The Great War and the Wallops

Introduction

The idea for this project came to me during the Remembrance service in St Andrew’s in 2006. I was saddened by the thought that the individual story of the majority of these brave men would be unknown to most of the congregation. I could only presume that the same might apply at St Peter’s.

When I started my research, I wasn’t sure how many of the Wallop men’s families would still be represented in the villages and was pleasantly surprised. I have received help and encouragement from members of the Baigent, Barnes, Baverstock, Grist, Harman, Hiscock and Minault families. I would also like to thank many others who have helped and advised me – John Taylor-Firth (who put in a huge amount of work on Army records), Judy Maynard, Tony and Janet Hope, Richard Osmond, Jan Smith, Lindsay Murray-Twinn, Gary Richardson and the late Eileen Wilmott. My apologies if there is anybody I have omitted.

Research

If anyone is hoping to learn the full life story of the Wallop men who gave their lives in World War One, I’m afraid they are going to be disappointed. Even with the help of their descendants, it has not been possible, after 90 years, to discover as much as I would have liked about most of the men. The starting point for my research was the Census of 1901, followed by the records held by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, whose website is a mine of information. When the Census of 1911 is made available to researchers in 2012 (possibly earlier) we should learn much more about many of them.

An explanation

Each page has a code at the bottom, explaining the source of the information given which I hope will be easy enough to follow. Dates of birth shown are, for the most part, just the year, followed by the Registration details. The month is the last of each quarter and the reference shows page number and volume in each case. In some instances the birth place (obtained from Army records) differs but I have shown all the information for completeness.

The location given for parents and siblings is, actually, the place of registration rather than the place of birth. The second “Residence” box gives the information obtained from the CD ROM “Soldiers who died in the Great War” which, in turn, was taken from Army records at the time of enlistment or subsequently. There were clearly some cases where information was misheard or misinterpreted! See Fred Hiscock’s page as an example.

Andover Advertiser – Friday 23rd February 1917: Nether Wallop: The Toll of the War – Mr and Mrs H Barnes of this village, have received official notification from Lord Derby, Secretary of State for War, of the death of their grandson, Private Albert Ernest Barnes (sic) of the 4th Hants, from wounds received in action in Mesopotamia. It appears from the information imparted that the young fellow, who voluntarily joined up, was wounded in the abdomen and died on the 6th inst. The grand parents of Private Barnes, by whom he was reared, feel very deeply their loss, and doubtless parishioners will sympathise with them in their bereavement.

Andover Advertiser – Friday 6th 1917: Nether Wallop: How Pte Barnes fell – Mr and Mrs H Barnes of this village have received the following letter: - “Mesopotamia, 14th February. It is my painful duty to inform you that your grandson, Pte A Barnes, Reference Codes: 1 = Commonwealth War Graves Commission website 2 = Free BMD website 3 = Soldiers who died in the Great War CD ROM 4 = Census 1891 & 1901 (England) 5 = Army Medal records 6 = Andover Advertiser 7 = Nether Wallop Parish records 8 = Over Wallop Parish records 9 = Army List died of wounds on the 6th inst. On the night of the 6th I took out a patrol of 8 men, of whom your grandson was one. On our way back to the trench we were seen and fired on by the enemy and your grandson was hit in the stomach. We carried him back to the trench and bandaged him up, and shortly afterwards the stretcher bearers took him down. I thought he would be all right, as he seemed fairly comfortable when taken away, but a day or two afterwards I was officially informed that he died in the field ambulance. I was very much distressed at losing him, for he had been in my platoon ever since he came out here, and I always regarded him as one of my favourites. He was certainly a most willing worker, a good soldier, and one of the best men in the platoon. His comrades are all very sorry to lose him. As soon as I can find out I will let you know exactly where he is buried; roughly it is on the right (or west) bank of the Hai, about a mile below its junction with the Tigris. Please accept my deepest and most sincere sympathy in your bereavement. Yours sincerely, Kenneth R Weatherall, 2nd Lieut, B Company, 1 / 4 Hants Regiment”.

June’s mother, Mary (William’s only daughter) died in December 2008 in New Zealand aged 92 and her ashes are to be buried in St Andrew’s churchyard on Sunday 3rd May.

Although I had discovered quite a lot about Private Bundy, June was able to provide me with even more information which is now included in the books on show in both churches, including a rather splendid photograph of him as a young man.

Although none of the stories of the Wallop dead from WW1 has a happy ending, William’s story is a particularly poignant one and, with June’s permission, I set it out below.

William Herbert Bundy was born on 28th February 1884 to Osman Charles Bundy and his wife Ellen (née Plasket). He was their second son and third child. His brother Victor (who also served in WW1 but survived) and sister Annie came before him and two further sisters, Kate and Lily, came after. At the time of the 1901 census, the family were living on Church Hill - the house no longer exists - and the 17 year old William’s occupation is described as “carter on farm”.

