LIVING OUT THE CHRISTIAN FAITH IN DEVON WORLD MISSION

THE DIOCESE OF EXETER and the Melanesian Mission go back some 160 years, when John Coleridge Patteson, a young curate from Alfington in East Devon became a missionary working in the South Pacific. ‘Coley’ as he was fondly known became the first Bishop January of Melanesia and was popular with Melanesians, saying of them – ‘I want Year 3 Pupils with Margaret Razak, a teacher them to become Christians in the warm at St Nicholas (Anglican Church of Melanesia colour of their own skins.’ Although – ACoM) School, Honiara, the Solomon Islands. martyred in 1871 the Anglican Church Four teachers visited Devon in July. has flourished throughout Melanesia and people still speak highly of Coley and of his home in Devon.

Today we have Church of England Schools in this Diocese linked with Church of Melanesia schools in the Solomon Islands. An exchange of teachers and pupils crossing over 9,000 miles continue this extraordinary fellowship. Wantok is a pidgin word and concept which means ‘one talk’: we speak the same language and we look after each other. Patteson would be very pleased with the Wantok in Christianity which we have with the people of Melanesia today.

We are also companions with the Diocese of Cyprus and the Gulf, the Catholic diocese of Bayeux-Lisieux in Normandy the Diocese of Thika in Kenya.

EVERY YEAR Devon churches are invited to mark Fairtrade Fortnight. In 2015 they hosted a Devon cream tea, emblematic of our twin goals of using our purchasing power to ensure that we buy ‘fair’ and ‘local’ produce. Fairtrade tea, dairy and jam produced a tempting spread when Paul Tiony, a Kenyan Fairtrade tea producer toured Devon during Fairtrade fortnight, and talked to church refreshment volunteers and Traidcraft suppliers.

Paul described the many benefits that contracts for the Fairtrade tea, grown by local people, has brought to their communities since 2006. These are not just the benefit of a higher, more reliable income, but funding to build twelve schools, nine health clinics and dispensaries, and to develop four water projects. They’ve also been able to pay secondary school fees for 900 students.

Over 130 churches in Exeter Diocese are now registered as Fairtrade Churches, committed to serving Fairtrade tea and coffee at events, promoting other Fairtrade products and using Fairtrade Fortnight to spread the news of how we can all promote trade justice in our daily lives.

For more information visit the diocesan website and click on “Faith in Action” under the “Church Life” section, or find out more from fairtrade.org.uk and traidcraft.org.uk

THE CONGREGATION of St Mary the Virgin, Walkhampton have reason to celebrate following the completion of the project to re-order the west end of the church. The church now has a full disabled toilet, kitchen, and a new platform for bell ringing accessed by a March spiral staircase, all finished off with an etched glass screen depicting animals and moorland scenes from the .

The project took 12 years of hard work, fundraising and generosity from the small but active congregation, the local community and grant-making bodies.

The church worked closely with the Church Buildings Office which covers the work of the Diocesan Advisory Committee (DAC) and the Church Buildings Strategy Committee. Advisers Louise and Eve are the first point of contact for any queries relating to church buildings or churchyards.

Calling on their voluntary experts and specialist consultants, the DAC provides advice to PCCs about proposed works, offers training for Churchwardens and Fabric Committees and the Advisers can help through the faculty application process.

FOUR FISHERMEN were going about their daily work down at the water’s edge on a hot day 2000 years ago. But Jesus tapped them on the shoulder and said, ‘Leave all that. Come with me and I will teach you how to fish for people.’ For Simon, Andrew, James and John, life was never the same again.

When God tapped Andrew Down on the shoulder he was working as an addictions counsellor. It was a sense of call which came through conversations with a number of people including his vicar and members of his church congregation. The conversation continued as Andrew was interviewed by different people in the diocese, under the guidance of the Director of Ordinands, and attended a national selection conference. He was recommended to train for ordained ministry, so he and his family moved to Ripon College, just outside Oxford. They came back to this diocese three years later, for Andrew to become curate at St James’ Church, Exeter.

Recently, people from many walks of life in Devon have been called to explore ordained ministry. Among them: administrators, farmers, teachers, ex-service personnel, youth workers, a coast guard, home-makers, factory workers, care assistants and a former police officer. Might God be calling you?

WE ARE BECOMING increasingly aware of the damage our human activity is causing to the support systems which sustain life on God’s earth. With growing climate change, loss of species, excessive pollution and declining resources we have to re-think and live more as if tomorrow mattered. We believe the world is created as a holy place, yet we readily desecrate it without regard for its intrinsic value or for future generations.

Two key environmental issues are how we protect wildlife biodiversity, and how we produce our food.

