Reed Appalachian State University, Boone, USA Abstract The Emerging Church is one of the more interesting new movements in the religious landscape of the United States today. The Emerging Church has come out of US Evangelicalism, which has found itself in crisis, with a diminishing number of young people remaining in the church and a general popular impression of being intolerant, judgmental, and right-wing. Many in the Emerging Church are attempting to construct a vision of Christianity that addresses these problems. However, the Emerging Church is not a monolith; it includes a variety of perspectives and positions. What I will argue in this article is that there is, among several different perspectives within the movement, a critique of the US political and economic system that provides an interesting and new way of thinking about the relationship between Christianity, politics, economics, and identity that may serve to create a challenge to the hegemonic system of the United States. For the purposes of this article I use three examples to illustrate my point: Shane Claibourne’s ‘‘New Monasticism’’/’’Red Letter Christians’’ movement; Brian McLaren’s recent work, Why did Jesus, Moses, the Buddha and Mohammed Cross The Road; and Peter Rollins as a self-proclaimed inheritor of the radical tradition. -

Water Baptism is one of three ordinances that the church observes, put forth by our Lord Jesus Christ. It is our hope that your life in Christ will be one of continuous growth and prosperity. 3 John 1:2 “beloved I wish above all you prosper and be in health even as your soul prospers”. Those that desire water baptism, it is our aim to share some biblical truths that will set the course for the journey you have embarked upon with Christ. Water Baptism (1st Ordnance) Water Baptism is a vital part of the salvation experience, but a person is not saved through water baptism. Jesus commissioned the disciples to baptize new converts (Matthew 28:19 and Mark 16:16); therefore, water baptism is a sacred ordinance to be obeyed. In line with biblical authority, the only biblical mode of water baptism is by immersion, and we should practice this symbolic ordinance accordingly. Persons are baptized with the Trinitarian formula (in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost). “ Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:” Matthew 28:19 We do not practice infant baptism, since we do not feel that the child has willfully entered into sin, nor do we find scriptural basis for infant baptism. However, we do believe in and practice the dedication of infants to God. This practice is seen to be in keeping with Jesus' treatment of and statements about children (Mark 10: 14-16). The Lord's Supper and Foot Washing (2nd & 3rd Ordnance) The Church Of God In Christ accepts the Lord's Supper as a command of Christ to be obeyed. -

Ordinance or Sacrament: Both/And Rather Than Either/Or1 JOHN MARK HICKS I recognize that “sacramental theology” carries negative baggage for many people. I could avoid this language, but there are reasons to emphasize the sacramental character of baptism, the Lord’s Supper, and assembly. If sacrament means some kind of ritualistic power rooted in institutionalism or clerical authority, then I would not use the term. If sacrament has overtones of “magical powers” or “superstition,” then I would not use the term. If sacrament entails that faith is unnecessary or that the ritualistic act itself (in terms of its own power) imparts grace, then I would not use the term. Or if sacrament is understood to restrict God’s freedom, I would avoid the term. I do not use sacrament in any those senses. -

Forum on Public Policy Sociomaterial Movement Learning in Evangelical Student Activism: A Case Study in Environmental Education Sherrie Steiner, Assistant Professor, Sociology Department, Indiana University – Purdue University, Fort Wayne Abstract What began as a professor’s classroom illustration to encourage students to take climate change seriously sparked a student movement that transformed Eastern University into a leader in environmental stewardship and social responsibility. How did this happen at an evangelical university in a conservative coal state that, at the time, was producing 1% of the world’s climate change gases? Using the method of autoethnography, the author provides an explanation that involves political opportunity structures (recent legal changes now allowed consumers to purchase clean energy from the electrical grid), the influence of ideas (the professor had published a theory about the transformative influence of environmental education—students challenged her to operationalize the theories), intentional strategizing (by students who implemented best practices from other universities), student government (who conducted meetings across campus before holding a senate vote) and political struggle between university administrators and students that was only resolved after the student body president obtained media coverage by The Philadelphia Inquirer. What really lit a fire under the student body, however, went beyond theory frames, politics, legal changes, social movement strategies, student government or individual charisma. Some might call it serendipity. By 2003, 37% of Eastern University’s electricity came from wind energy. Within two years, Eastern University had 100% of the electricity for the main campus generated by wind energy. In 2004, they added a 56 kilowatt solar system to the roof of the Eagle Learning Center. -

New “Monasticism” and the Vocabulary of Religious Life “The letter of the Rule was killing, and the large number of applicants and the high rate of their subsequent leaving shows the dichotomy: men were attracted by what Merton saw in monasticism and what he wrote about it, and turned away by the life as it was dictated by the abbot.” (Edward Rice, The Man in the Sycamore Tree: The good times and hard life of Thomas Merton, p. 77) “Fourth, the new monasticism will be undergirded by deep theological reflection and commitment. by saying that the new monasticism must be undergirded by theological commitment and reflection, I am not saying that right theology will of itself produce a faithful church. A faithful church is marked by the faithful carrying out of the mission given to the church by Jesus Christ, but that mission can be identified only by faithful theology. So, in the new monasticism we must strive simultaneously for a recovery of right belief and right practice.” (Jonathan R. Wilson, Living Faithfully in a Fragmented World: Lessons for the Church from MacIntyre’s After Virtue [1997], pp. 75-76 in a chapter titled “The New Monasticism”) Whether we like the term or not, it is here, probably to stay. “Monasticism.” Is that what it is, new “monasticism”? Is that what we should call it? The problem begins when you try to choose a textbook that covers the history of things. Histories of monasticism only cover the enclosed life. Celtic monasticism prior to Roman adoption is seldom covered. -
