    THE OFFICE OF THE QUEENS BOROUGH PRESIDENT Strategic Policy Statement 2014 Melinda Katz Queens Borough President The Borough of Queens is home to more than 2.3 million residents, representing more than 120 countries and speaking more than 135 languages1. The seamless knit that ties these distinct cultures and transforms them into shared communities is what defines the character of Queens. The Borough’s diverse population continues to steadily grow. Foreign-born residents now represent 48% of the Borough’s population2. Traditional immigrant gateways like Sunnyside, Woodside, Jackson Heights, Elmhurst, Corona, and Flushing are now communities with the highest foreign-born population in the entire city3. Immigrant and Intercultural Services The immigrant population remains largely underserved. This is primarily due to linguistic and cultural barriers. Residents with limited English proficiency now represent 28% of the Borough4, indicating a need for a wide range of social service support and language access to City services. All services should be available in multiple languages, and outreach should be improved so that culturally sensitive programming can be made available. The Borough President is actively working with the Queens General Assembly, a working group organized by the Office of the Queens Borough President, to address many of these issues. Cultural Queens is amidst a cultural transformation. The Borough is home to some of the most iconic buildings and structures in the world, including the globally recognized Unisphere and New York State Pavilion. Areas like Astoria and Long Island City are establishing themselves as major cultural hubs. In early 2014, the New York City Council designated the area surrounding Kaufman Astoria Studios as the city’s first arts district through a City Council Proclamation The areas unique mix of adaptively reused residential, commercial, and manufacturing buildings serve as a catalyst for growth in culture and the arts.

A l'instar du biopic Imitation Game qui a permis au grand public de découvrir les travaux du mathématicien Alan Turing, The Lost City of Z met en lumière et en images la vie de Percy Fawcett, explorateur britannique du début du 20e siècle. Et quelle lumière ! Quelles images ! Certains plans s'apparentent à de véritables tableaux, et l'esthétique du film enveloppe le spectateur de l'atmosphère mystérieuse et moite, pleine de promesses et de dangers, de la forêt amazonienne. De faux airs d'Apocalypse Now, sans colonel Kurtz, dans un décor tout aussi majestueux. Casting impeccable avec un Robert Pattinson méconnaissable et un Charlie Hunnam qui n'est pas sans nous évoquer Brad Pitt (par ailleurs producteur du film) au début des années 1990. Voici un film qui nous rappelle, à l'heure du GPS et du vivre ensemble, qu'il y a seulement un siècle les ''sauvages'' n'étaient pas considérés comme des êtres humains et les frontières de certains pays d'Amérique du Sud n'étaient pas encore cartographiées. MAJOR PROGRAMS AND FILM SERIES Martin Scorsese Retrospective THROUGH SUNDAY, APRIL 23, 2017 The final section of the Museum’s comprehensive retrospective, presented in conjunction with the major gallery exhibition Martin Scorsese, includes documentaries by Scorsese about film history (A Personal Journey with Martin Scorsese through American Movies,1995; My Voyage to Italy,1999), a portrait of his Italian-American heritage (Italianamerican, 1974), and several films he acted in—playing Vincent Van Gogh in Akira Kurosawa’s Dreams (1990) and a puffer fish in Dreamworks Animations’ Shark Tale (2004). In addition, the Museum presents encore screenings, most in 35mm, of Mean Streets (1973), Taxi Driver (1976), Goodfellas (1990), Kundun (1997), Silence (2016) with cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto and screenwriter Jay Cocks in person, a very rare theatrical presentation of Scorsese’s Bob Dylan documentary No Direction Home (2007), and a beautiful 35mm print of The Last Waltz (1978). A selection of films restored through support from The Film Foundation, a non-profit organization for film preservation and restoration founded and chaired by Scorsese, concludes with a program of avant-garde films (Ken Jacobs’s Blonde Cobra, 1963; Kenneth Anger’s Rabbit’s Moon, 1950–72; Shirley and Wendy Clarke’s Butterfly, 1967, among them), The Red Shoes (1948), and The Color of Pomegranates (1969) (all on April 9).     Ad Astra 2019 There have been numerous sci-fi films about people who had to go to the reaches of space to find truths within themselves but none quite like James Gray’s masterful “Ad Astra.” Thematically dense and visually sumptuous, “Ad Astra” may not work for those seeking an action/adventure thrill ride—it’s more “Solaris” than “Gravity” or “The Martian”—but it works wonders below the surface, serving as an examination of masculinity, a commentary on how we become our fathers, and can even be read as a search for an absent God. This is rare, nuanced storytelling, anchored by one of Brad Pitt’s career-best performances and remarkable technical elements on every level. It’s a special film. Roy McBride (Pitt) is the coolest man in a spacesuit. In the near future, when space travel is more prevalent, McBride is legendary as someone whose BPM never rises above 80, even when he’s plummeting to Earth as he does in an early scene. The cause for that heavenly dive from a tower that reaches from the ground into space is a power surge that devastates the entire planet, killing thousands of people. The suits in charge of space exploration inform McBride that they have traced the source of the surge back to an anti-matter device stationed near Neptune, which just happens to be the last place anyone heard from a famous mission called The Lima Project. The objective for them was to go to the furthest reach of our solar system and look around at the rest of the universe, trying to find intelligent life.

Perhaps. By Terence Cullen “Buy land, AJ, ‘cause God ain’t making any more of it.” That paternal advice passed on from father to son during an episode of The Sopranos nearly 15 years ago has taken on a whole deeper meaning in New York City these days. So precious has land become—driving up both commercial and residential rents—that developers have been left to create land where there was none before. For centuries, master builders both in the government and the private sector have aimed to do that at Sunnyside Yards in western Queens. The nearly 200-acre parcel of land has for more than a century been a literal hole in the ground that touches Long Island City, Astoria, Sunnyside and Woodside. While these neighborhoods have seen a rash of development in the last 20 years, the 117-year-old rail yard has sat where it was without experiencing the same kind of love. That could be until now. A long-awaited feasibility study released by the city’s economic development wing last week indicated that it would in fact be possible to build a platform or, in industry speak, deck, over Sunnyside Yards. The conclusion of the study means that Mayor Bill de Blasio’s plan to build a whole new residential complex could move forward—setting up what’s sure to be a spirited debate between the various stakeholders in the process.
