Brits opt to venture further afield for ski holidays according to Club Med report

CLUB MED’S latest winter ski report, ‘Today’s Snow Hunters: 2016/17’, reveals skiers are defying Brexit and spending on

winter holidays. The annual report, which maps the latest ski trends, reveals how many skiers are discounting any exchange-rate fears and following the snowfall instead. One in five ‘snow hunters’ now book far-flung destinations outside Europe; top of the wish-list for 61% of British skiers is America and Canada. Others are putting more unexpected winter holiday locations on their wish lists such as Japan for 20% and China at 17%, with the latter set to host the Winter Olympics in 2022. The desire from British skiers to venture further afield is also reflected in the all-inclusive holiday provider’s plans, with further expansions in the Far East including Tomamu in Japan and the recently opened Club Med Beidahu in China. Traditional European destinations still remain top of the list, which is reflected in the opening of the brand’s new resort in Samoëns in the French in 2017, but up-and-coming countries like Croatia and Bulgaria are also reported to be gaining prominence. Report findings also show that today’s skiing is very much a holiday for all ages, with modern resorts catering for the 3G family; children, parents and grandparents. Some 48% of those considering skiing are aged over 45, while 25% are aged over 55. With this in mind it’s unsurprising that 68% of respondents also describe ski holidays as now more accessible to a wider demographic. Reflecting the rising popularity of wellbeing and fitness trends, British skiers today describe a ski holiday as a way for them to switch off to escape everyday life (93%) and clear the mind (86%). More than two thirds also view skiing as relaxing, and two thirds say the availability of spa and wellness facilities is important to them. With 59% of ski parties in the last two years holidaying with at least one non-skier, the report proves that today’s winter ski holiday offers more than just ski.
