Friday, Feb. 27th Saturday, Feb. 28th 40 Teams from all over the state came to compete

FIRST Robotics Competition a Huge Success!!! The “Panther Power” Robotics team placed 21st out of 40 teams in the preliminary 12 rounds of action. Al-Bot performed excellent with the only exception of running over a pool noodle & having it jammed in our drive system, causing a drive belt to come off. The team only has a few hours of practice before their next event at Midland Dow High School, March 20-21. Terry Fegan, Teacher & Advisor to the Panther Power Robotics Team #5224, said the event itself was a huge success!! We have had many, many compliments, both verbal & via emails. The compliments were also how welcome we made people feel here at SSC, whether it was helping them in the shop repair their bots, providing a concession stand or pre-orders from Iva’s or local resturants, and resolving many other situations as they arose. Most all of them could not believe that SSC actually pulled off an event to the degree we did, especially with this only being our 2nd year in FIRST. A big THANK YOU to all the volunteers and staff who helped make this event a huge success! M-Step Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress

PALS Help With FUEL Costs The PALs (Peer Assistant Leaders) did an activity on January 27th to raise money for people in Arenac County that need help with their fuel costs. The activity allowed SSC high school students to wear a hat for the day by purchasing a sticker that said PALs Care. The group raised $125.05. In the above picture, they are presenting the check to Mary Ann Rankey, the Community Resource Coordinator for Bay/Arenac/Gladwin County DHS.

PLEASE SUPPORT POST PROM LOCK-IN PARTY! Dear Parents and Community Members: HELP! We are starting to plan this year’s Post-Prom Lock-In Party and we need you! This party is planned by a group of volunteer parents and the SSC Student Council, and is the result of a year-long commitment of our time and effort. Even if you don’t have the time to assist with the planning and implementation of this event, we desperately need your financial support. Fundraising has become increasingly difficult the past couple of years, and to make this night a success, your donations (no matter how big or small) are essential. What is the Post-Prom Lock-In??? SSC’s Post-Prom Lock-In has become a great addition to prom night, providing our students with a safe, well-chaperoned night of fun activities and valuable prizes. Last year, 190 students made the responsible choice to attend the Lock-In instead of a Post-Prom party where alcohol and drugs could be present!!! Who can attend??? All SSC juniors and seniors are invited to the Lock-In party. Guest students may also attend Lock-In if they attend the Prom with a SSC Junior or Senior. When, Where, and What??? Saturday, April 25, from 11:55 pm – 5:00 a.m. Sunday morning at SSC High School. Games, music, sports, card tournaments, entertainment, endless supplies of food, and lots of valuable prizes! How can you help??? 1. Encourage your child to attend the Lock-In party! Parent support is key to student attendance. 2. Please call or email [email protected] if you are interested in helping with this year’s plans. 3. We accept all donations, big or small! We rely solely on donations from parents, area businesses, and various fundraisers held throughout the school year to make this event a success. We hope you will consider making a donation to support this event -- cash, checks, gift cards to local businesses, and gas cards are all welcome!!! You may send your check (payable to SSC Post-Prom) to: Standish-Sterling High School Attn: Julie O’Keefe 2401 Grove Rd. Standish, MI 48658 We would like to thank you in advance for considering this request for your time and your donations. We need lots of help to make this year’s Post-Prom Lock-In Party a fun, safe alternative for our students. If you have any questions or would like more information, please contact Julie O’Keefe or Charlotte Fleszar at the high school: 846-3660. Standish GSRP Preschool Sterling GSRP Preschool

The Standish and Sterling GSRP Preschool children went on a field trip in January to Fergie’s Pizza and Family Fare. At Fergie’s Pizza the children were able to tour the kitchen, wash their hands and top pizzas with pepperoni and ham. Then they were able to enjoy a delicious pizza lunch that they helped prepare. At Family Fare the children toured the grocery store including the deli and bakery, meat department, shipping area and cooler. They enjoyed snacks all through the tour of salami, string cheese, strawberries, and fruit snacks. Thank you to Fergie’s Pizza and Family Fare for letting the Preschool children visit your stores and for being so kind and generous! During the month of February the Sterling GSRP Preschool children learned about caring and kindness. The children talked about ways to let others know they care by using kind words, doing nice things for others and helping each other. The students wrote messages and drew pictures to their friends and mailed them to each other in their classroom mailboxes.

The preschoolers at Standish Elementary have been busy learning about the Arctic and our Community. They brought the snow indoors for a few experiments, learned about penguins and their blubber, created road maps of the town and had a grocery store of their own! Sterling GSRP children learn about the life cycle of the darkling beetle as they care for the mealworms that are the larva stage of Standish-Sterling Community School District the life cycle. Sportsmanship checklist for students and adults

Sportsmanship is the ability to win without gloating, lose without complaining and treating your opponents with respect. If you make a mistake, don’t pout or make excuses. Learn from it and be ready to continue to play. If a teammate makes a mistake, offer encouragement, not criticism. If you win, don’t rub it in. If you lose, don’t make excuses. Follow these guidelines for good sportsmanship: q Abide by the rules of the game. q Follow the directions of coach. q Try to avoid arguments. q Respect the other team’s effort. q Share in the responsibilities of the team. q Encourage teammates. q Give everyone a chance to play by the rules. q Always play fair. q Accept the judgement of the game’s officials. q End the game smoothly.
