Gen. Gary D. Speer, U.S. Army Europe Deputy Commanding General, a native of Gadsden, Ala., was presented the Distinguished Service Medal by Gen. Carter F. Ham, USAREUR's commanding general, during a military tattoo and retreat ceremony in Speer’s honor at Campbell Barracks here Thursday. Speer was honored for his 37-year Army career, which began when he was commissioned in 1972 as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Infantry upon graduation from the United States Military Academy, commonly known as West Point. Speer has been USAREUR's second-in-command since April 2006. He was presented a Certificate of Retirement from the Armed Forces of the United States of America, and a Certificate of Appreciation from the President of the United States, for his honorable service to the country. Speer also received an American flag that was flown in his honor over 14 military installations in Germany, Italy, Romania, and Kosovo. Mrs. Catherine M. Speer was presented the Distinguished Civilian Service Medal for her exceptional service as a volunteer in numerous capacities for the Soldiers, civilian employees and Family members of the United States Army, other United States military services and NATO. Mrs. Speer was also presented a Department of the Army Certificate of Appreciation for her support to her husband during his military career. -30- The U.S. Army in Europe trains for, conducts, and supports training and contingency operations with NATO and other coalition partners across its 51-country area of responsibility. The U.S. Army in Europe is headquartered in Heidelberg, Germany, is also stationed in Belgium, Italy, and the Netherlands, and is currently training in Bulgaria and Romania. U.S. Army units based in Europe are serving in Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. .

Four tattoo artists and eleven tattooed individuals were recruited and interviewed about the nature of the tattoo experience in order to determine the nature of the experience and its meaning to the participants. The participants were also interviewed about their knowledge of the social consequences involved with getting tattooed, and whether or not tattooing has become socially acceptable. Two tattoo artists did not complete the structured interviews, but each participated in an unstructured interview. Lastly, twelve participants were asked to free-list, sort, and scale their free-list of recreational activities on several attributes of leisure. The data from these instruments affirmed that the idea of leisure is subjective among the participants.

The band will send sparks flying with their dynamic, precision drumming showcase which received global recognition following their first performance at the Edinburgh Tattoo in 2003. Featuring exquisitely timed drills, their Sydney performance will comprise of an arrangement called ‘The White Cross and the Southern Cross’. Top Secret Drum Corps was borne by seven young drummers in 1991. They wanted to preserve Basel’s rich drumming heritage and began mixing the traditional style of drumming with other drum times and striking visual effects. To date, they’ve played at five Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo shows. The groups will form part of the cast of more than 1,500 international performers from countries including the UK, Papua New Guinea and France, for the biggest-ever cast line up in the Tattoo’s 69-year history. Under the theme ‘At All Points of the Compass’, the show will take guests on a tour of the world, guiding them around 360 degrees of the atlas to tell the compelling tale of Australia’s place in history and its links with allies and friends, including Switzerland. To celebrate this theme, the Australian show will take the audience on a circular tour around an imaginary compass rose with its centre at the dusty red heart of the continent - at Lambert Centre.
