Director, Mezzo-soprano, Teacher and Mentor. “ The lady is superb, whether she turns her artistry to opera, jazz or Sondheim “. A statement that sums up the remarkable talents of Sally Burgess as one of the world's leading operatic actresses and dramatic musical performers. After 30 years as an extraordinary exponent of musical and dramatic performance, she is expanding her career to guide the next generation of artists as a vocal professor, mentor, stage director, and creator of Young Artist Programs worldwide. It is her versatility and diversity of styles and her deep understanding of what creates a moving performance, that enhances the success her work with the young artists of today. Sally made her directorial debut for Tete a Tete Opera in the summer of 2009 in Mark Glentworth’s new opera Ula followed by a new production of Cosi van Tutte for English Chamber Opera. She directed the world premiere of Sonya’s Story during the summer of 2010 to excellent national reviews, a production that will tour internationally both in it’s current one act form and as the complete opera Uncle Vanya due to premiere in 2013. A production of Poppea for the Guildhall Scool of Music and Drama Undergraduate program was followed in the summer of 2012 by her new production of Il Trovatore for Dorset Opera, UK. In July 2013 she directed her new production of Cosi fan Tutte for the Dubrovnik Summer Festival. Sally is sought after by students at home and abroad having developed a thriving private studio. She gives master classes and workshops throughout the world. Sally’s career as a singer has always been, and now her teaching is, holistically based, including work on breathing, the physicality and psychology of performance, exploring text, imagination and Alexander technique. She offers day workshops as part of her studio. She works with established singers as well as those at the beginning of their studies. As a Vocal Professor at the RCM for 10 years, she was awarded her FRCM in 2011. She also teaches stagecraft and directs opera scenes. Sally also teaches The Art of Opera Performance at the GSMD which culminates in performances at the School: Zauberflote 2011, Poppea 2012 and Albert Herring 2013. Sally works with singers worldwide giving masterclasses, workshops and leading competitions across Europe, Russia, and South Africa. She has lead the Young Singers Programme for Les Azuriales Opera Festival, Nice for four seasons and returns annually to Moscow in collaboration with London Gates Education. In 2013 she lead the inaugural Performing Arts International Festival singing competition, workshops, master classes and gala performance in Durban, South Africa. In the 13/14 season she returns to Moscow for “ Vocalists 2013 “ and will lead the international jury for it’s singing competition. She works with singers at the Royal Opera House on the Jette Parker Young Artists Programme, at Glyndebourne on the Jerwood Young Artists Programme, for Co-Opera Company, Associated Studios Opera Courses, and with British Youth Opera. Sally has a close relationship with Live Music Now, fronting their vocal master class series in the aLuMNi programme. She adjudicates and examines for all UK conservatoires and is a member of the British Voice Association. During a long and distinguished singing career she has made some of the most exciting operatic roles her own - the Sunday Times describing her as “ the greatest exponent of Carmen I have ever seen” a role she debuted for English National Opera’s new production by David Poutney and then went on to perform for the Metropolitan Opera, the Opéra National de Paris, Bastille, the Bavarian State Opera, Munich, the Bregenz Festival and in Zurich, Berlin, New Zealand and Portland. Her Azucena Il Trovatore excited similar reviews - the Guardian considered her performance for Opera North “ great singing by a remarkable artist “ and her Amneris Aida for Opera North was described as ... “ rarely can a performance have been so completely dominated “ ( a role also performed for Scottish Opera and in Strasbourg, Nancy, Lausanne and Wiesbaden ). Her performances of Gershwin songs for the BBC London Proms broadcast live on TV; an evening at Highgrove House in the presence of HRH Prince of Wales; and performances with the BBC Concert Orchestra of On the Town and Cabaret at the Royal Festival Hall, London have further expanded her reputation as an artist of limitless talents who can offer repertoire from the range of classics of Gershwin, Cole Porter, Richard Rodgers and Kern to works by contemporary writers such as Sondheim and Bernstein together with songs written specially for her. Bieito’s continued association with the company shows ENO’s commitment to highly theatrical and new interpretations of core repertoire. Following the success of his Carmen at ENO in 2012, described by The Guardian as ‘a cogent, gripping piece of work’, Bieito’s production of Fidelio comes to the London Coliseum after its 2010 premiere in Munich. Working with designer Rebecca Ringst, Bieito presents a vast Escher-like labyrinth set, symbolising the powerfully claustrophobic nature of the opera. Edward Gardner, ENO’s highly acclaimed Music Director, 2013 Olivier Award-nominee and recipient of an OBE for services to music, conducts an outstanding cast led by Stuart Skelton singing Florestan and Emma Bell as Leonore. Since his definitive performance of Peter Grimes at ENO, Skelton is now recognised as one of the finest heldentenors of his generation, appearing at the world’s major opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera, New York, and Opéra National de Paris.

