Introduction to LaTeX Installation Distribution and LaTeX Editor

Before we can start to dive into LaTeX and creating some fancy documents, we need to get LaTeX installed. You will need to install two pieces: Step 1 The LaTeX distribution which is basically all the LaTeX functions and packages. When you install ALL the packages, this can get huge (several GB). Hence, there are usually basic installations and full installations available. Step 2 The LaTeX editor which is a graphical user interface that makes it easier to write documents. This editor will somewhat look like Word (Windows), Pages (MacOS), LibreOffice () etc. There are various editors available. I recommend TeXstudio since this is open-source and available on all operating systems. This would make a transition to other operating systems easier for you. Please follow the instructions below to get both parts installed. The order matters!

Step 1: Install the LaTeX distribution

Please follow the instructions based on your . You will need to decide whether you want to make a full installation of the whole library or only do a basic installation. The later one is recommended if you have admin rights on your system. It will not download and install all packages but you can always download additional packages manually.

2 Step 2: Install the LaTeX editor

The TeXstudio is recommended here. This editor is available for all operating systems. Installation packages for a plenitude of operating systems can be found on their webpage. For convenience some got downloaded and are distributed on my own webpage.
