“Nicodemus Coming to ,” by Henry Ossawa Tanner, 1924-27 4th Sunday of Lent + March 14, 2021 PROCESSIONAL—“O Blessed Joseph” O blessed , how great was thy worth, The one chosen shadow of God upon earth, The father of ! — Ah, then, wilt thou be, Sweet spouse of our Lady! a father to me!

When the treasures of God were unsheltered on earth, Safekeeping was found for them both in thy worth; O father of Jesus, be father to me, Sweet spouse of our Lady! And I will love thee.

FIRST READING— 2 Chronicles 36:14-16, 19-23 In those days, all the princes of Judah, the priests, and the people added infidelity to infidelity, practicing all the abominations of the nations and polluting the LORD’s temple which he had consecrated in Jerusalem.

Early and often did the LORD, the God of their fathers, send his messengers to them, for he had compassion on his people and his dwelling place. But they mocked the messengers of God, despised his warnings, and scoffed at his prophets, until the anger of the LORD against his people was so inflamed that there was no remedy. Their enemies burnt the house of God, tore down the walls of Jerusalem, set all its palaces afire, and destroyed all its precious objects. Those who escaped the sword were carried captive to Babylon, where they became servants of the king of the Chaldeans and his sons until the kingdom of the Persians came to power. All this was to fulfill the word of the LORD spoken by Jeremiah: “Until the land has retrieved its lost sabbaths, during all the time it lies waste it shall have rest while seventy years are fulfilled.”

In the first year of Cyrus, king of Persia, in order to fulfill the word of the LORD spoken by Jeremiah, the LORD inspired King Cyrus of Persia to issue this proclamation throughout his kingdom, both by word of mouth and in writing: “Thus says Cyrus, king of Persia: All the kingdoms of the earth the LORD, the God of heaven, has given to me, and he has also Page Two | EVANGELION • Sunday, March 14, 2021 • greatgrouping.org charged me to build him a house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Whoever, therefore, among you belongs to any part of his people, let him go up, and may his God be with him!”

RESPONSORIAL—Psalm 137:1-2, 3, 4-5, 6 Response: Let my tongue be silenced, if I ever forget you! By the streams of Babylon we sat and wept when we remembered Zion. On the aspens of that land we hung up our harps. (R.) For there our captors asked of us the lyrics of our songs, and our despoilers urged us to be joyous: “Sing for us the songs of Zion!” (R.) How could we sing a song of the LORD in a foreign land? If I forget you, Jerusalem, may my right hand be forgotten! (R.) May my tongue cleave to my palate if I remember you not, if I place not Jerusalem ahead of my joy (R.) A-718331 Allrightsreserved. here is something about Pink Floyd’s Comfortably Numb that strikes a chord in my heart. The main character of the song is someone who is anaesthetised before coming onto the stage of life. We can all play the part on stage, numbing ourselves to who we are backstage.

*

No, I’m not saying you should light up and become “comfortably numb”... But what strikes me is an interior search to greet and say hello to that little child in all of us. Perhaps our greatest challenges in life are not played out on the stage of school, work and home but in the sanctuary of our conscience where our heart beats.

“Comfortably numb” is being enslaved in a world where... “...lips move but I can’t hear what you’re saying...” “I turned to look but it was gone...”

Page Four | EVANGELION • Sunday, March 14, 2021 • greatgrouping.org “The child is grown...” “The dream is gone...”

For me it’s living in a ”Groundhog Day” where hours turn to days, days to weeks, weeks to months— and now we are a year through “Corona Time,” just surviving in virtually-masked family, school, job, and religion.

No matter what makes us numb, Jesus Christ comes like he did to Lazarus to free us, to wake us up to the fullness of life. Saint Paul boldly says, after waking up from the numbness to Jesus, “For freedom Christ set us free.” Freely receiving Jesus’ mercy, Eucharist food, encouraging Word and gentle blessing-touch releases us from the numbness. We are at our best when we are not comfortably numb but comfortably in the embrace of our loving Savior Jesus.

In 2006, the British radio station Planet Rock asked listeners to vote for the most beautiful solo of all time. Comfortably Numb was the winner. Our beauty wins out when we invite Jesus into our numbness... although it is uncomfortable at first, the freedom one feels is so comfortably loved.

He wrote this letter toward the end of his life from prison in Rome to a very spiritually mature congregation. Tradition places and Mary in Ephesus as well as the evangelists and Paul’s protege Timothy. This explains in part why the letter presents a more advanced doctrine than his other letters, what some have called a mystagogical catechesis due to the the prevalence of mystery as a theme. The key takeaway here is that when reading from catechist Ephesians, get ready for something deep and mystical. column JASON GAWALDO The selection we read from the second Director of Faith Formation chapter focuses on how God moves us from [email protected] spiritual death into spiritual life. Page Eight | EVANGELION • Sunday, March 14, 2021 • greatgrouping.org Our St. Joseph’s Consecration journey with each other was beautifully enlightening, inspiring, comforting, and rewarding as a couple. As never before, we learned about St. Joseph and his role in our lives, because of his important place in Jesus’s life. Knowing St. Joseph gives us hope in the future of our Church since he has always guarded the Church as the earthly father of our Lord. Experiencing the St. Joseph’s Consecration together as a couple, alongside other couples, was deeply moving and we are so grateful to have shared this experience together. —Stacey & Chris Cuba

As a devotee of St. Joseph, I had already read much about him. But after reading Fr. Calloway’s Consecration To St. Joseph, I concluded that it is the most exhaustive treatise on St. Joseph ever written. Now that I understand in-depth the meaning of each of St. Joseph’s titles in the Litany, I am able to pray the Litany with greater veneration for him. The book made me understand why the Church teaches that it is all right to consecrate oneself to St. Joseph, just as it is perfectly all right to consecrate oneself to Mary. Jesus Himself did it, as Scripture tells us in Luke 2:51 “And he went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them.” —Tess Elliott ZOOM TUESDAYS 10:30-11:30 AM THURSDAYS 7:00-8:30 PM in-person + WEDNESDAYS 10:30-11:30 AM consecration THURSDAYS 7:00-8:30 PM Cost: $15 to
