You have often heard me refer to our supporters as our “Partners in Preservation.” Never have we felt this more strongly than this year, as we navigated our way, together, through an extraordinary time. Before I share details of ALT’s recent accomplishments, I must thank you most sincerely for your unwavering support of our mission, our staff, and ultimately, our island home during this challenging period. Although we haven’t seen you in person for many months, we feel connected to each other and to you, thanks to your calls, emails, cards, and generous support. Even in difficult circumstances, our partnership protects Aquidneck Island’s land and water resources, local agriculture, and wildlife habitat. On behalf of the board and my staff, we thank you!

I am thrilled to report that since March, over 42,000 visitors have enjoyed our public trails. There is a new appreciation for accessible, outdoor places. The 12 miles of trail we maintain have drawn many new walkers, runners, birders, horseback riders, picnic goers, and more. Our 2020 fiscal year saw the launch of two land campaigns: a 7.5-acre section of Glen Farm in Portsmouth and a 5.5-acre section of Sweet Berry Farm in Middletown. We received DEM approval for a new boardwalk at Little Creek Preserve and submitted a successful grant for a new public pavilion at Spruce Acres Farm. Our volunteers and staff resurfaced 1,400 feet of trail and installed 600 feet of new bog bridges. We submitted our reaccreditation application with the Land Trust Accreditation Commission, which was approved this fall. At the end of 2020, two Newport properties were conserved after the landowners generously donated easements to ALT, adding 13.62 acres to our protected lands. Our successes are a direct result of your support of our mission.

At our annual meeting on February 4, we welcomed two new board members, Ellen Bowman and Dr. Martha McConnell, and honored departing board member Karen Menezes. We thank all of our trustees and advisors for their expertise and guidance, and appreciate the time they dedicate to helping us run our small but mighty organization.

Thank you for your continued support – in so many ways! – for our shared goal of further protecting this beautiful island that we call home. We wish you and yours a very happy and healthy 2021. See you on the trail,

Charles B. Allott, Esq. Jonathan Gewirz Executive Director Board Chair

OCTOBER 2019 • Stewardship Director Alex Chuman attended Rally, the annual national land conservation conference, held in North Carolina. • Forty friends of the Land Trust joined ALT staff to volunteer at the Newport Marathon. The race sponsor, Gray Matter Marketing, rewarded our efforts with a generous donation. • We held a ceremony to officially open the trailside park at Little Creek Preserve. The park is adjacent to the Sakonnet Greenway Trail and offers a picnic table and benches. • ALT began the year-long process of reaccreditation by the Land Trust Accreditation Commission. In November 2020, our application was approved, giving ALT accreditation until The new walking trail at Little Creek Preserve on Bramans Lane opened in November 2025. October 2019.

NOVEMBER 2019 • Our stewardship team completed the last of over 90 conservation easement site visits for 2019, fulfilling our perpetual obligation to monitor our conservation easements and fee lands. • Nearly 300 supporters participated in our annual 5K Race for Open Space. The route includes sections of the Sakonnet Greenway Trail, conserved and maintained by ALT. • A large Christmas tree from Spruce Acres Farm was donated to Bowen’s Wharf, where it was decorated and installed for all to enjoy.

ALT’s Spruce Acres property supplied a Christmas tree to Bowen’s Wharf to DECEMBER 2019 decorate the public space there. • ALT staff used an interactive watershed model to educate 200 4 Thompson Middle School students on watershed conservation. • ALT completed the Aquidneck Island Development Impact Analysis with consultant Sasaki Associates. The analysis projected two visions for the island over the next 30 years: One where development trends continue and a second where more land is protected and smart growth planning implemented. If current trends continue, all of the remaining developable open space on the island will either be saved or built by 2050. • ALT received a grant from The William H. Donner Foundation to support a unit on climate change for high school science classes. Rogers High School and Portsmouth High School participated. The program included a lecture on climate change

JUNE 2020 • The Spruce Acres Farm Community Garden continued to thrive in its second season, with its nine raised garden beds fully planted by enthusiastic gardeners. • ALT staff and volunteers re-surfaced over 1,400 feet of hiking trail at Spruce Acres, the Sakonnet Greenway Trail, and Oakland Forest to help improve drainage and wet conditions The nine garden plots at Spruce Acres on the trailbed. were fully planted.

