he felt these rocks were more metamorphosed than surrounding rocks, he regarded them to be of Precambrian age. Freedman (1950) renamed the unit the Berwick Formation because of variability of texture and structure of the rock and alternation of lithic types. He clearly pointed out the probable Paleozoic age of the unit. The principal part of the Formation (DSb) consists of thin-to medium bedded, occasionally massive, biotite quartzite and quartz-biotite schist containing variable amounts of plagioclase. Locally interbedded with these rock types is quartz-biotite-muscovite schist with very rare garnet and staurolite. Thin calc-silicate beds and pods up to 6" thick, containing hornblende, and occasionally diopside and grossularite, occur sporadically throughout the section, but only locally constitute more than 15% of the sequence. -

Scattergood ~'" and Clyde C. Taylor -~H;~ ' INTRODUCTION This is the second of three papers concerning the World War II efforts to develop a mussel fishery in the North Atlantic region. The first article dealt with the survey to discover whether supplies o! mussels were great enough to sup port a large fishery. The present paper is concerned with biolcgical and techno logical observations made during the mussel survey. SIZES OF MUSSELS Table 3 reveals some interesting characteristics of the size distribution of the mussels on the beds. An examination of the table shows that there are many localities in which there is no well defined and distinct mode indicative of the young from the summer's set. Only Pleasant River, Narraguagus ~ , . ' :' Ri ver, Winter Harbor, and Dux ~. bury Bay have such modes. The absence of distinct year-size groups is even more a pparent in the areas below low tide at Ingall's Island, Jim's Island, Moon Ledge, Skillings River, Sheep Island, Mackerel Cove, Maddaket Harbor, and off Brew ster. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration National Ocean Service NOAA's Estuarine Living Marine Resources Program The Strategic Environmental Assessments (SEA) Division of NOAA's Office of Ocean Resources Conservation and Assessment (ORCA) was created in response to the need for comprehensive information on the effects of human activities on the nation's coastal ocean. The SEA Division performs assessments of the estuarine and coastal environments and of the resources of the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). In June 1 985, NOAA began a program to develop a comprehensive information base on the life history, relative abundance and distribution of fishes and invertebrates in estuaries throughout the nation (Monaco 1986). The Estuarine Living Marine Resources (ELMR) program has been conducted jointly by the SEA Division, the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), and other agencies and institutions. The nationwide ELMR data base was completed in January 1 994, and includes data for 1 35 species found in 1 22 estuaries and coastal embayments. Eight reports and reprints are now available free upon request, and another is scheduled for completion in 1 994 (see below). This report, Distribution and Abundance of Fishes and Invertebrates in North Atlantic Estuaries, summarizes information on the distribution and abundance of 58 fish and invertebrate species in 1 7 North Atlantic estuaries. A national report summarizing the data and results from the program will be published in 1 995. -

Results from a number of sampling efforts prior to 2010 were also included where appropriate. -