One Devon church project that is making a small difference is at Chagford parish church with the support of conservationist Nick Baker and the Diocesan Advisory Committee. There is a move to try and make their building more swift-friendly.

Churches are ideal for this - their steep high sides encourage swifts to make their nests. That is exactly what the congregation at St Michael’s hope to do by providing special nest boxes, hidden behind the louvres of the bell tower. By playing the calls of a swift colony they hope to attract more birds. With the installation of cameras they also hope to be able to show the school and the rest of the community the very private May life of these enigmatic summer birds. FOLLOWING the formal launch of the Gulworthy church members receive their certificate. Parish Giving Scheme in March 2015, Photo: Rebecca Paveley churches have really embraced this new approach to Christian giving. There are currently 113 churches registered, and there are well over 500 active donors. June The scheme is already bringing £44,000 in to parish bank accounts each month (half a million pounds a year), and is helping treasurers immensely by reducing their administration commitments.

The parish receives the entire gift within 10 days of the person making their donation. This amount includes the gift aid, which is claimed centrally. Many members have opted to increase their gift automatically with inflation.

As such, PGS is supporting Christians to review their giving as part of their discipleship journey.

In July the Diocese celebrated the 100th church registration to the Parish Giving Scheme. This award went to the Gulworthy team. Bishop Robert was delighted to share a PGS 100 cake with church members from the pilot parishes.

john_mayne_stonemason.indd 1 9/24/2012 12:30:13 AM CHILDRENS’ WORK

MATTHEW 18: The disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who is greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven?” Jesus called a little child to him and put the child among them. Then he said, “I tell you the truth, unless you turn from your sins and become like little children, you will July never get into the Kingdom of Heaven. So anyone who becomes as humble as this little child is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven. And anyone who welcomes a little child like this on my behalf is welcoming me.”

There are many humble congregations all over Devon learning from children about what God’s kingdom is really like, where forgiveness overrules hate, love does not discriminate, the least are treated with special honour and those who welcome children are actually welcoming Jesus.

The role of the church has never been simply to get children into church buildings; its purpose is to go out and be Good News to the children. Although Jesus did go to the Synagogue, he spent most of his time in the community, in people’s homes, public spaces, markets and fields. Where do you spend time with children? How are you being Good News to your community?

Let’s pray for everyone in our Mission Communities as we reach, teach, learn from and grow disciples amongst children of Devon.

ACROSS OUR DIOCESE chaplains are working at grass roots level to offer support to people in their everyday lives. From Higher Education and University chaplains to hospital and police chaplains these dedicated people show God’s love to all they meet and are ready to respond when needed.

Sarah Jeffrey has been Lead Police Chaplain for Devon and Cornwall for nearly two years. She says: “Police chaplaincy is one of the most rewarding and challenging ways to show God’s love and compassion on the ground. Coming alongside officers and police staff to share their concerns, hurts, and joy creates a very special relationship. Whether it’s delivering pastoral care in the station, supporting while in cars or walking on the street with officers, chaplains are a part of the police family. Among other things, we celebrate with the force at our Christmas carol services, share their pain at the annual Police Memorial Day and lift them up to God during the National Day of Prayer.”

Sacha Pearce works as a team chaplain in Derriford Hospital in Plymouth and adds: “Being a hospital chaplain is a privilege. It is a ministry of being alongside people who are often in a broken place, listening to them and helping to create a space into which they tell their story as they work out how to face their own particular acute human experience.” August PHILIP SOURBUT MISSION AND MINISTRY A Police Chaplain chats to people at the Devon County Show. EVERYONE, children and adults alike, must be able to attend church and its related activities in the knowledge that their safety and well-being is assured. ‘ Safeguarding’ is the term used to cover the myriad of preventative and protective measures we put in place to ensure the promotion of safety and well- being for all.

This includes safer recruitment of staff and volunteers, responsible use of the internet and the provision of training courses to keep our leaders up to date with the latest policies and legislation.

The Diocesan Safeguarding Team undertakes a large variety of work to support parishes in their safeguarding responsibilities. They are well supported by parish safeguarding representatives who provide advice and assistance at a local level.

No query is too large or too small for the Diocesan Safeguarding Team. If you are concerned about a situation, an individual or a procedure, please do not hesitate to contact them.

A RECENT AUDIT among faith projects in Plymouth found that volunteers were The HousingDelegates Justice at the Roadshow included representatives of passionately committed to “caring for SidmouthHousing Gateway Justice Project, Churches Action on Homelessness others”. Compassion was the response (CHAT)Roadshow. and Cullompton Foodbank. Photograph: Guy Cruls. in Sidmouth when a homeless man, Photo: Guy Cruls Tommy Duffy, was found dead on the seafront. This inspired a small group to share their expertise and address needs of local homeless people. Soon their group, Sidmouth Gateway Project, came to the defence of another man threatened with illegal eviction.

