MINISTERIAL MUSINGS

There is a well known story which you may or may not have heard and which is generally attributed to St Augustine in the 4th century.

Once upon a time, so the story goes, there was a young boy who That is where the story usually lived near the sea. meeting to find out why the starfish were beached in the first place, and how it could be prevented in future. The possibilities are limitless – but all will involve coordination, networking, planning, problem- solving and a lot of determination. No one can do it alone.

So, why am I telling this story today. Well, we’re coming near to the time of our Annual Parochial Bible Study Church Meetings, and reflecting on every Thursday - this story might help us to in St Botolph’s Church understand how much can be achieved if we all do our bit. TUESDAY GROUP

On 20th January Margaret showed photographs and talked about her visit to Russia. The accommodation for the trip was a boat called the Amakatarina. The journey commenced in St Petersburg where they had a city tour, a visit to the Hermitage Museum formerly the Winter Palace of the Tsars, an evening at the ballet to see Swan Lake. and a trip by hydrofoil to Pushkin home of Catherine's Palace the summer residence of the Tsars. On leaving St Petersburg they travelled across Lake Onega the largest in Europe to the UNESCO site of Kizhi Island where many wooden buildings are to be found including a traditional farmhouse, windmill, bell tower and the Church of the Transfiguration which is multi domed and was constructed completely without nails. The journey continued through lakes, canals and rivers including the Volga finally arriving in Moscow. They visited the Armoury Museum at the Kremlin where the coronation robes and regalia of the Tsars is housed, the Annunciation Cathedral where the Tsars were crowned, and Red Square. The last day included a city tour, a ride on the metro and a visit to the War Memorial where a wreath laying ceremony was about to take place to commemorate the German Invasion of Russia on 21st June 1941.

On a cold and frosty evening on 3rd February RoseMarie was our speaker. She showed photographs and spoke about her experiences as President of Mothers Union, representing the Leicester Diocese she travelled to meetings and conferences in many parts of the country, she was also selected to attend a conference in Australia. She met fellow Mothers Union members from all over the world at these meetings and had many wonderful experiences to relate. She also spoke about the fundraising side of the Mothers Union, the Chalet Holidays Scheme and the work to support the families of inmates at Leicester Prison.

The Lions March 2015

The children have really enjoyed their Key Stage one topic on castles which we finished this week. We found out about Motte and Bailey castles and researched the different jobs in a castle. We found out about the gong farmer who had to clean the toilets out! None of us would have wanted that job! We found out about how to attack and defend a castle and we all made a catapult. A test was carried out to see which material would travel the furthest. It was Blu-tack! We had a wonderful day visiting Tamworth Castle. We had a good look around and put Mrs Hopewell in the stocks. After lunch we helped to put the armour for a knight on a stand and some of us held a sword (that was very heavy) and a bow and arrow. Our next job was to lay the table for Lord and Lady Ferris and the servants so they could have their lunch. We all had a turn at putting something on the table and we had to decide if it would go on the Lord and Lady’s table or the servant table. We found out how important the salt was and how it had to be placed on the table and then bowed to while walking backwards. After that Lady Ferris said she had sorted some of her children’s clothes out and we were able to dress in them. Everyone at the castle thought we wore funny clothes! To finish our topic off we had a banquet in the school hall. We made silver goblets and had food and a drink. Each class danced to some Medieval music.

My name is Charlotte and this is what we do at handbell club. At handbells we go up and down the scale at the start to make sure that our handbells are in the right order. We've played in the church in the nativity-it went a bit wrong but it was ok in the end. We played in a music show at Charnwood College at Christmas and that was really good. I love learning new songs. Handbells are really fun. I love it. We play every Tuesday which is now my favourite day. We play for half an hour and Mr Knight comes to school to show us what to do. I have learnt lots so far and all my friends think it's really cool to play the handbells. And that's why I love handbells. SOCIAL & FUNDRAISING FORTHCOMING EVENTS:

20th March 2015 Skittles Evening at The Three Crowns, Hathern.

