Position Description: Cancel Rent DC Coalition Coordinator One Year, Part Time

Overview: Cancel Rent DC is a growing coalition of 11 community organizations, representing thousands of District residents, united to prevent mass and displacement of long-time residents from the District, especially Black and Brown residents, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. As DC faces a looming crisis in hunger, , and eviction, many tenants are struggling to make ends meet. We believe no one in our city should be made homeless or face crippling debt as the result of a global health emergency. Cancel Rent DC is seeking a Coalition Coordinator for the Cancel Rent DC campaign. The Cancel Rent DC Coalition Coordinator will work closely with organizers from Coalition organizations, and will receive direction and guidance from seasoned organizers. For this position, Cancel Rent DC will give priority to candidates who either have the ability to speak Spanish or Amharic and/or have experience in policy or with housing insecurity in Washington, DC.

The position is available for 11 months, which will begin on the employee’s start date, with an expectation of 15 hours/week. The position may be extended based on funding ​ availability.

Job Responsibilities:

Campaign: Become familiar with the platform of the Cancel Rent DC campaign and able to teach the campaign platform to others. Coordinate and co-lead the Cancel Rent DC membership meetings, monthly community meetings, and working group meetings as necessary. Coordinate timely “rapid response” to urgent issues that arise unexpectedly (e.g. last minute press request).

Outreach and Organizing: Engage with the public about the Cancel Rent DC campaign. Work in conjunction with Coalition member organizations to build their mobilization capacity and support in growing the membership base. Follow up regularly with community members and create opportunities for residents to learn more about the campaign, join the membership of Coalition organizations, gain leadership opportunities, and advocate for themselves within the Cancel Rent DC platform.

Communications: Ensure regular communication of Cancel Rent DC activities to member groups, activists, and the general public. Manage social media accounts in collaboration with the Communications Committee.

Government Engagement and Accountability: Participate in meetings with DC Councilmembers. Take notes and report back updates to Cancel Rent DC coalition. Prepare community members to participate in Council meetings and hearings as needed. Play a lead coordinating role in direct actions intended to build power and accountability with targeted elected officials. Ensure leadership of impacted community members in all aspects of government engagement and accountability work.

Support and Accountability: Develop and review a weekly work plan in conjunction with representatives from the Cancel Rent DC coalition. Participate in Bi-weekly check-in meetings on progress of Cancel Rent DC Campaign.

Required Qualifications: ● Outstanding leadership skills and the ability to connect with and build effective teams of diverse partners across the community. ● A strong commitment to and understanding of social justice, popular education, and community organizing. ● Demonstrated interest in developing campaign strategy, managing campaigns, and/or coalition building. ● The ability to implement a campaign vision. ● A willingness to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends. ● The ability to track multiple tasks and see through to completion. ● Enthusiasm for building relationships across DC’s communities. ● Strong verbal and written communication skills. ● Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite, database management systems, Google Suite, and Wordpress

Strongly Preferred Qualifications: Bilingual in Spanish. Social media and comms experience. Familiarity with DC Government, agencies, and legislative process.

Term of employment:This is a part-time contract for 11 months. The Campaign Coordinator ​ will act as an independent contractor. Compensation:$20,000- $28/hour for 15 hours/week ​
