Penlee Cluster of Churches charity number 1180956 Newsletter for February 2020

Bishop’s visit to Penlee Cluster area Bishop Philip will be joining us for the day on Wednesday March 4th. We are expecting him to be with us for most of that day and to join in the usual activities of the cluster. Amongst other activities he will be joining the Reader group, visiting a primary school, looking at the fishing industry and joining the Wednesday wisdom of the community meal. The focus of his visit will very much be on Lay ministry....how people are living out their faith in daily lives. He will then be worshipping with us on Sunday March 15th: 1030 Eucharist at St Marys church PZ. He will preach at that service and his theme will be “the Barnabas church”. We are expecting to have a joint cluster choir to help lead that act of worship (Nigel Guzavk invites singers from all four churches to join come to rehearse ....watch out for rehearsal dates ) There will be a Cluster Sunday lunch following that service at the Lugger...a time to meet together and to informally chat to Bp Philip. Do sign up for Sunday lunch.

The torrential rain stopped and we were blessed by bright sun- shine for our first ever campfire reflections at Paul Quiet Gar- den on Saturday morning. It was so sunny we didn’t need to put up our new 5 metre Bell tent with wood burning stove that will be saved for our next one. 19 people came and one dog called Mimi. We enjoyed a good social, having a cuppa, cake and chats around the campfire. We also learnt various ways to light a fire and also cooked a lovely carrot and coriander soup, which was a great group effort to get it cooked in time and it took some experimenting to see at what height the pot needed to be to get the soup cooked. (Next time we will put it on earlier!). Many of the people also enjoyed walking round the quiet garden reflecting and also looking at the beau- tiful view. We finished off things having a lunch together enjoying the soup we made around the camp- fire. Everyone agreed that it had been a great day and that they all felt relaxed and in a good mood, obviously the sun- shine and good company helped! Thank you to everyone that came and helped and to those that donated wood and cake. The next one will be at the Vic- arage 24 Chapel St Penzance, Near St Mary’s on the 1st Febru- ary 3pm to 5pm (1st Sat of the month). Then we will be back to Paul Quiet Garden every 3rd Sat of the Month from 10.30 to 12.30. Any Donations appreciated with wood and cake and we can always do with volunteers to get involved and help out. If you want more info call Jim Brown 07970 994132

Paul Bell-ringers’ Quarter peel

Our Christmas Quarter Peal was rung on the 27th of December. What made it special was that it was the first Quarter that I was to conduct. The ringers apart from myself were, Mick, Miranda Penhalligan , Claire Sowden, Sam Nankervis, and Alistair Hopkins. Sam helped me get started, then let me get on with it. For the record we did 1260 Plain bob doubles in just under 50 minutes. All things being equal the next one will be for my 60th birthday in February. John Swan. This week we made and flew Vicky's 'doves' and acted out the story of Jesus being baptised in the river Jordan. There is always lots happening at the Voyage of Discovery group in term-time on Thursdays after school at St Mary's Church from 3:30pm - 5:00pm, children and families are most welcome. Join in with Alex's weekly treasure hunt for his hidden Golden Chocolate Coins or learn to make your own food with Penny & Lynn in the brand new kitchen - there is always fun for everyone! Join with our other 'voyagers' to discover the Gospel message of Jesus together through craft, music, drama, song and food - perhaps you have an idea for an activity that we could do together? We are delighted to welcome Debra and Lynn to our team. Debra has already shared her excellent 'Blue Peter' style craft skills with an innovative sticky-backed jigsaw puzzle and having been a hit with her hot-dogs this week, Lynn has teamed up with Penny to plan and feed our hungry 'voyagers', mums, dads and colleagues!

It is with a sense of sadness we share the news that one of our founding leaders, Mike Ellis, recently died. Mike was a man of great faith and was much loved and inspirational to all our young people and colleagues. He will be greatly missed and our love, thoughts and prayers continue to be with you Penny. If you'd like more information about joining us or supporting the group in any way at all, please do drop us an email and we'd be delighted to hear from you and try to answer any questions you may have: [email protected]

Many thanks, Alex F, Alex N, Debra, Jason, Lynn, Penny, Vicky & The Team

Wisdom in the community Wisdom in the community readings 2nd : Candlemas : Luke 2: 22-40 9th: Matthew 5: 13-20 16th: Matthew 6: 25-end 23rd : Matthew 17: 1-9 March 1st : Matthew 4: 1-11

Have you thought about joining one of the “wisdom in the community” groups? It’s a really good way to not only think and pray through the Gospel reading that is used on a Sunday but, in the company and friendship of others, to think about how the Gospel can radically change our lives. The next is to be the Revd .

