Agric. & Cons . Serv. P.O. Box 1269 Gainesville, Florida 32602 USA ABSTRACT Over a seven-year period, approximately 35,000 spiders representing 26 families, 133 genera, and 234 species were captured in Washington County, Mississippi, by pitfall, sweepnet, vacuum, bag, and hand. Specimens were collected in 10 different habitat types and in four vegetational strata . Old-field habitats yielded the most species (152) and residential lawns the fewest (14) . Considering all habitats sampled, the ground layer produced 111 species, the herbaceous strata 133, the shrub layer 49, and the tree strata 30 species . The sweepnet method of capture obtained 128 species, pitfall 95, hand 61, vacuum 53, and bagging 19 species. The largest number of species were obtained in spring and early summer (maximum of 125 in May), with the fewest in mid-winter (Jan . = 24) . Twenty-one species were considered abundant, 51 common, 67 uncommon, and 95 rare . Additions to the state list of Dorris (1972) number 102 species, for a new state total of 364 species . A comparison with the North American fauna and with other surveys indicates that Washington County is underrepresented both in cursorial forms active on the soil surface and web-spinning forms typical of undisturbed habitats .

Wolff1 Biology Department Trinity Christian College 6601 West College Drive Palos Heights, IL 60463 USA The following is a list of the jumping spiders that have been reported from the Caribbean region. We have interpreted this in a broad sense, so that all islands from Trinidad to the Bahamas have been included. Furthermore, we have included Bermuda, even though it is well north of the Caribbean region proper, as a more logical extension of the island fauna rather than the continental North American fauna. This was mentioned by Banks (1902b) nearly a century ago. Country or region (e. g., pantropical) records are included for those species which have broader ranges than the Caribbean area. We have not specifically included the islands of the Florida Keys, even though these could legitimately be included in the Caribbean region, because the known fauna is mostly continental. However, when Florida is known as the only continental U.S.A.

The type species Emmenomma oculatum is redescribed and considered a senior synonym of E. beauchenicum. Emmenomma oculatum obscurum is removed from synonymy with E. oculatum, raised to the species level and redescribed; the male of this species remains unknown. A new species, Emmenomma joshuabelli sp. nov. is described. The presence of a grate shaped tapetum outside the Lycosoidea clade is described. Detailed images are provided for all known species. Key words: Chile, Spiders, Naevius, Anisacate, Tibial gland Introduction The spider genus Emmenomma was proposed by Simon (1884) based on several male and female specimens from Tierra del Fuego, Chile. Due to its atypical eye pattern, with greatly enlarged lateral eyes, and peculiar male palp, with an elbowed and flexibly attached dorsal tibial apophysis (DTA) that rests on the retrolateral side of the palp and can be easily mistaken for a RTA, Emmenomma is not easily confused with other spiders and there are no synonyms of the generic name.

E-mail: [email protected]; [email protected] Abstract: the present paper compiles taxonomic information of spider species from Costanera Sur Ecological Reserve (RECS), Buenos Aires City, Argentina. The list is composed by published records, as well as data from new samplings obtained during the last eight years and other material deposited in the collection of the Museo Argentino de Ciencias Naturales “Bernardino Rivadavia”. For each species, the material examined is detailed and comments or identification notes are added in relevant cases. Specific richness is 191 distributed in 35 families of the infraorder Araneomorphae; 22 species are cited for the first time for the Argentine fauna and the known distribution of over 30 species is broadened, becoming RECS their southern limit. Moreover, considering the 49 morphospecies that could not be identified (many of them new or potentially new species for science), the Argentine spider fauna might increase approximately in 70 species.

In this contribution the female of the jumping spider Lyssomanes miniaceus is described and its morphology is illustrated. Females are distinguished by having spherical, slightly oval spermathecae, the copulatory openings towards the back, and sparse white hairs ventrally on femora I and II; the last character could be a unique trait shared by both sexes. Additionally, a new southernmost record plus new illustration of the little-known species L. belgranoi are given. Key words. Argentina, jumping spider, taxonomy. • Environmental Heterogeneity, Not Distance, Structures Montane Epigaeic Spider Assemblages in North-Western Patagonia (Argentina)
Journal of Insect Conservation https://doi.org/10.1007/s10841-017-0034-8 ORIGINAL PAPER Environmental heterogeneity, not distance, structures montane epigaeic spider assemblages in north-western Patagonia (Argentina) Santigo Aisen1 · Victoria Werenkraut1 · María E. We analysed elevational variation in the taxonomic composition of epigaeic spider assemblages across five mountains in north-western Patagonia (Argentina) to examine the relative importance of dispersal (distance) limitation and environmental heterogeneity on a regional scale. The distance limitation hypothesis predicts greater taxonomic similarity between sampling sites separated by short geographical distances than between mountain peaks separated by longer distances, a lack of indicator species of macro-habitats, and weak associations between spider species composition and environmental gradients. Alternatively, the environmental heterogeneity hypothesis predicts that taxonomic differentia- tion will occur over short distances along elevation gradients in association with the turnover in major habitats and change in environmental conditions, and that indicator species will be present. We collected spiders using 486 pitfall traps arranged in fifty-four 100-m2 grid plots of nine traps separated by ~ 100 m of elevation, from the base to the summit of each mountain. Multivariate analyses identified spider assemblages that were associated with macro-habitats rather than with mountains. Local environmental variation (mainly in vegetation cover), precipitation and soil characteristics influenced the spatial vari- ation in species composition.