In the spring of 1915, William married Lydia Morris in Lambeth, south London and, by 1916, he was working as the village Postman in Nether Wallop. This was classed as a reserved occupation and William was exempted from military service. Also, he had only one lung (whether from birth or due to a later illness, is not clear) which may have provided further grounds for exemption.

As is well known, the Battle of the Somme, which began on 1st July 1916, was not the resounding success that was needed to end the stalemate of trench warfare. It is probable that parents who had lost sons began to resent those who did not enlist. Unfortunately, William began to receive white feathers – presumably from those who did not fully understand why he had not enlisted already. Eventually, he felt sufficiently pressured into joining up and did so in Andover on 3rd November 1916. He joined the Royal Army Medical Corps and was sent to Aldershot to be trained. As part of the training he was required to swim across a river – in November. Almost inevitably, he caught a cold and, having only one lung, this turned to pneumonia. He died on 21st November 1916, having been in the Army for less than 3 weeks and leaving his widow, Lydia, and their baby daughter, Mary, who was not yet 6 months old.

Although his military career was exceptionally short, his sacrifice was recognised by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and he has a CWGC grave in St Andrew’s churchyard. His widow, Lydia, remarried in 1918 and she and her new husband, Bernard Sinden, lived in one half of what is now Farley Cottage. Mr Sinden walked out on his family on 1st April 1927 and was never seen again. Lydia died in 1954 and is also buried at St Andrew’s. Her daughter’s ashes will be placed in the same grave on 3rd May.

Army Service record – William Curtis attended Philander Smith College, Naini Tal, India. He was a member of the Naini Tal Volunteer Cadets from 1908-10 and a Reference Codes: 1 = Commonwealth War Graves Commission website 2 = Free BMD website 3 = Soldiers who died in the Great War CD ROM 4 = Census 1891 & 1901 (England) 5 = Army Medal records 6 = Andover Advertiser 7 = Nether Wallop Parish records 8 = Over Wallop Parish records 9 = Army List member of the Malay States Volunteer Rifles from 1913-14. He enlisted in 6th Battalion Royal Fusiliers at Colchester on 13th January 1915. His height is recorded as 5 foot 8 inches; he had a tattoo of a bird on his left forearm. The next of kin is cited as Mary A Curtis of Eastleigh, Sidegate Lane, Ipswich. He served in France between 29th July 1915 and 22nd July 1916, but received a gun shot wound during the attack on Pozières on 15th July 1916, being discharged from hospital on 20th August 1916. He transferred into the Machine Gun Corps at Grantham on 28th July 1917 and then was commissioned into the Tank Corps on 20th December 1917. After a period of training (presumably) he embarked from Folkestone and disembarked at Boulogne on 13th August 1918. Following William Curtis’ death, his next of kin changed from his mother to his wife, May, who was living at 5 Waddon Marsh Lane, Croydon at the time. She is described as “since dead” (within less than a month of her husband) so the administration of the estate reverted to his father, A T Curtis (a retired Colonial Official) of Knockwood, Nether Wallop. The family’s Solicitors (Ward, Bowie of Cheapside) wrote to the War Office asking the whereabouts of various items – “a gold chain, a silver identification disc, a gold ring and a gold wristlet watch, in addition to other articles forming his kit”. When his father applied for his son’s medals, his address is shown as the Green Hotel in Dulverton, Somerset, rather than Knockwood.

From an article appearing in the Parish magazine… William Charles Curtis was born on 5th January 1896, at 93 Clifton Road, Canning Town, London E16, to Alfred Tofts Curtis (born 1867 in Essex) and his wife, Mary Ann née Bryant. William had an older brother, Alfred Tofts (junior) who was born in 1892 in West Ham, London but I have not been able to trace any other siblings. At the time of William’s birth, Alfred senior was described as an Assistant Store Keeper (Corporation).

At some stage, the family moved to India. They do not show on the 1901 Census so one must assume that they had already left England by then. According to William’s Army papers, he attended the American-run Philander Smith College in Nainital in Uttarakhand State in north eastern India, in the foothills of the Himalayas. Between 1908 and 1910, he was a member of the Naini Tal Volunteer Cadets. Alfred senior must have taken up a new position because the next record of William’s military experience is as a member of the Malay States Volunteer Rifles, between 1913 and 1914.

Presumably the outbreak of war in August 1914 encouraged William to return home as, on 13th January 1915 (shortly after his 19th birthday), he enlisted as a Private in the 6th Battalion, the Royal Fusiliers, at Colchester. According to his papers, he was 5 foot 8 inches in height with the distinguishing mark of a tattoo of a bird on his left forearm. His next-of-kin is shown as Mary A Curtis of Eastleigh, Sidegate Lane, Ipswich.