  • Overture Opera Guides
overture opera guides in association with We are delighted to have the opportunity to work with Overture Publishing on this series of opera guides and to build on the work English National Opera did over twenty years ago on the Calder Opera Guide Series. As well as reworking and updating existing titles, Overture and ENO have commissioned new titles for the series and all of the guides will be published to coincide with repertoire being staged by the company at the London Coliseum. We hope that these guides will prove an invaluable resource now and for years to come, and that by delving deeper into the history of an opera, the poetry of the libretto and the nuances of the score, read- ers’ understanding and appreciation of the opera and the art form in general will be enhanced. John Berry Artistic Director, ENO The publisher John Calder began the Opera Guides series under the editorship of the late Nicholas John in association with English National Opera in 1980. It ran until 1994 and eventu- ally included forty-eight titles, covering fifty-eight operas. The books in the series were intended to be companions to the works that make up the core of the operatic repertory. They contained articles, illustrations, musical examples and a complete libretto and singing translation of each opera in the series, as well as bibliographies and discographies. The aim of the present relaunched series is to make available again the guides already published in a redesigned format with new illustrations, some newly commissioned articles, updated reference sections and a literal translation of the libretto that will enable the reader to get closer to the intentions and meaning of the original.

  • Donald Runnicles Leads Cso in Program of Works by Elgar, Strauss, and Britten
For Immediate Release: Press Contacts: April 29, 2016 Eileen Chambers, 312-294-3092 Photos Available By Request [email protected] DONALD RUNNICLES LEADS CSO IN PROGRAM OF WORKS BY ELGAR, STRAUSS, AND BRITTEN May 5, 7 and 10, 2016 CHICAGO—Conductor Donald Runnicles leads the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO) in concerts on Thursday, May 5, at 8:00 p.m., Saturday, May 7, at 8:00 p.m., and Tuesday, May 10, at 7:30 p.m. The program includes Benjamin Britten’s Sinfonia da requiem, Richard Strauss’ gripping tone poem Death and Transfiguration, and Edward Elgar’s Enigma Variations. Britten’s Sinfonia da requiem, opens the program. Written in 1940 as a commission for the 2600th anniversary celebrations of the Japanese emperor Hirohito’s ruling dynasty, the piece went unused for the occasion due to its notably mournful tone. Britten’s beautifully orchestrated and strikingly powerful work was later premiered by the New York Philharmonic in Carnegie Hall in 1941. The program continues with one of Richard Strauss’ early tone poems, Death and Transfiguration, which traces a man’s journey through the pain of death to his eventual redemption. Concluding the evening’s program is Elgar’s Variations on an Original Theme, Op. 36 (Enigma) which contains 14 charming and witty musical portraits of the composer’s circle of acquaintances and one of Elgar himself. Arguably one of the most popular English classical works of the 20th century, the Enigma Variations was given its U.S. premiere by the CSO in 1902. Internationally renowned conductor Donald Runnicles serves as General Music Director of the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Chief Conductor of BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, and Music Director of the Grand Teton Music Festival, as well as Principal Guest Conductor with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra.

He asks whether it is possible to get even close to realising on stage a work that is so densely layered, nuanced and mystically suggestive in its musical atmosphere.