17th April 2015 Beetle Drive in church hall.

See pew sheets for more details of these guaranteed fun-packed events! St Botolph’s Mothers’ Union Our first meeting of 2015 was held on January 14th and was our AGM. About 24 Members were present in spite of the bad weather. New members appointed to the Committee were Ros Stevenson and Heather Parkinson, who agreed to act as Secretary. There was also an interesting update from Glenys Wilcox on the development and work of the Shepshed Food Bank and how it is meeting the needs of a number of people in the area. RoseMarie spoke to us about our theme for the year ‘United in Prayer’ and stressed the importance of prayer being at the heart of all we do.. At our February meeting we were pleased to enrol Wendy Parsons as a Member and this was followed by a fascinating talk from Reverend Jane Micklethwaite about her work as a Chaplain at East Midlands Airport. Her account of the way the chaplains reach out in their ministry both to those passing through the airport and to the staff who work there was most inspiring. Our next meeting will be held on March 11th when we will be led in a Lent Meditation by Reverend Pam Harvey. Heather

ST JAMES' MOTHERS' UNION REPORT Our February meeting was our A.G.M., with reports from our Branch Leader Janet, and from the Treasurer, of another year which was mostly a good one. This was despite Janet's prolonged illness keeping her away from some meetings and activities although she continues to devote much time, energy and love to our Branch and the members – all very much appreciated. The triennial election of officers was due and the same three were re-elected but with 2 or 3 new committee members. Lesley then showed her videos of last year's outings and our visit to Hereford in 2006. Please note that the Women's World Day of Prayer service for Shepshed, at 10.30 on March 6th, will be at Christchurch Methodists not (as in the programme) St Winefride's. Hathern MU are not holding their Holy Week Communion this year so instead, on March 16th, we will be holding a regular monthly meeting, at 2.30 in the Hall: Pam Bird is going to speak to us on “Quiet Reflections with Pictures” so that should be very good. The day before, Sunday March 15th at 4 pm, we will have our Mothering Sunday service in church. The guest preacher will be Revd. Pam Harvey, MU diocesan chaplain, so we are hoping for a good turnout by our members and friends. Lesley Bates.

We pray that Lent is an opportunity for you and your families to dis- cover your part in the covenant or agreement that God has given us. We will zoom in on making binoculars to help us think about God focus- ing on each one of us and asking us to focus on him too. There have been a few new born babies in our church family recently. We can make a baby collage to welcome them . We can paint rainbows. A rainbow is a reminder of God's promise or cov- enant, and we can make a people string to remember all the people that God loves. Change to Service times at St Botolph’s

Three years ago we had a vision meeting at St Botolph’s to look at the future direction of the Church. At the end of the day people felt that our priority should be in developing our work with young families. How were we to do that? Considering the fact that our biggest growth was in the monthly Family Service on the first Sunday of the month, we decided to build on that and have more Family Services. This meant changing the times of services to accommodate a weekly Family service. So we moved the weekly service of Holy Communion to 11 in order to have a weekly Family Service at 9.30am. Change is always difficult and I know that having the service of Holy Communion at 11am did inconvenience a lot of people but people were so gracious. They seemed to accept the reason for the change and live with the inconvenience.

The Family Service has been a great success and we have been able to nurture many more young families into our Church community and several of the young parents have come forward for Confirmation.

Where do we go next? Having nurtured these young families, there is now a desire for more teaching and more attention to the age group above the toddlers. The young families are also saying that 9.30am is too early for them and the Holy Communion people are saying that 11am is too late for them.

After much thought and prayer we have decided to run both services at 10am on a Sunday morning starting from the 1st of May. The Family Service will be in the hall, with the option of parents leaving their children and coming into Church, and for everybody to join us for Holy Communion after the Family Service has finished. We will continue to have the Family Service in Church at 10am on the first Sunday of the month with Holy Communion at 6pm on that Sunday.

We would welcome comments.