JULY 2020 • The Land Trust announced a campaign to conserve a new section of Sweet Berry Farm in Middletown. The 5.49-acre parcel abuts land that the farm has already conserved, and will be used to grow strawberries and pumpkins. • ALT created a fundraising event to replace its annual summer party, Fiesta Verde. The new event, Evening at Home, offered supporters an ‘evening to go’ in the form of a three- course dinner, local wine, local flowers, and a CD of musical selections. Participants picked up their packages at the ALT offices over the course of two evenings, bringing them home to enjoy with family or small groups. We are very grateful to those who helped plan this event and who donated to it, and to McGrath Clambakes and Catering, Newport Vineyards, Green- vale Vineyards, Garman Farm, and Lois Vaughan Jazz. ALT supporters enjoyed “Evening at Home,” a summer fundraiser offering dinner to go for families and small groups. 6 AUGUST 2020 • Executive Director Chuck Allott and Communications Manager Gretchen Markert presented a Zoom talk to the Newport chapter of AARP. 9 Creative Support for ALT!

ALT volunteer and supporter Audrey Royer used her creative talents to turn wood from a fallen willow tree into delightful holiday snowmen. She then sold the decorations and donated the proceeds to ALT, ultimately giving $650 to support our land conservation efforts. Thank you, Audrey!

Anyone Can Be a Citizen Scientist! This winter, ALT is embarking on an exciting new citizen science project: recording all the species that live and grow alongside our public trails. This project is hosted on iNaturalist, an online platform for sharing observations of the natural world. Visitors to Spruce Acres Farm, Little Creek Preserve, Oakland Forest and Meadow Preserve, and the Sakonnet Greenway Trail can make research-quality species observations simply by taking a picture of a plant, animal, or fungus and posting it to the iNaturalist app on their smartphones. Pooled together, these observations will give ALT a better sense of our properties’ biodiversity, which will help us to make better and more informed property management decisions moving forward. We’re also excited about this project’s potential to increase trail users’ knowledge of local ecology and engage volunteers in remote work. More information about the project is available on the volunteering page of our website (https://ailt.org/ways-to-give/volunteer/). - Anita Pilar Montero

10 Evening at Home: Save the Dates!

Summer is coming and we hope you will save the date for our next “Evening at Home” event! We provide the delicious three-course meals, wine, flowers, and more…you provide the venue for your own special evening with family and friends. Look for registration information soon and select either Wednesday, July 14, or Thursday, July 15, as your “Evening at Home.” Thank you to the many supporters who purchased tickets last year!

Sweet Berry Farm Update

The outpouring of support to conserve a new section of Sweet Berry Farm has been tremendous – thank you! We are very close to completing the campaign; at this writing, we have raised $252,000 of the $268,860 needed to permanently protect the parcel, which will be used by the farm to grow strawberries and pumpkins. The property is USDA prime farmland and has been farmed continuously since 1939. It is within the Maidford River/ Paradise Brook drinking supply watershed, so its conservation will help protect our drinking supply. It is home to many bird species and, once conserved, will add a vital link in the Sakonnet Greenway habitat corridor of 1,260 acres. Donations of any size may be made on our website (www.ailt.org); thank you for your contribution!

15 Two Newport Properties Conserved in 2020

Two generous landowners donated conservation easements to ALT at the end of last year, permanently protecting another 13.62 acres of land on Aquidneck Island. Mary Cushing Coleman donated 9.85 acres and EC Properties LLC donated 3.77 acres. Both properties are private, but their conservation assures that they will remain as open space forever. The Cushing Coleman property, located on Ocean Drive, includes the landmark geological formation known as Spouting Rock, which still explodes in high surf. It has 3,000 feet of rocky shoreline, natural vegetation, and lawn areas, jutting into the Atlantic Ocean between Bailey’s Beach and Gooseberry Beach. The property’s natural features, elevation, and topography provide unique scenic views from the east (Cliff Walk, Bailey’s/Reject’s Beach, and Ocean Avenue), the south (the public waters of Rhode Island Sound), and the west (Gooseberry Island, Ocean Avenue, Gooseberry/Hazard’s Beach, and Gooseberry Cove). In addition to the cultural and historic values that its setting provides, it offers other conservations values such as wildlife habitat and water resource protection. The EC Properties LLC parcel, located on Ledge Road, has 200 feet of coastline and is visible from the publicly-accessible Cliff Walk trail. The site offers scenic views from Ocean Avenue, Bailey’s Beach, and Reject’s Beach, and to boaters and sailors passing by on the ocean. The site has typical Newport rock out-croppings, a scenic feature of the Newport Neck area, and a number of tidal pools. Both properties are located within the center of the Newport Neck Greenway, which includes over 400 acres of land protected by either conservation easement or deed restriction. The conservation of these properties will help increase contiguity of the habitat and viewshed corridor in the Newport Neck Greenway. ALT is very grateful to Mary Cushing Coleman and to EC Properties LLC for their generosity and their commitment to conservation.