After his training, William served in France between 29th July 1915 and 22nd July 1916. On 15th July 1916 he received a gunshot wound during the attack on Pozières in the Somme campaign but was discharged from hospital on 20th August 1916. What happened next is unclear but on 27th July 1917 he was nominated for an appointment to a commission and on the next day he transferred to the Machine Gun Corps still as a Private, joining this unit at Grantham. At the time, William’s previous occupation is

The next recorded event in William’s life is his marriage to May Davis (who was born in 1895 in Croydon). This was registered as taking place in Croydon between January and March 1918. Her address is shown as 5 Waddon Marsh Lane, Croydon. Sadly, their happiness was to be doubly short-lived.

William had been commissioned in the Tank Corps on 20th December 1917 and, presumably after further training, he embarked at Folkestone (and disembarked at Boulogne) on 13th August 1918, joining 5th Battalion, Tank Corps on 10th September 1918. According to the War Diary of the 5th Battalion, on 2nd October, they moved to Etricourt, south west of Cambrai, from where “tanks trekked to Fosse Wood”. On 3rd October 1918, the War Diary states: “Battalion went into action, 17 Tanks strong, 15 of which reached their objective. Eight of these were knocked out in the vicinity of the objective (Red line), remaining Tanks rallied at Fosse Wood. Weather good”. 2nd Lieut W C Curtis amongst those killed in action.

One must assume that his body was never found since, instead of a grave, William Curtis’ name appears on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial, south-east of Arras, which bears the names of over 9,000 men who fell in the period from 8th August 1918 to the date of the Armistice (11th November 1918) in Picardy and Artois, between the Somme and Loos, and who have no known grave.

William’s widow, May Curtis, died on 1st November 1918 at 5 Waddon Marsh Lane, of Influenza and Broncho-Pneumonia, one of the many victims of the Spanish Flu Epidemic, one assumes. With her death, the administration of the estate fell to his father, Alfred. Amongst William’s Army papers is a letter from Ward Bowie, Solicitors, of 7 King Street, Cheapside, London, EC2 to the War Office: “We are informed by his father that when leaving for abroad he had in his possession a gold chain, a silver identification disc, a gold ring and a gold wristlet watch in addition to other articles forming his kit”. It is unclear whether these items were ever restored to the family but the assumption is that they were not.

William was posthumously awarded the British Medal and the Victory Medal. It is not entirely clear from the Medal rolls whether he was also awarded the 1914-15 Star, although he would certainly have been eligible for it, having served in a theatre of war between August 1914 and December 1915. On 27th January 1922, his father applied to the War Office for the medals due to his late son. His address is shown as the Green Hotel, Dulverton, Somerset. I have been told that Alfred Curtis actively farmed at Knockwood which seems a surprising change of career from that of a Colonial Official. However, May’s death certificate describes her late husband as a ‘2nd Lieutenant in the Tank Corps (Farmer)’ so perhaps it was he who was farming the land at Knockwood, rather than his father? It seems unlikely that he was either the owner or the actual tenant of the Farm. In 1918 the Farm was owned by Henry C Knapman. William Woodford (who actually lived at Haydown Farm) was the tenant. Perhaps Alfred Curtis was his sub-tenant? Whether, by 1922, Alfred was living in Dulverton, or just staying there, is also unclear.

Andover Advertiser – Friday 26th February 1915: Nether Wallop: Funeral of Private W. Harman – as indicated in our report last week, the funeral of Private W Harman RFA took place on Saturday afternoon. The body was brought from Stockbridge Station whither it had been conveyed by rail from Cosham on Thursday afternoon in last week. A military escort accompanied the body from Alexandra Hospital to Cosham Station, the interment taking place in the Parish Churchyard at which the Vicar officiated; the body was conveyed from Garlogs Cottages, the home of the young man’s parents in a waggonette kindly provided by Dr Lyne Stivens on whose estate the deceased before his enlistment was employed and where his father is at present engaged. A brougham was also provided for the bereaved mother, who with the father, attended the last solemn rites. The announcement of the unexpected death at Alexandra Hospital, Cosham, at the comparatively early age of 23 years, came as a terrible shock and has elicited very general feelings of sympathy in the neighbourhood. There were also present at the funeral Messrs H and J Harman (brother - sic), Mrs H Harman (sister-in-law), Mr and Mrs C. Amor, Over Wallop (uncle and aunt), Mrs Lyne Stivens, Mrs Cooper, Mr Wiltshire (bailiff) and a strong contingent of workmen on the estate, from whom the bearers were selected.