This is how things often work - a coming together of availability and relevant experience, in response to local need. Rather than requiring funding, the resulting activities draw on our compassion, willingness to learn and ability to work with others.

Over 80 people from churches and homelessness service providers across Devon came together for a Housing Justice roadshow. This national Christian charity also provided training for seven churches in Paignton who opened a Winter Night Shelter.

The biblical concepts of ‘Peace and Justice’ are about restoring and healing relationships in communities, particularly with the most vulnerable. So whether we support local, national, or global projects, our compassion and joy is always central, as we relate the good news of the Gospel to our society today.

IT IS A CHALLENGING TIME for England’s Cathedrals, balancing being both mother churches for their dioceses, and tourist attractions. As a living church, Exeter Cathedral hosts large services, including ordinations and installations, as well as daily Morning Prayer and Evensong December services; while as a heritage site we work hard to maintain the building’s fabric and improve visitor facilities with very little subsidy from government or other sources.

At a running cost of £4,000 a day, income from entry charges to visitors continues to be essential, to keep the doors of the Cathedral open. However, we do all we can to ensure that those who worship in the parish churches across Devon feel at home in their Cathedral. To this end we have sent copies of a new parish card to every mission community, to allow members of parish churches in the Diocese to enter the Cathedral whenever they wish, without having to pay.

Despite their challenges, Cathedrals are always inspiring and creative places, and Exeter is no exception. The number of people worshipping in Cathedrals is growing nationally. Following the success of our monthly Holy Ground worship, we have introduced an additional Sundays@7 service, reaching out to new communities choosing to make the Cathedral their spiritual home, as we seek to serve the mission of Christ in this place.

IN 2012, the Diocese took the radical Ed Hodges preparing for ordination step of creating a new church. Some at St Paul’s Cathedral, London. might say we already have plenty, but Photo: St Paul’s Cathedral this one is different. It is all age, but exists to reach out to one group - young people with little or no experience of church or Christian faith. It is called Unlimited and is a Bishop’s Mission Order. This means it’s an official part of the Diocese with an order from the Bishop for its particular mission. Unlimited exists so young people can encounter the God that they’ve never met and live different lives as a result.

Rev James Grier leads it with his wife Liz and a leadership team. He says that: “We hold regular cafes and events for young people, even a fortnightly cafe from midnight until 3am as a sanctuary for those out clubbing. Church and faith are totally irrelevant to most young people today, so we go to where they are and hope to help them see something of Jesus and his vital relevance for life.”

In 2015, their first ever ordinand, Ed Hodges, was ordained at St Paul’s Cathedral. Ed came to Exeter as a student and joined Unlimited in his first year. He says: “The time I spent at Unlimited church has had a big impact on my decision to offer myself forward for Ordained ministry. I loved the opportunities to reach out to the next generation in the city and I realised that God was calling me to give my life to be a part of leading his church.”

THE DIOCESE OF EXETER remains committed to its mission: “That every human community in Devon has a praying, worshipping and DIOCESE witnessing Christian presence, working to make disciples of Jesus OF Christ and to bring that community’s life into the kingdom of God and EXETER that everyone has the opportunity to engage with the fullness of the THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND Church’s life locally.” In his installation address in July 2014, Bishop IN DEVON Robert established three important principles by which we aim to fulfil this promise, by:

• Growing in prayer; • Making new disciples; and • Serving the people of Devon with joy. Good Friday pilgrimage walk in Sheepstor. Photo: Nick Shutt

Financial performance in the last few years has been encouraging, with continuing increases in the level of Common Fund contributions received from parishes, the level of generosity shown is inspiring! We have also seen an increase in the value of our investment and this enables the level of requested increase in Common Fund to be kept low, while at the same time providing resources to stimulate growth.

The biggest challenge facing the diocese over the next few years still remains how we respond to the projected fall in the number of people in our congregations, resulting from the current older age profile. The Bishop’s Diocesan Council has agreed that we should invest resources to grow the Church in Devon, as failure to do so will make decline inevitable. This is a really exciting time and will involve investing in new initiatives and trying different ways to grow our church – key to this will be identifying the leadership and support required to stimulate this growth. New initiatives take time to have an effect, so the resources will need to be carefully deployed to ensure they enable the desired growth to happen.

The Parish Giving Scheme was formally launched by Bishop Robert in early 2015 and well over 100 churches have so far registered with the scheme and over £0.5 million per annum is already flowing into parishes’ bank accounts. This number is growing all the time and we are delighted that the people of our diocese have embraced this fantastic initiative so keenly.