Hugh is currently the priest of St Mary’s, Goudhurst and Christ Church, Kilndown (known as GK Church), in Canterbury Diocese. Prior to his ordination in 2009, Hugh was Director of L’Arche London, a Christian community in which people with and without learning disabilities live together and support one another. Overseeing growth; pioneering initiatives As well as overseeing significant growth in his parish churches, Hugh has pioneered new initiatives in Kent, including a school of theology and a ground-breaking partnership between schools, local churches and a Christian charity to provide counselling to children and support to families. Hugh chaired the team that developed Canterbury Diocese’s strategy, and works on the national initiatives, Setting God’s People Free and Growing Faith. Passionate concern Hugh brings to the Diocese of and the College of Bishops a passionate concern for people with learning disabilities; for children, young people and families, particularly those struggling with mental health issues; a deep commitment to ecumenism; first-hand knowledge of the joys and challenges of growing the rural church; and a deep passion to see all people, young and old, in every community, know the life- changing impact of knowing the love of God in Jesus. He is married to Lizzie, UK director of international peace- building NGO Search for Common Ground, and they have four children. Hugh said: “I am honoured and delighted to have been appointed as the new Bishop of St Germans. ‘My joy and privilege’ “The Christian faith has deep roots in Cornwall, and it will be my joy and privilege as bishop to enable those strong roots to continue to bear fruit today and in the future. “I look forward to working with all my brothers and sisters in Christ, lay and ordained, in church communities across the diocese, as we live out the hope and love that Jesus has for Cornwall and all its people.” Welcoming his appointment, the , the Rt Revd said: “I’m delighted to welcome Hugh here as bishop-designate of St Germans and we greatly look forward to Hugh, Lizzie and their family joining us later this year. “Hugh has a significant track record of church growth in a rural context; of launching fresh initiatives in mission and ministry, as well as experience of developing strategy at a diocesan level. “Additionally, he has been deeply shaped by several years working at L’Arche, an intentional Christian community centred around people with profound learning disabilities. ‘Deep and joyful call to Cornwall’ “He speaks of a deep and joyful sense of call to join us in Cornwall. I’m just delighted by his appointment and look forward so much to him joining us here in our adventure of Discovering God’s Kingdom; Growing the Church.” Hugh and his family will move to live in the in April. He will be consecrated as a bishop in June, after which he will be formally welcomed to the diocese and will take up his seat in . TEN PLEDGES - PLEDGE NUMBER 3 “I PLEDGE TO EDUCATE MYSELF ABOUT THE SCIENCE AND IMPACT OF CLIMATE CHANGE”

Each month we take a look at one of the pledges in the Ten Pledges Challenge and for January we are asking people to commit to find out the truth on Climate Change and the impact it will have on future generations it we don’t act fast enough. So if you are looking for a New Years Resolution this could be a good one. Perhaps now is the time to start planning to maximise the use of a number of resources and aids that are being promoted for Lent which begins at the end of February. The issue of Climate Change and our response as churches and as followers of Christ is now a high priority. I am writing to commend to you a number of resources that you might find useful as you prepare for the keeping of Lent or at another time of year

Christmas Cards Thank you to all those people who bought one of our Paul Christmas cards in support of our bid for glory with Green Church Kernow. After 'making' costs we raised nearly £120 which will be donated to Cool Earth, an international environmental charity with a base in Falmouth. Church Buildings - keeping people in the picture At long last, following the arson attach at St Marys church PZ, new doors have been made and are now installed. We will then be trialling a new locking system...an electronic fob system instead of keys. We hope that this will be more convenient for all who use the church building during the week and for groups who need occasional access to the building. The system will record which fobs are being used and who is in that building. Any fob that is lost can then be deactivated.....which should mean that we do not have to change locks if someone loses their key!