In December 1918, 2nd Lieut French, O.C. ‘B’ Company, 2nd Wilts, wrote that Pte Hiscock had been wounded on 20th October in an attack near Haussy, east of Cambrai and had been “sent down to field ambulance”. In December 1919, the Army Council concluded that Fred and his stretcher bearers had never reached the field ambulance. The death announcement reads: “Reported wounded and missing on October 20, 1918, but now presumed dead, Pte F A Hiscock, Royal Gloucester Hussars, dearly loved son of A and L Hiscock, of Nether Wallop and East Tytherley”.

Private Frederick Hiscock commemorated in East Tytherley church, as A Hiscock. During his employment at Lockerley Hall he was known as Allan, possibly in order to avoid confusion with another Fred?

Robin’s late father, Allan, compiled a very entertaining family history. My thanks to Robin for allowing me access to this work.

Fred Hiscock was born in Nether Wallop on 2nd March 1890, the son of Allan Hiscock and his wife Annie Louisa (née Miles). Fred had an older brother (Will, who was Robin’s grandfather) and sister (Agnes, known as Aggie) and a younger brother Reg. Will and Reg both served in the First World War as well, but survived. The family lived at Nº 1 Bolton Row, Church Road, one of the row of seven thatched cottages that were burnt to the ground in 1928.

After attending the village school in Nether Wallop, Fred got a job as a stable lad at Lockerley Hall, where he was known as Allan Hiscock (perhaps in order to avoid confusion with another Fred?) and as such his death is commemorated on the war memorial in East Tytherley church which lists him as Private A Hiscock of the 2nd Battalion, the Wiltshire regiment.

Fred enlisted early in the war and, not surprisingly in view of his experience in the Lockerley stables, he joined the cavalry, specifically the Royal Gloucester Hussars. He signed up at Crickhowell, Brecon and his address at the time appears as ‘Easterleigh’ – presumably a miss-hearing of East Tytherley!

He was wounded quite early on and was invalided to a hospital near Southampton before going to Dartmouth to convalesce. Here he took up with a local girl, Beattie Heard, who worked as a cook but the Army put a stop to the friendship by sending him back to the war, attached to the 2nd Wiltshires.

By October 1918, the Allied Armies in France were pushing the Germans back on all fronts and Fred, as part of the Third Army, was involved in the attack on Haussy to the east of Cambrai on 19th October. His family had heard nothing from him since his last letter home, dated 26th September 1918, and became increasingly anxious when, following the Armistice on 11th November, there was still no word from him.

Then in December, they received a letter from 2nd Lieutenant French, Officer Commanding B Company, notifying them that Fred had been wounded on 20th October during the attack on Haussy but had been “sent down to field ambulance”. It seems possible that Fred and his stretcher bearers never reached their destination. As a result, Fred has no known grave but his death is commemorated on the Vis-en- Artois memorial which bears the names of over 9,000 men who fell in the period from 8th August 1918 to the date of the Armistice in Picardy and Artois, between the Somme and Loos, and whose bodies were never recovered. He was 28.

In 1919, his family accepted the inevitable and placed announcements in the local papers – “In loving memory of Private F A Hiscock of the Royal Gloucester Hussars, attached 2nd Wilts, who was reported wounded and missing on October 20, 1918, now presumed dead”.

The final word should rest with Allan Hiscock, Fred’s nephew: “Fred’s mother never ceased to cling to the faint hope that the absence of any message from her missing son

Andover Advertiser – Friday 4th June 1915: Nether Wallop: Casualties at the war – Private Arthur Horne is …. mentioned in the casualty lists as being wounded (second time) whilst operating with the British force in the Persian Gulf.

Andover Advertiser – Friday 8th June 1917: Nether Wallop: Died for his country – Information has been received by Mr Sherwood of the death of Pte A H Horne of the 2nd Dorsets, which occurred on the 31st August 1916, from malarial fever whilst a prisoner of war at Baghtche (sic) in Turkey. Pte Horne, a son of the late Mr Hezekiah Reference Codes: 1 = Commonwealth War Graves Commission website 2 = Free BMD website 3 = Soldiers who died in the Great War CD ROM 4 = Census 1891 & 1901 (England) 5 = Army Medal records 6 = Andover Advertiser 7 = Nether Wallop Parish records 8 = Over Wallop Parish records 9 = Army List Horne, was a native of this village, and joined the Imperial Forces some time before the outbreak of war, and was thereafter drafted to India. When the Turks proved treacherous and turned their backs on their old friends – the British – and joined forces with the Central Empires, he was one of the Indian Expeditionary Force into Mesopotamia, and in these operations he was thrice wounded, but even then recovered and returned to the ranks, and was probably among the number that surrendered with the gallant Townsend at Kut-el-Amira (sic). His mother some few years ago, with her daughters, emigrated to Canada to join another son, who had gone out to that enterprising colony some time previously. This last mentioned son since the war began, together with another local emigrant, named Alfred Price, enlisted in the force being raised in the Colony to assist the Mother Country, being attached to the 181st Huron Infantry Regiment, which has been in England now some months awaiting their turn to be sent out to the scene of hostilities.

