WELCOME

European Athletics President’s Welcome Message Glasgow 2019 Welcome from Billy Garrett, European Athletics Indoor Championships 2019 Steering Group Chairperson I am very pleased to welcome everyone to the 35th edition of the European Athletics Indoor Championships which are here in Glasgow, Glasgow has a long-standing and strong relationship with athletics, the second time that this city has been the host of this competition. and a reputation for hosting world-class sporting events. When the Kelvin Hall International Sports Arena opened in 1988, it gave the The previous time was 1990 and, on that occasion, we had 28 Member city a new home for athletics events and saw Glasgow host its first Federations represented and 370 athletes. It is a measure of how our European Athletics Indoor Championships in 1990. sport has grown in the last three decades, even considering the changes in the political landscape in that time, that European Athletics anticipates Now, almost 30 years later, we are glad to welcome the 35th edition nearly all of our 51 Member Federations to send participants and of the Championships back to our city, and to the iconic Emirates around 600 athletes to compete. Glasgow is one of the top five sporting cities in the world – an accolade we’ve held for three years and worked hard to achieve. Events such as the European Athletics Indoor Nowadays these championship are biennial and last for three days, and although these Championships allow us to showcase our city around the world, and to prove that People Make innovations came about many years ago, they are small but relevant examples about how Glasgow. European Athletics has constantly strived to make our competitions more attractive to athletes and the general public alike; and I can promise we will continue to do so. Every one of you knows how sport can be transformative for every single person involved, whether that’s as an elite coach or a volunteer. Our goal is to host a spectacular event, and to The magnificent Emirates Arena that is the venue for these championships has quickly inspire as many of our citizens as possible. Thank you for being here to share this time with us. established itself in the seven years since it was built as one of Europe’s top indoor sporting arena and I cannot understate how delighted that we are here. Welcome to Glasgow!

Although I was in last summer for the European Athletics Championships, I heard Billy Garrett nothing but praise for the Emirates Arena as the venue for the cycling events which were part Director of Sport and Events at Glasgow Life and of the inaugural multi-sport European Championships. Co-Chair of the Glasgow 2019 Steering Committee

The European Athletics Indoor Championships are the first major athletics event of the year and Glasgow will see many of the champions and medallists from Berlin in action as they set their sights on not only making the podium here but using this event as an important test ahead of this summer’s major competitions including the European Athletics Team Championships and the IAAF World Championships.

Consequently, taking all these factors into consideration, I am looking forward immensely to the three days of competition here in Glasgow.

On behalf of European Athletics, I am very grateful to British Athletics, the city of Glasgow and everyone else involved with the Local Organising Committee for all their hard work and commitment to the successful staging of this event.

THE EUROPEAN ATHLETICS INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS The European Athletics Indoor Championships Glasgow 2019 will be the 35th edition of the event. Glasgow will play host for the second time when the event returns to the city for the first time since 1990.

Glasgow will see over 600 athletes from 50 nations take to the tracks at the Emirates Arena for six session of action from 1st – 3rd March 2019.

The anticipated number of spectators is 18,000 over the three days.

Scottee the Scottie dog is the official mascot for the 2019 European Athletics Indoor Championships Glasgow 2019.

Around 200 enthusiastic children gave the biggest ‘Aww’ as Scottee was unveiled and welcomed to Crookston Castle Primary School. The excited Scottie dog made a dramatic entrance but was kept in check by well-known Scottish vet and Championship Ambassador, Laura Muir.

As Scottee burst in, Crookston Castle Primary School pupil, Rachel Joss couldn’t believe her eyes as she noticed her mascot design had been brought to life. Rachel won a competition for local schools in Glasgow to design the Glasgow 2019 Mascot and with over 700 entries, she came out on top spot.