St. John’s church now has a new outside ramp allowing easier access to people find steps difficult. They are also half way through installing LED lights throughout the church....if you want to donate money towards this project contact Church warden Brian. Grant applications are now being submitted for the much-needed new toilet project.

The old St Pauls altar has now been moved from St Johns church to St Peters Newlyn. Faculty application has now been sort for the removal of the organ at St Peters Contemplative Prayer at St John’s, Penzance Monday February 24th at 7.30pm ALL ARE WELCOME

In God’s Garden

Daylight hours are noticeably lengthening and the garden birds are getting restless. Last year’s newbies are looking for somewhere to nest in competi- tion with more experienced adults. Look no further my feathered friends. In Paul Quiet Garden there are several new affordable houses. Vacant pos- session, deceptively spacious, sensitively coloured to blend in, one narrow, secure, main entrance and branch parking close by. Lovely aspect with views over Mount’s Bay. Leasehold for a year but bring your own bedding. Nothing in the area as ‘cheep’ as this! Nigel

Come and grow your creative spirit in the Quiet Garden As Lent draws towards its inevitable end point of Jesus on the cross we can meet on Saturday the 21st March in Paul Quiet Garden from 10.30 onwards. It is an opportunity for quiet reflection about the cross and our impact on the earth. If you wish you can take the opportunity to express our thoughts, hopes and prayers in the practical form of creative art and craft. We will be weather proof in the large bell tent and we will be warmed by the wood burning stove. Soup and baked potatoes as well! More details in the March issue of this newsletter.

Chill out...each Friday St. John’s: 3.30- 5.30pm Each Friday during term time we hold a chill out session at our Playzone in St. John’s. Lots of people come: young children from and St Marys school are bused in, parents/ carers and children, teenagers come to help out and also meet up with friends. We play, we chat, we eat food together. Last week there were over 70 people in the building. We are looking for volunteers who might come along and help out.....chatting to children or parents, making drinks, serving food.....there are usually quite a few adults supervising....but extra help is always welcome. Could all those collecting for the Children's Society please bring their boxes to church or let me have them during February. Many thanks. David Carpenter

Oral History Project Meet Up Our next meet up will be Wednesday 5th February 2pm in the upstairs room in the village hall. We will be reviewing the very wonderful Winter Story Night event and planning our next event in Spring. We will also be discussing collecting new oral histories so if anyone would like to try interviewing we can provide training. No experience necessary. All welcome.

Winter Story Night - Paul Oral History Group Thankyou to all who turned out for mulled wine, memories and stories at Paul Church on January 5th; and a special thanks to our guests: writer and storyteller Liz Harman, and Boilerhouse (Mike, Mikey, Rick, Dave and Luke)who shared some seasonal songs with their inimitable style.

The night got off to a cracking start from John Philpotts as he told the story of his late night journey home across the fields when he and his friends saw ghostly green lights in the sky. A proper job ghost story for a winter night as John recounted his experience of seeing the Northern Lights from Paul in 1949. Of course his tale reminded others of their own experiences of the same night. Liz’s story about the Christmas Pudding got everyone talking about the days of the public bakehouse, and how the Sunday meal might be left at the bakehouse while the family went to church. As usual Chris managed to find exactly the right photographs to accompany the extracts from oral histories. Seasonal memories from the late 19th and 20th centuries. He also had pictures from the first group visit to in (the new home of Cornwall’s Record Office, Cornish Studies Library and all things Cornish). Peter recounted a poignant wartime story of Edwin Eddy which he discovered within the Community Archive (created in the 1980s by historians Stephen Hall and Clive Carter). Chris recounted his discovery of an interview with Ben Batten from the same archive. Mel recounted her discovery of Enid Carter. There were many there who remembered Ben Batten as their teacher. Most of all, thankyou again to One and All. We love it most when everyone joins in, tells a tale of their own, or enhances a memory, then someone else chips in with another perspective on the same moment in time. Many moments put together bring our past stories to life. There will be more Story/Memory nights throughout the year. They’ll be announced in advance. P.S. Pauline promises we shall find a mic stand to make life easier for everyone next time. PENLEE CLUSTER FILM CLUB AT THE KINGS ARMS, PAUL