Army Service record – Arthur Horne is described in his Army papers on enlistment as being 19 years and 7 months old (on 17th October 1910) and being 5 foot 4¼ inches in height, 123 lbs weight, with fair complexion, blue eyes and dark brown hair. He was originally posted to Poona in India (where, according to a medical report, he was treated for gonorrhoea in July/August 1914). A postcard from his aunt, Mrs Margetts of Leicester, dated 15th September 1914 informs the War Office that her nephew is Private A Horne, “stationed in India, 2nd Dorset regiment, H Company, Poona” and that his mother is living in Wingham, Ontario, Canada.

On 17th November 1914, Pte Horne was severely wounded in action at Sahil, near Basra and had a bullet removed from his leg. He was wounded again on 14th April 1915 at Shaiba – a slight wound to the fore finger, this time. On 28th September 1915, he was admitted to hospital a third time with a severe gunshot wound to the back, received at Kut-al-Amarah. On 24th August 1916 he was mentioned in a despatch by General Sir Percy Lake, KCB, KCMG for “distinguished service under Major General (Charles) Townsend during the defence of Kut-al-Amarah, Mesopotamia”.

Pte Horne was presumed to have been taken prisoner of war on the fall of Kut on 29th April 1916 and was later unofficially reported to have died whilst interned at Baghche internment camp in Armenia. Later still, confirmation was received from the Ottoman Red Crescent that he had died of malaria on 31st August 1916. Many of the British soldiers captured after the fall of Kut were held at Baghche and the conditions there were so bad that many died.

On 27th August 1920, the Infantry Record Office of the Dorset regiment at Exeter wrote to Mrs L E Horne in Canada informing her of her late son’s mention in despatches. The letter also refers to another son who had served in the Canadian Forces during the war. Presumably this is Albert Horne, Arthur’s younger brother.

Andover Advertiser – Friday 26th November 1915: Nether Wallop: The Appeal for Men – On Monday, Patrick Loughman and Bertie Sivier enlisted at Andover…. Charles Cook, son of Mr George Cook of Bend Street, in this parish, presented himself for enlistment last Saturday but was rejected on account of defective eyesight. Walter Seaward and Percy Southwell of Middle Wallop, offered themselves for the Yeomanry and Mechanical Transport services respectively, but were declined as these services are now reported full up. (Friday 3rd December 1915 – last week it was stated that Mr Walter Seaward was unable to join the Wilts Yeomanry as it was filled. We learn that this was not correct, Mr Seaward being accepted for that unit, and is now serving with them). Private Loughman, an Irish lad, was the first local recruit under the Derby scheme to join the forces, and was at first attached to the Remount Department, but afterwards transferred to the 4th Hants. Another stable lad, Private Leonard Brick, who was also employed at the same establishment, is also reported killed. Both were well known in the neighbourhood, where general regret will be felt at their loss.

Note: the Derby Scheme was established by the Earl of Derby who as Director- General of Recruitment in 1915 unveiled a policy under which men could give their voluntary 'assent' to being called up if necessary; the government in turn promised to call up married men last. In the event the Derby Scheme did not produce nearly enough men to satisfy army recruitment demands - fewer than 350,000 men in total. Consequently the scheme was dropped in December the same year in favour of the introduction of conscription via the Military Service Act of January 1916.

The three medals awarded to most combatants in the First World War were: the 1914 Star, also known as the Mons Star (or the 1914-15 Star, as here); the British War Medal; and the Victory Medal, all of which could be given posthumously. They were nicknamed “Pip”, “Squeak” and “Wilfred” after a trio of post-War cartoon animals. Arthur Miles’ 1914-15 Star is, therefore, Pip.

NOTES Father (Paul) was a Protestant minister from the south of France who was killed while doing missionary work in Madagascar. Pierre attended the Protestant École Alsacienne in Paris and then moved to England to study agriculture (probably) where he met and married Dora. He returned to France to do his National Service, with a colonial regiment based in Marseilles, and was back in England by 1912. He was tenant at Martin’s farm near Grateley (referred to as Martin’s Warren in the 1901 Census). Andover Advertiser – Friday 28th August 1914: Wallop: Mr P Minault has been called up to join the French colours and left early this week.

