Dear Friends of the Road Show June 13, 2003 Please find our report covering Houston, TX through Charlotte, NC to follow. We have received numerous letters about the Road Show. Some are published below. Houston's SBE Chapter & SMPTE Section had a total of 30 interested persons attend our event. KUHT-TV's Director of Engineering & Operations, Marty Kirkland was again, for the second year, a most gracious host. Kirkland's crew was most helpful in setting up and striking the equipment. We will look forward to a return visit, one day. Everyone seemed to be very grateful for our program and departed with information and knowledge they would otherwise not have had. Most in attendance didn't make it to NAB, so we were that supplement that we set out to be. The expressions of gratitude in bringing the Road Show to Houston were very many. Really a great group of people. The winner of the Clark Wire & Cable BNC Coaxial Crimp tool for Houston is: William J. Cushman, Jr. of Widescreen Review. The winner of the DSC Labs Pocket size Test Pattern card for Houston is: Bill Anderson, Chief Engineer, KUHT-TV Houston PBS. An additional drawing was held for a Wohler Maglight and Pocketknife. The Maglight winner is Tim Giesler of Giesler Broadcasting Supply, Inc. The winner of the Pocketknife is Steve Chancellor of Fox Sports Net Got the following letter from Houston, TX I wanted to thank you for your effort in coming to Houston, I know how hard it must be to be on the road. Let me say that I really enjoyed your visit. My son was really impressed with the meeting at KUHT/Houston. It was a pleasure to meet you and I am interested in becoming a HAM. I would like some additional information on getting my Ham license. It was really is helpful to see the equipment which you brought. Many technical folks don't get the chance to go to the NAB and this is very helpful when you bring equipment for engineers to see. Kudos to you and keep up the good work. Soon you will see the application for my son come through, after all I think he also falls within the rules of working or being in broadcast television. (because his dad, has played in TV since the mid-70s) Thanks, Albert M. Flores Vice-Chairman SBE 105 MCP, CBNT & MANY HARD YEARS IN TV +++++++++++++ Although Lafayette, LA may have been our smallest turnout to date (ten), the quality of those in attendance is probably our very best. With one group chief present, representing stations in ten different markets and most of the technical staff of KATC-TV, we had a very intense and beneficial meeting. Everyone in attendance was involved in asking questions and discussing the potential use of the various technologies we brought at their facilities. There was considerable talk about the need for and the formation of a local SBE Chapter. This is the only meeting, to date, where a local station (the ABC affiliate) covered, on their 10 o'clock news, the fact that we were there doing an educational presentation for local area broadcast engineers. We were promised copies of the raw footage and an air check of what actually made it on air. We were invited several times to return next year. We were so involved from the moment we arrived that we only got a chance to take pictures of the crew that helped us pack up the van. The winner of the Clark Wire & Cable BNC Coaxial Crimp tool for Lafayette is: Jerome Jones, Technician at KATC-TV. The winner of the DSC Labs Pocket size Test Pattern card for Lafayette is: Jeremy Webre, News cameraman, at KATC-TV. An additional local drawing was held for a Wohler Maglight and Pocketknife. The Maglight winner is: Bill Rumsey, Assistant Chief Engineer at KATC-TV and the winner of the Pocketknife is: Pat O'Brien, Chief Engineer at KATC-TV Got the following letter from Lafayette, LA I just wanted to drop you a fast note to thank you and your sponsors for your visit here at KATC with your "Taste of NAB" Road Show. You know, out here in the small market TV trenches, we sometimes feel that the world is passing us by. Thanks to you, AJA Video, ESE, Evertz Systems, Quartz, Sundance Digital, Jampro, Wohler, Larcan, Leader, Fluke, Jensen Tools, Cooper Tools, Cark Wire & Cable, Sencore, Harris and DSC Labs we have been recognized and brought into the fold. Anybody can be a Broadcast Engineer with all the right assets available to him or her. What separates the good from the bad is how well we do without support, be it from our own company or from our vendors. You and you "friends" listed above have provided a support that I believe is invaluable to all engineers regardless of their market size but it's especially important to all those Paducah's, Lafayette's, and Bunkie TV engineers who don't have a large budget nor a staff. Thank you for the recognition and thank you for all the knowledge you imparted. You know, I was very well trained by some very, very good people. I remember Jack Cowart, then Chief of WCIX-TV6 in Miami. He told me one time that knowledge has no value whatsoever unless you can impart it to someone else. You sir, are THE practical demonstration of that statement. Thanks again and we all look forward to next years visit. Sincerely, Patrick O'Brien Chief Engineer KATC-TV3 [email protected] 337-235-3333 337-235-9363 FAX +++++++ Great facilities, great folks and a great time. The Tampa SBE chapter was out in numbers. We had 32 in attendance. It was good to see some of the same folks we saw last year and to meet so many new ones. The group seemed very interested in the technology we brought. The welcome mat was very much out the entire time and the help in setting up and striking the presentation is very much appreciated. WCLF and Professional Communications Systems provided lunch for this SBE meeting. The winner of the Clark Wire & Cable BNC Coaxial Crimp tool for Tampa is: Brian Reitmeyer, Systems Engineer for PAX-TV. The winner of the DSC Labs Pocket size ColorBar/Gray Scale Test Pattern card for Tampa is: Roz Clark, Director of Technical Operations for Cox Radio (he said he'd find a use for it.) An additional local drawing was held for a Wohler Maglight and Pocketknife. Maglight winner: Carl Berger, Chief Engineer - WCLF Channel 22, Pocketknife winner: Chris Skinner - Access Pinellas Got the following letter from Tampa, FL I enjoyed your presentation yesterday at WCLF 22. I learned a great deal about the products you presented, especially the products I represent. We had over 32 in attendance. We were able to take advantage of the facility's projectors. The Leader presentation was on center screen and the Jampro power point was on the two side screens. The meeting was preceded by dinner at a local restaurant and adjourned to the EOC. The group was sharp and very attentive. We were thanked over and over for bring this Road Show to West Palm Beach and invited to bring it back next year. Our EOC host, Heath Woodstock, was the greatest. We had the opportunity to see a very modern operation. Groups like these make the Road Show all worth it. This venue was selected when we couldn't get a firm answer from another location we'd been talking to. This choice was obviously a very good one and we'd like to return. We also appreciated the help before and after the presentation. The winner of the Clark Wire & Cable BNC Coaxial Crimp tool for West Palm Beach is: Louis Vaccaro, Maintenance Engineer at WPTV- TV5. The winner of the DSC Labs Pocket size ColorBar/Gray Scale Test Pattern card for West Palm Beach is: George Danner, Chief Engineer WPEC-TV12. An additional local drawing was held for a Wohler Maglight and Pocketknife. Maglight winner: Jim Johnson, Consulting Engineer and the Pocketknife winner: Randy Murdock, Chief Engineer WQCS-FM Got the following letters from West Palm Beach, FL I'd like to thank you for the most entertaining SBE meeting to come along in many a year. Your presentation moved and the sales pitch(s) flawless. I attend on average thirty SBE meetings a year in my position, this one will go down as the best.
