Between 1997 and 2008 they competed in the competition for 11 successive years. • They won on their last visit to Germany for a European fixture – 3-1 at SV Werder Bremen in the 2007/08 group stage – but prior to that had lost all three away games without scoring a goal, conceding six in the process. • In their last participation two years ago, the Greek champions finished second in their group, three points behind Arsenal. On their travels they failed to score a single goal, going down 2-0 at both Arsenal and R. Standard de Liège before a 0-0 stalemate at AZ Alkmaar. In the knockout rounds, they lost 1-0 to FC Girondins de Bordeaux in Athens and 2-1 away. Borussia Dortmund: Jürgen Klopp Date of birth: 16 June 1967 Nationality: German Playing career: SV Glatten, TuS Ergenzingen, 1. FC Pforzheim, , Viktoria Sindlingen, Rot-Weiss Frankfurt, 1. FSV Mainz 05 Coaching career: 1. FSV Mainz 05, Borussia Dortmund • Having spent his early career in the lower leagues and failed to break into Eintracht's first team, Klopp turned professional with Mainz, starting off a striker but becoming a no-nonsense defender. Never played in the top flight but made 325 second-division appearances from 1990 to 2001, setting a club record, as well as scoring 52 goals. • 'Kloppo', as he is known in Germany, was appointed Mainz's caretaker coach on 28 February 2001, helping the club avoid relegation to the third tier. • Duly won a permanent contract and over the next few years built Mainz into one of the strongest clubs in the 2. Bundesliga; narrowly missed out on promotion in 2002 and 2003, Mainz losing out to Eintracht by a single goal in the latter campaign. • Finally took Mainz into the top flight for the first time in 2004 and kept them in the Bundesliga until 2007, taking them into the 2005/06 UEFA Cup via the UEFA Fair Play ranking – they lost to eventual winners Sevilla FC in the first round. • After another near miss for promotion in 2007/08 Klopp – whose enthusiasm and passion, plus his stint as a TV pundit, have made him popular all over Germany – left for Dortmund. Took them to sixth in his first season, led them into the UEFA Europa League in the following campaign and then, with a squad packed with exciting young talent, oversaw their first league title win since 2002 in 2010/11.

Olympiacos FC: Ernesto Valverde Date of birth: 9 February 1964 Nationality: Spanish Playing career: Deportivo Alavés, RCD Espanyol, FC Barcelona, Athletic Club, RCD Mallorca Coaching career: Athletic Club, RCD Espanyol, Olympiacos FC (twice), Villarreal CF • Known as Txingurri – or 'worker ant' – as a player, former striker Valverde scored 44 goals in 170 appearances over a six-year stay with Athletic. Had previously helped Espanyol to a third-place Liga finish in 1987 and an appearance in the following season's UEFA Cup final, which they lost on penalties to Bayer 04 Leverkusen. • Began his coaching career in Athletic's youth ranks before stepping up to handle first-team affairs with the Basque club in 2003/04; guided Los Leones to UEFA Cup qualification in his first term in charge. • Valverde again found himself losing a UEFA Cup final on penalties in 2007 – this time as coach of Espanyol – with Liga rivals Sevilla FC emerging victorious in Glasgow. • In his first season outside of Spain, led Olympiacos to a domestic league and cup double in 2008/09 before signing a one-year contract with Villarreal in June 2009, but was sacked the following January with the Yellow Submarine tenth in the table. • Rejoined Olympiacos on a two-year contract in August 2010, winning another league title at the end of his first campaign back.

UEFA Champions League: Group stage milestones • Holders FC Barcelona are bidding to avoid becoming the first defending champions to fail to get through a group stage since the UEFA Champions League began. (This record, like the others, includes the seasons between 1999/2000 and 2002/03 that featured a second group stage). • In 1992/93, Barcelona were the reigning European Champion Clubs' Cup holders and were beaten 4-3 on aggregate in the second round by PFC CSKA Moskva. • No team has successfully defended the UEFA Champions League trophy with AC Milan (1989, 1990) the last club to win consecutive European Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), AFC Ajax (1995, 1996), Juventus (1996, 1997) and Manchester United (2008, 2009) have all returned to the UEFA Champions League final as holders only to lose. • S.S. Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta became the oldest player to compete in the UEFA Champions League in 2007/08 when he featured against Olympiacos FC on matchday one at the age of 43 years and 168 days. The record was previously held by Alessandro Costacurta, the AC Milan defender who played against AEK Athens FC in 2006/07 at the age of 40 years and 211 days. Ballotta was aged 43 years 252 days when he featured against Real Madrid CF on matchday six. • Ryan Giggs is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 37 years and 289 days, in Manchester United's 1-1 draw at SL Benfica on 14 September 2011. • Celestine Babayaro is the youngest player to have appeared in the UEFA Champions League. He was 16 years and 87 days when he started for RSC Anderlecht against FC Steaua Bucureşti on 23 November 1994. He was then sent off in the 37th minute. • Peter Ofori-Quaye is the youngest player to have scored in the UEFA Champions League, aged 17 years and 195 days. He found the net in Olympiacos's 5-1 defeat at Rosenborg BK on 1 October 1997. • Barcelona and Manchester United FC have both finished as group winners on 12 occasions, one more than Real Madrid. • Four teams have recorded six successive victories in a UEFA Champions League group stage: Milan (1992/93), Paris Saint-Germain FC (1994/95), FC Spartak Moskva (1995/96) and Barcelona (2002/03, first group stage). • Twelve teams have gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without picking up a single point, including MŠK Žilina and FK Partizan in 2010/11. The other ten are: Maccabi Haifa FC and Debreceni VSC (2009/10), FC Dynamo Kyiv (2007/08), PFC Levski Sofia (2006/07), SK Rapid Wien (2005/06), Anderlecht (2004/05), Spartak Moskva and Bayer 04 Leverkusen (2002/03, first and second group stage respectively), Fenerbahçe SK (2001/02, first group stage) and 1. FC Košice (1997/98). • Manchester United scored 20 goals in the 1998/99 group stage, more than any other side has managed. Barcelona scored 19 times in the 1999/2000 first group stage. • MŠK Žilina conceded 19 goals in their six outings in 2010/11, equalling the record let in during a group stage set by Debrecen (2009/10), Dynamo Kyiv (2007/08) and Ferencvárosi TC in 1995/96. • No team has ever gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without conceding a goal. Milan (1992/93), AFC Ajax (1995/96), Juventus (1996/97 and 2004/05), Chelsea FC (2005/06), Liverpool FC (2005/06), Villarreal CF (2005/06) and Manchester United (2010/11) all let in just one. • Before their 3-1 win against Sporting Clube de Portugal on matchday six of the 2006/07 campaign, Spartak Moskva went 22 games without a victory in the competition, surpassing the unwanted record set by AEK Athens FC on matchday three of the same campaign. • The lowest total for a team qualifying from the group stage is seven points. The first to do it, since three points for a win was introduced in 1995/96, were Legia Warszawa that same season before FC Dynamo Kyiv and Bayer 04 Leverkusen managed it in 1999/2000 and Liverpool in 2001/02. FC Lokomotiv Moskva and eventual finalists Juventus both progressed with seven points in 2002/03, a feat achieved by Rangers FC and SV Werder Bremen in 2005/06.