Andover Advertiser – Friday 24th September 1915: Grateley: Going away: After the sale at Martin's Farm on Wednesday, the district will lose one of its most popular residents in the person of Mrs Minault. Having lost her husband, who was killed while serving in the French Army, Mrs Minault decided to give up the farm, hence the loss. She is well known in the Andover and Salisbury districts and if ever intentions of a future return to the district realise, she will be sure of a sincere welcome from many genuine friends.

Andover Advertiser – Friday 8th October 1915: Grateley: Upon leaving the district, Mrs Minault wishes to acknowledge the kindness shown by many friends during the time she was at Martin's Farm.

The Sale at Martin's Farm proved a very successful affair, exceptional prices being realised for practically all the lots. In spite of the isolated nature of the place, there was a very large attendance. Messrs F Ellen and Sons were the auctioneers.

Andover Advertiser – Friday 19th November 1915: IN MEMORIAM. In loving memory of Pierre, the dearly loved husband of Dora Minault, killed in action, November 18, 1914. So sadly missed by his wife and little boys. 12 Borthwick Road, Boscombe.

Pierre Minault was born on 19th November 1887 in the Gard region of southern France, the only son of Paul Minault, a Protestant minister and missionary, and his wife Bertha. Paul was murdered in 1897, possibly by Madagascan natives during an uprising against French rule. His widow died about a year later and Pierre and his three sisters were brought up by their maternal grandparents.

In 1899, Pierre moved to Paris and lived with his Minault grandfather while studying at the École Alsacienne, a Protestant school. Having passed his Baccalaureate in 1906 he headed for England to improve his English and learn about commerce. He decided to open a chain of sweet shops and hit upon the idea of making the “berlingots” in the shop window. He opened his first shop in Antwerp, another in London and, later, in Paris and Marseilles.

While paying a visit to London at Christmas in 1907 (possibly with a view to studying agriculture so that he could emigrate to Canada or Australia) he met and, fairly rapidly thereafter, married Dora Smith, early in 1908. Their first son, Paul, was born in 1909 while Pierre was doing his Military Service in the French Colonial Infantry regiment, in Marseilles.

Once his two years service militaire was complete (the brutality of which had upset Dora in particular), the family returned to England. Pierre entered into a five year Tenancy Agreement with the Earl of Portsmouth in June 1912 and became the tenant of ‘Martin’s Farm Rabbit Warren situate in the Parish of Over Wallop in the County of Southampton’. Martin’s Farm is now part of the Porton Down land and is marked as Martin’s Clump on the Ordnance Survey map of the area. With the help of his father in law, William Smith, Pierre established what seems to have been a successful business, raising partridges for the local land owners. He was clearly a very enterprising young man. A second son, Sylvain, was born in 1912 while Pierre and Dora were living at Martin’s Farm.

When war was declared in August 1914, Pierre (who had never really enjoyed the military life) hoped to be exempted from the call up because he was a farmer but the French Consul in Southampton advised him that he must rejoin the French Army, which he did, as a Sergeant.

Pierre recorded his experiences of the war in a diary which starts on 22nd September and concludes with his death on 18th November 1914. It is an intensely sad document and paints a depressing picture of life in the French Army during the first few months of the war. In just three months, his ill-equipped and ill-fed regiment were marched hither and thither around the Somme, living off the land and sleeping rough, without blankets or any form of bedding, under the command of ineffective officers who kept well out of the firing line themselves. Pierre caught dysentery and, while suffering from bouts of diarrhoea, was accused of dereliction of duty and demoted. Being a tall man, he was aware that he might make an easy target and, on 16th November 1914, he was shot in the forehead by a sniper and died two days later. He is buried in the churchyard at Hénu, near Arras.

In September 1915, Dora who had become a popular member of the community, moved from Martin’s Farm, initially to Grateley and later to Paris so that her boys could be brought up as Frenchmen. In 1928 she married Donald King, an American, who was studying at the Sorbonne and in 1929 the family moved to America where Pierre’s descendants still live.

Andover Advertiser – Friday 8th February 1918: Nether Wallop: Terrible Aviation Accident – On Sunday morning just as people in the neighbourhood were assembling for public worship, a shocking aviation accident happened, which caused the death of one airman and serious injuries to another. The victims of the accident were Lieut. Morgan, a popular officer in the R.F.C., who has recently been residing at the Mallows in the village, and Lieut. Peacock. It appears that they made an ascent from the Aerodrome in an Avro 2-seater at Lopcombe Corner, and flew down near the village, making a halt for breakfast, after which they attempted to re-ascend; the machine, however, did not appear to rise to any appreciable altitude, and came down almost immediately with a great crash in a field on Berry Court Farm, almost to the rear of Peacock’s Cottages. The accident was observed by persons going to church, and efforts were made at once to rescue the unfortunate airmen from the wreckage. Lieut. Morgan was so badly injured that he expired in about 20 minutes, and Lieut. Peacock was removed in a Red Cross van to Tidworth Hospital for medical treatment. In the company of some sympathetic ladies she visited and viewed the dead body of her husband as it lay on the ground, and a pathetic scene occurred.

