GERRY MULLIGAN DISCOGRAPHY GERRY MULLIGAN RECORDINGS, CONCERTS AND WHEREABOUTS by Gérard Dugelay, France and Kenneth Hallqvist, Sweden January 2011 Gerry Mulligan DISCOGRAPHY - Recordings, Concerts and Whereabouts by Gérard Dugelay & Kenneth Hallqvist - page No. 1 PREFACE BY GERARD DUGELAY I fell in love when I was younger I was a young jazz fan, when I discovered the music of Gerry Mulligan through a birthday gift from my father. This album was “Gerry Mulligan & Astor Piazzolla”. But it was through “Song for Strayhorn” (Carnegie Hall concert CTI album) I fell in love with the music of Gerry Mulligan. My impressions were: “How great this man is to be able to compose so nicely!, to improvise so marvellously! and to give us such feelings!” Step by step my interest for the music increased I bought regularly his albums and I became crazy from the Concert Jazz Band LPs. Then I appreciated the pianoless Quartets with Bob Brookmeyer (The Pleyel Concerts, which are easily available in France) and with Chet Baker. Just married with Danielle, I spent some days of our honey moon at Antwerp (Belgium) and I had the chance to see the Gerry Mulligan Orchestra in concert. After the concert my wife said: “During some songs I had lost you, you were with the music of Gerry Mulligan!!!” During these 30 years of travel in the music of Jeru, I bought many bootleg albums. One was very important, because it gave me a new direction in my passion: the discographical part. This was the album “Gerry Mulligan – Vol. 2, Live in Stockholm, May 1957”.

NIMS JAZZ WALK OF FAME, AND GET THE BEST VIEW OF NEW ORLEANS’ SKYLINE COPYRIGHT © 2016, KEVIN HERRIDGE www.risingsunbnb.com Jazz musicians of the 1920s referred to Algiers as “over da river” or the “Brooklyn of the South,” the latter for its proximity to New Orleans as compared to New York and Brooklyn, both separated by a river. This tour concentrates on the Algiers Point neighborhood, that has a long, rich history of African American, French, Spanish, German, Irish, and Italian/Sicilian residents. Algiers, the second oldest neighborhood in New Orleans after the French Quarter, was the site of the slave holding areas, newly arrived from Africa, the powder magazine, and slaughterhouse of the early 18th century. John McDONOGH, the richest man, and largest landowner in New Orleans, lived here. Algiers was famous countrywide in the African American communities for its “Voodoo” and “Hoodoo” practitioners, and is celebrated in songs on this subject. The earliest bands containing Algiers’ musicians included the Pickwick Brass Band (1873-1900s), the Excelsior Brass Band (1880-1928), Jim DORSEY’s Band (1880s), Prof. MANETTA’s String Band (1880s), BROWN’s Brass Band of McDonoghville (1880s), and Prof. A. L. TIO’s String Band (aka the Big Four) (1880s), the Pacific Brass Band (1900-1912), and Henry ALLEN’s Brass Band (1907-1940s).

C The Society for American Music 2016 doi:10.1017/S1752196316000201 The Ambassadorial LPs of Dizzy Gillespie: World Statesman and Dizzy in Greece DARREN MUELLER Abstract In 1956, trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie became the first jazz musician to participate in the State Department’s Cultural Presentations program, a highly public aspect of U.S. Government’s Cold War propaganda efforts abroad. Seeking to capitalize on this historic moment, Gillespie’s record company issued two LPs featuring his ambassadorial ensemble: World Statesman (1956) and Dizzy in Greece (1957). To date, scholarship about the tours highlights how Gillespie skillfully navigated the shifting political landscape both on and off the bandstand. The role that commercial record making played in the renegotiation of African Americans’ social position during this era, however, remains undertheorized. This article reveals how, despite the albums’ claims of representation from abroad, the LPs contain only a small portion of Gillespie’s tour repertoire. I argue that these LPs were never meant to document the tours with veracity; rather, they were products of a political and technological moment when Gillespie’s record label could leverage musical diplomacy to circulate an elevated vision for jazz within the country’s cultural hierarchy. In 1956, Dizzy Gillespie became the first jazz musician

  • A Close Comparison of Queen Live at the Rainbow ’74 (2014) and Previously Available Versions
A close comparison of Queen Live at the Rainbow ’74 (2014) and previously available versions. Thomas Christie Intro In this study, I’m comparing the unofficially available versions of the Rainbow concerts with the 2014 release. Old sources: - March concert – Pittrek’s three source merge bootleg - November concerts – Audio rip from the 1992 ‘Box of Trix’ VHS - November 19th concert – The three song bootleg (Son and Daughter, Stone Cold Crazy and Liar) - Now I’m Here, November, as appears on the 2002 DVD ‘Greatest Video Hits’ New source: - The 2014 release I won’t be comparing the differing use of camera angles and editing in the video – this is solely an examination of the audio, with particular focus on the vocals, wherein most of the discrepancies lie. However, if the video is pertinent in understanding the origin on the vocal, then I will refer to it. I will provide a brief summary at the beginning of each song’s entry, followed by closer analysis. I must be clear that this isn’t intended to prove any point, rather just to provide specific information on the differences between the available versions of these shows, and hopefully bring us closer to understanding what parts are true to the way the shows actually sounded, which parts are clearly 1974 studio overdubs or 2014 alterations. In the case of the November shows, there is also the question of which parts of the audio belong to which night, which is overall very difficult to ascertain when there’s so few reference points which are confirmed to belong to a single night.

  • The Symbolic Rape of Representation: a Rhetorical Analysis of Black Musical Expression on Billboard's Hot 100 Charts
THE SYMBOLIC RAPE OF REPRESENTATION: A RHETORICAL ANALYSIS OF BLACK MUSICAL EXPRESSION ON BILLBOARD'S HOT 100 CHARTS Richard Sheldon Koonce A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY December 2006 Committee: John Makay, Advisor William Coggin Graduate Faculty Representative Lynda Dee Dixon Radhika Gajjala ii ABSTRACT John J. Makay, Advisor The purpose of this study is to use rhetorical criticism as a means of examining how Blacks are depicted in the lyrics of popular songs, particularly hip-hop music. This study provides a rhetorical analysis of 40 popular songs on Billboard’s Hot 100 Singles Charts from 1999 to 2006. The songs were selected from the Billboard charts, which were accessible to me as a paid subscriber of Napster. The rhetorical analysis of these songs will be bolstered through the use of Black feminist/critical theories. This study will extend previous research regarding the rhetoric of song. It also will identify some of the shared themes in music produced by Blacks, particularly the genre commonly referred to as hip-hop music. This analysis builds upon the idea that the majority of hip-hop music produced and performed by Black recording artists reinforces racial stereotypes, and thus, hegemony. The study supports the concept of which bell hooks (1981) frequently refers to as white supremacist capitalist patriarchy and what Hill-Collins (2000) refers to as the hegemonic domain. The analysis also provides a framework for analyzing the themes of popular songs across genres. The genres ultimately are viewed through the gaze of race and gender because Black male recording artists perform the majority of hip-hop songs.
