Master of Music (Theory), August, 1995, 86 pp., 22 examples, 5 figures, bibliography, 122 titles. This thesis presents an analysis of Copland's first major serial work, the Quartet for Piano and Strings (1950), using pitch-class set theory and tonal analytical techniques. The first chapter introduces Copland's Piano Quartet in its historical context and considers major influences on his compositional development. The second chapter takes up a pitch-class set approach to the work, emphasizing the role played by the eleven-tone row in determining salient pc sets. Chapter Three re-examines many of these same passages from the viewpoint of tonal referentiality, considering how Copland is able to evoke tonal gestures within a structural context governed by pc-set relationships. The fourth chapter will reflect on the dialectic that is played out in this work between pc-sets and tonal elements, and considers the strengths and weaknesses of various analytical approaches to the work. -

BUSONI) Relatively early in his career, Bach worked in Weimar as the court organist. While serving in this capacity, he produced his Orgelbüchlein (little organ book): a collection of 46 chorale preludes. Each piece borrows a Lutheran hymn tune, set in long notes against a freer backdrop. “Ich ruf’ zu dir,” a general prayer for God’s grace, takes a particularly plaintive approach. The melody is presented with light ornamentation in the right hand, a flowing middle voice is carried by the left, and the organ’s pedals offer a steady walking bassline. The work is further colored by Bach’s uncommon choice of key, F Minor, which he tended to reserve for more wrought contrapuntal works. In this context, though, it lends a warmth to the original text’s supplication. In arranging the work for piano, around the year 1900, Busoni’s main challenge was to condense the original three-limbed texture to two. Not only did he manage to do this, while preserving the original pitches almost exactly, he found a way to imitate the organ’s timbral fullness. -

Doctor of Musical Arts (Performance), December, 1995, 143 pp., 14 examples, 3 appendices, bibliography, 29 titles. The purpose of this dissertation is to prepare and present a critical edition of Carl Nielsen's Quintet fbr Winds, Op. 43, a major work in the woodwind quintet repertoire. Written for the Copenhagen Wind Quintet in 1922, it is also considered a pivotal composition in Nielsen's artistic output. The only published edition of this piece, by Edition Wilhelm Hansen, is rife with errors, a consistent problem with many of Nielsen's compositions. -

The Vienna Piano Trio (March 9) by Nicholas Jones
Rocky River Chamber Music Society: The Vienna Piano Trio (March 9) by Nicholas Jones The Vienna Piano Trio’s program at West Shore Unitarian seemed traditional at first glance, but looks are deceptive. This well- respected group (now 25 years old, though with some changes of personnel over the years) specializes in the familiar classical repertoire of Austria and Germany, and last night was no exception — Beethoven, Brahms, and Schoenberg. But both the performances and the pieces themselves were full of surprises. Beethoven was represented by the quirky “Kakadu” variations. It took a Beethoven to make the slightest of material — a trivial popular song (“I am the tailor Cockatoo”) — into a technically demanding set of variations. Full of the composer’s typical contrasts, these variations provided excellent ground for musical acrobatics by these very accomplished instrumentalists — pianist Stefan Mendl, cellist Matthias Gredler, and (the newest member of the group) violinist Bogdan Božović. The Vienna players made the most of opportunities for excitement: all froth at one moment, and Sturm und Drang the next! But the surprises went further than mere showmanship: Beethoven bookended his show-off variations with significantly more profound writing — a beautiful extended Adagio at the start, and a matching variation near the end — and the performers took us into that seriousness as well as the fun. The Vienna Trio painted its sound with rich, contrasting colors, booming with Beethovenian ferocity when called for, and then, in an instant, pulling back to the kind of delicate intensity that stimulates the ear even more than volume. Playing with flexibility and panache, they brought to the music the kind of togetherness that comes from being a dedicated ensemble, not just an ad hoc collection of three excellent musicians. -
Spohr and Schumann
SPOHR AND SCHUMANN by Keith Warsop OR MOST PEOPLE the link between Louis Spohr and Robert Schumann is limited to the latter's negative criticism of the Historrcai Symphony. In fact, the two musicians had a high regard for each other's compositions even though they each sometimes had reservations about particular aspects of certain individual works. Unfortunately, Spohr broke off his memoirs when he reached June 1838 shortly before he and Schumann met for the first time so we do not have his considered thoughts about Schumann's music in general. However, in the section of the memoirs added by his second wife, Marianne, after Spohr's death, she records that after the stay in Carlsbad detailed by Spohr in the last paragraphs he wrote down himself, they stopped in Leipzig on their way home. There, Marianne continues, "it was a source of great pleasure to him to make the long-desired acquaintance of Robert Schumann who, though in other respects exceedingly quiet and reserved, yet evinced his admiration of Spohr with great warmth and gratified him by the performanee of several of his interesting fantasias. " The two composers had, however, been in touch a few months before through the agency of a third composer, Felix Mendelssohn. On 24th November 1836, Mendelssohn wrote to Spohr requesting a song for inclusion in the wedding album of his new bride, Cdcilie Jeanrenaud, and on l3th December wrote again to thank Spohr for the song 'Was mir wohl tibrig bliebe', WoO96 (later included by Spohr as No.5 of his Op.139 Lieder collection). -
HOW to FIND RELATIVE MINOR and MAJOR SCALES Relative
HOW TO FIND RELATIVE MINOR AND MAJOR SCALES Relative minor and major scales share all the same notes–each one just has a different tonic. The best example of this is the relative relationship between C-major and A-minor. These two scales have a relative relationship and therefore share all the same notes. C-major: C D E F G A B C A-minor: A B C D E F G A Finding the relative minor from a known major scale (using the 6th scale degree) scale degrees: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 1 C-major: C D E F G A B C A-(natural) minor: A B C D E F G A A-minor starts on the 6th scale degree of C-major. This relationship holds true for ALL major and minor scale relative relationships. To find the relative minor scale from a given major scale, count up six scale degrees in the major scale–that is where the relative minor scale begins. This minor scale will be the natural minor mode. 1 2 3 4 5 6 C-D-E-F-G-A The relative minor scale can also be found by counting backwards (down) by three scale degrees in the major scale. C-major: C D E F G A B C ←←← count DOWN three scale degrees and arrive at A 1 2 3 C-B-A Finding the relative major from a known minor scale (using the 3rd scale degree) scale degrees: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 1 A-(natural) minor: A B C D E F G A C-major: C D E F G A B C C-major starts on the 3rd scale of A-minor.
