Today (Sunday) we you could say, ministry to others is basically who we are are celebrating our as followers of Jesus. patronal feast – the I think it is very appropriate that on this, our feast day, Feast of the Holy we are highlighting some of the ways in which we . Only hopefully make known to others by the love with three are which we carry out our various ministries. I named in Sacred wholeheartedly thank all those selfless volunteers who Scripture: Michael, work – usually quietly and behind the scenes – to and . continue the work of the Angels – the Messengers – The name Raphael who bring to the world the best news of all: that no one means, “God Heals”; is like God! Gabriel means, “God’s Strength”; and Michael means, “Who is Like God?” Michael’s question was posed rhetorically to Lucifer, who boasted that he intended to make himself like God. In a reflection on Angels, Emeritus Benedict had this to say: “But what is an ? Sacred Scripture and the Church’s tradition enable us to discern two aspects. On the one hand, the Angel is a creature who stands before God, oriented to God with his whole being. All three names of the Archangels end with the word “El”, which means “God”. God is inscribed in their names, in their nature. Their true nature is existing in his sight – and for him. In this very way, the second aspect that characterizes Angels is also explained: they are God’s messengers. They bring God to men, they open heaven and thus open earth. Precisely because they are with God, they can also be very close to man. Indeed, God is closer to each one of us than we ourselves are. The Angels speak to man of what constitutes his true being, of what in his life is so often concealed and buried. They bring him back to himself, touching him on God’s behalf. In this sense, we human beings must also always return to being “angels” to one another – angels who turn people away from erroneous ways and direct them always, ever anew, to God.” In essence, just as Angels are messengers from God, we too, are all called to share in the work of announcing the Good News of salvation. The early Christians distinguished themselves by their love, as Jesus had foretold: “This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another” (John 13:35). Their love attracted others to Christ. And so,

DON’T MISS THE

REFLECTION on :45-51 (From epriest.com) It is traditionally understood that the Nathaniel St. John refers to is St. Bartholomew the apostle. Nathaniel, like all of us, receives a call to be an apostle. In Nathaniel’s case, the call does not come directly from Jesus, but through a mediator, Philip, who testifies to him who Jesus is. At first Nathaniel doubts, but he does not totally reject the idea and goes to meet Jesus. Christ calls many of us through a mediator: a friend, relative, consecrated person, etc. Even though there may be doubts, as long as there is some opening in us, Christ is able to work and draw us closer to himself. Nathaniel’s contact with Christ results in a profession of faith, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel.” Here there is no doubt or skepticism. The encounter with Christ produces a clear and firm affirmation. Philip, the intermediary, drops out of the picture and Nathaniel has a direct and strong personal relationship with Christ. Nathaniel becomes a convinced apostle. So too, even though we may have come to Christ through intermediaries, we gradually begin to base our faith on our own personal experience of Christ. Nathaniel – St. Bartholomew – went on to become one of the Twelve Apostles. Tradition has it that he preached the Gospel in India and where he died a , flayed alive and beheaded. No doubt it was his insight of faith, his perception of the greater things that gave him the strength and fortitude to preach the Gospel and die a martyr. From his first simple encounter with Christ he became a great saint who lived his life in profound union with God. Conversation with Christ: Lord, I know that sometimes I can be a skeptic, not trusting that you can transform my life. So often I have these simple prayerful dialogues with you; please help me so that these small conversations can blossom into a firm profession of faith and a tenacious apostolic zeal. Resolution: I will pray the Creed sometime during the day to renew my faith in Christ.