Army Service record – Capt Morgan is described on his enlistment into King Edward’s Horse (a regiment of colonial volunteers, based in London) as being 5 foot 7 inches in height with brown eyes and ‘dark’ hair. Previously, he had served in the Southern Rhodesia Volunteers. He served in France between 21st April and 14th October 1915, being promoted Corporal on 3rd March 1915 and Sergeant on 12th September 1915. He was commissioned in the Royal Field Artillery on 17th October 1915. He graduated as a Flying Officer on 14th July 1916. In a letter dated 13th August 1917, Capt Morgan wrote “I reported sick in East Africa and after a spell of two weeks I was returned to duty in November 1916. I had my last flight at Dar-es- Salaam on 29th November 1916, was taken bad again and put on board the hospital ship ‘Gascon’ on 1st December 1916 and sailed for Durban”. He subsequently returned to England. On 19th July 1917 his medical report states: “Malaria has now disappeared but there is occasional trouble with the urine which is considered to be due to bilharzia contracted 12 years ago”. On 22nd December 1916, he was diagnosed with renal calculus (kidney stones). A note dated 15th November 1917 reads: “He states he has had no attack of malarial fever since (his) last Medical Board. Also, that he feels better now than he has done for many years. This officer is a Rhodesian and on medical grounds the Board recommends he be employed in a warm climate. Fit after 1 month’s flying at home, for service in a warmer climate. Caught malaria in East Africa”.

Telegram sent on 7th February 1918 to W C Morgan, Morgan’s Spur, Bulawayo, Rhodesia, reads: “Deeply regret inform you 2 Lieut O W Morgan Royal Artillery attached Flying Corps killed aeroplane accident Salisbury third February and Army Council express their sympathy”. The passenger was 2nd Lieut E J Peacocke (not Peacock) aged 18. The aircraft “stalled on a turn”. The papers also contain an invoice from H Fowgies of Stockbridge (Builder, Carpenter, Undertaker and House Decorator) dated 5th February 1918: “Oak coffin with brass furniture for the late Oswald William Morgan, also shroud and trimmings - £10”.

At the time of the accident, the widow, Mrs Edytha Morgan, is described as living at 44 Cleveland Mansions, Widley Street, Elgin Avenue, Maida Vale, W – and later (3rd July 1918) at 4 Fellows Road, Hampstead, NW. A letter on file from William C Morgan, dated 6th July 1918, asks the War Office to assist the widow with the fare to Cape Town (on the grounds that the deceased would have been entitled to this, had he survived the war). It is not clear if this request was granted.

Casualty Card: Flying an Avro 504J (serial number B/3156). Court of Inquiry concluded that the accident was due to that fact that 2nd Lieut Morgan stalled the machine on a left hand turn when without enough height to recover control.

After note: 2nd Lieut Evelyn Jeffreys Peacocke (born 1899) died on 4th February 1918 and is buried at Tidworth Military Cemetery (CWGC grave reference E16).

Private Mouland emigrated from this village some two or three years ago to Australia. On the outbreak of war he enlisted in that colony and was attached to an infantry regiment, being subsequently sent after a period of training to Egypt and afterwards was sent to the Dardanelles. Here they were engaged in the hot fight which took place on the landing of the British forces in Gallipoli, where he became detached from his platoon and is now probably a prisoner in the hands of the Turks.

Pte Muspratt, who is in the 4th Hants will, we understand, shortly proceed to India.

Andover Advertiser – Friday 22nd September 1916: Nether Wallop: War Casualty – The parents of Lance Corporal Fred Muspratt have been informed that their son has been wounded and is now undergoing treatment in a Birmingham military hospital. We understand that he has been injured in the shoulder. Friends in the neighbourhood, where he is well known, will wish him a speedy recovery. He had previously served in the Dardanelles, from which place he was invalided home, having contracted enteric fever. After having fully recovered from this he volunteered for service in France, where he has been for the last two or three months.

Andover Advertiser – Friday 8th February 1918: Nether Wallop: Unwelcome News – A few weeks ago we reported in these columns that Lance-Corporal F Muspratt was missing and had been for some time. This news, when received from the War Office by his parents, naturally caused them great anxiety and the worst was feared. They have recently been informed by the Genevan Red Cross Society from the lists published and despatched from Berlin he died in the prisoners’ hospital (military), Ghent, on 6th November, from wounds in the abdomen. This has been confirmed by an official report now received from the Military Records Office at Exeter, who report the facts as above stated. The sympathy of fellow villagers and others will, we are sure, be extended to Mr and Mrs Muspratt and family on the sad and painful intelligence they have received.

