FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

The first of its kind, the program brings together one of the world's best-known football clubs and one of the world's best modern universities. Kiama High School students have participated in workshops this week and Ms Kerrie Powell (Deputy Principal) and I were invited to attend the dinner launching the program. This is certainly a world class initiative on our doorstep.

Students who participate will undertake 16 - 20 hours of football training each week - around academic study - and will have opportunities for selection to compete at a local, national and international level. Applications for 2020 open today, 29 March 2019.

The UOW Tottenham Hotspur Global Football Program will kick off in February 2020 and offer students a unique opportunity to study a qualification of their choice at UOW's Wollongong campus, while also developing their football skills with training provided by fully qualified coaches from English Premier League (EPL) club Tottenham Hotspur.

HARMONY WEEK Many of these children have lost both parents to the ravages of AIDS and would otherwise be living on the streets or in dire circumstances.

The concert was inspiring for our students as they learned more about Uganda and the obstacles that many people face in order to gain an education. Money raised from this event will go towards building a new classroom 100% hOPE village in Mityana, Uganda. Currently there are classrooms up to Year 3 and the plan is to build a Year 4 classroom. If any family wishes to make a donation to this worthy cause you can pay the front office.

Harmony Week was celebrated in fine style with a visit from the 100% hOPE, Ugandan Choir. This group of talented performers showcased their skills of dancing, singing and drumming and in the performance called upon staff and students to learn some new skills.

100% hOPE was founded in 2011 by Gold Coast teacher Trishelle Sayuuni. It is an Aussie charity that partners with the local Ugandan community to provide education and support for children facing profound hardship.

SPORTING NEWS This year every effort has been made to move the event to the morning, however, due to factors out of control it will remain an afternoon event. For this reason students should come to school prepared for the event with hat, water bottle, suitable footwear. Sunscreen will be available before the start of the event from CROSS COUNTRY teachers situated at Bonaira Oval.

There will be no normal school sport (including morning surfing) for Years 7, 8, 9 Mr N Ford, Sports Organiser &10 on Wednesday 10 April, due to the annual Cross Country taking place in Periods 4, 5 & 6. It is compulsory for all students in Years 7, 8, 9 & 10 to walk or run OPEN GIRLS SOCCER TEAM in their respective age groups (age he/she turns this year). Years 7-10 have been preparing for the Cross Country in PE lessons for the past 5 weeks, running various terrains. This year it is also compulsory for all year 11 and 12 students to participate in the afternoon.

On Wednesday, Years 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 & 12 students must walk to Bonaira Street fields at the end of Recess, upon arriving students should be seated in roll call lines. Students should check the course map in the Science Quad windows. Basically the course follows the walking path from Kendall’s Beach, along past Surf Beach and around the Showground then up to near the Lighthouse. The return route follows the same path to the finish line at Kendall’s Beach. We ask that students stay to the left of the path to allow the public to access the footpath, and also to let the runners go by. On completion of the race, each student will receive a ticket to take to the recording table, which will confirm their participation and result.

Staff will be on the course at regular checkpoints to supervise, help and support the students during their race. If a student is not feeling well they should inform a staff member immediately.

If a student is injured or sick on Wednesday they must bring a note to Mr Ford in M4 at the start of lunch. These students may be asked to help with setting up or recording results.

The top 10 place getters from each age group will represent Kiama High School at the Zone Championships at "Willandra" in Week 2 next term. Students that place in the top 10 will be given a note which will need to be returned to the top of M block as soon as possible.
