LLYNETTE WWOODARD

Arguably the greatest women’s player of all time, has remained a constant force within the game she elevated and is emerging as a person of influence in the competitive financial services arena.

Recently celebrated as 2005 Kansan of the Year, Lynette last year relocated to her native Wichita where she is a financial consultant with the investment services firm AG Edwards. This is for Lynette the continuation of a career she has nurtured on a parallel track with basketball pursuits. Through much of the 1990s she worked for a New York investment house, Magna Securities, and was the firm’s vice president of marketing upon her departure in 1998. On her way to receiving an array of basketball awards, Lynette also paved a groundbreaking trail for women’s sports. Her impressive achievements include collecting a gold medal in the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, earning acclaim as the first female Harlem Globetrotter, and accepting membership among legends in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2004. Lynette attended and became a living legend at the where she was a four-time all-America choice. A nationally ranked scorer, defender and rebounder, Lynette won the awarded to the best basketball player in the nation in 1981, and finished her collegiate career as the most prolific scorer in the game’s history with 3,649 points. In 1984, Lynette captained the U.S. women’s basketball team to gold in the Olympics. She continued her basketball odyssey by making history as a Globetrotter in 1985. Her skills also have fans in Italy and Japan, where Lynette played in professional leagues for numerous seasons. After leaving her mark on KU and the American collegiate record book, Lynette starred in Italy, where one of her teams captured the league title in 1989. Among the most decorated female athletes in sports history, Lynette was inducted into the National High School Hall of Fame, the Women’s Sports Hall of Fame, the Black Legends Professional Hall of Fame, and, ultimately, the Naismith hall. In 1997, basketball called again. With the birth of the professional WNBA, Lynette came out of playing retirement to join the roster of the Rockers after the team selected her in an elite draft. She played a second WNBA season in 1998 with the and also that year returned to her alma mater to accept a community and alumni relations post. Lynette was named KU assistant women’s basketball coach in 1999, a position she held through part of 2003-04 before taking over as interim head coach in January 2004 until season’s end. Her coaching aspirations now are on hold as Lynette pursues a new life chapter in the investment community.