Andover Advertiser – Friday 19th November 1915: Nether Wallop: Back from the trenches – Private Frank Clarke, a reservist who left this village at the outbreak of war, but whose home is now at Broughton, is in the neighbourhood on short leave after over 12 months’ service in the trenches, where he had some thrilling and interesting experiences. Private George Noyce of Over Wallop, who has also been in Flanders for a similar period, and has been in several hot engagements, including that of the recent capture of Loos by the British forces, arrived home for a short rest last Friday, and rejoins his regiment tomorrow. We are glad to report that both are looking well.

As in the other cases, his friends in the locality are delighted to see him and to hear of his interesting reminiscences in the Turkish peninsula.

Andover Advertiser – Friday 4th August 1916: Over Wallop: The Big Push – The parents of Corporal George Noyce who has been serving with forces almost from the commencement of the war, have been informed that he has returned from the front wounded in the left arm and leg, and is now in hospital at Manchester. It is hoped that his wounds are not serious and that he will have a quick recovery.

Andover Advertiser – Friday 6th November 1914: Over Wallop: Condolence – At a meeting of the Stockbridge Ruri-Decanal Conference held recently under the presidency of the Rev R J Chandler, rural dean, a vote of deepest sympathy with the Rev O E and Mrs Owen upon the loss of their son, who was killed fighting for his King and country, was proposed by the Rev R S Routh and carried unanimously.

Army Service record – Norman Owen’s father is described at the time of his birth as a retired Lieut in the Royal Marine Artillery. Norman was educated at Stubbington House, Fareham from September 1903 to April 1907, then, from May 1907 he went to Cheltenham College where he joined the Officer Training Corps, becoming a Colour Sergeant. Army service record – Height at time of Attestation: 5 ft 9 inches. Served in OTC at Tonbridge School (Lance Corporal in 1914). Father – Major Charles Leslie Peacocke described as Chief Inspector of Mines, Johannesburg. Uncle (mother’s brother) Major A J Marten RFA, handled much of the correspondence after the accident as the mother was in no fit state to do so. The Father renounced Administration of the late Officer’s estate which was granted to Mrs Swinburne – under the circumstances it is submitted that the memorial Plaque and Scroll may be sent to the Mother”.

Additional information – there is no evidence of the parents’ marriage in England or Wales so, since their first child was born in India, it is possibly safe to assume that the marriage took place in India as well (unless in Ireland?). The younger daughter is called Catharine on the 1901 Census but Kathleen at the time of her birth. There is a mention in the Army service records of a brother “in India” (as well of “sisters”).

The step father, Umfreville Swinburne, was the younger son of Sir John Swinburne, the 7th Baronet. In the 1901 Census his occupation is shown as Mining engineer. The family seat was at Capheaton Hall in Northumberland. His unusual Christian name is a family one, of Plantagenet origin. He married Arnoldine on either 31.07.1905 or 01.08.1905. She is wrongly described as a widow in “The Plantagenet Roll of the Blood-Royal”. Umfreville served in the Matabele War of 1895-96 and played a leading role in the establishment of the Francistown Defence Force in what is now Botswana in 1899. Between 1899 and 1903 he was a Justice of the Peace in Francistown, served in the Boer war and was wounded in WW1 (?), ending up as a Major in the 8th Battalion Seaforth Highlanders. He died (without issue) on 07.11.1931 in Ringwood, Hampshire, aged 62 (while resident in Regents Park, London). The poet, Algernon Swinburne, was a cousin.

Coombe Priory, near Shaftesbury, Dorset, where the family seem to have been living in 1917, is currently (October 2010) on the market with a “guide price” of over £3 million.

Andover Advertiser – Friday 7th May 1915: Over Wallop: Sad tidings – On Sunday morning Mr W Pepler, of this village received the unwelcome intelligence of the death of his only son Albert, which occurred in Canada the previous day, when the news was duly cabled over. It is a remarkable fact that another young fellow named Reginald Bulpitt, who went out with him, is also dead, having lost his life in the wreck of the “Empress of Ireland” which occurred in the St Lawrence, now just about 12 months ago, and which fact was duly recorded in this paper at the time.

A son of Mr and Mrs Stokes of this village, he had been at the French Front for a year and seven months, when the chill which proved fatal compelled him to give up his duties. Captain Stock, C F, has sent the following letter to Mrs Stokes: - “I am very sorry to have to inform you that your son, Private E Stokes, died of pneumonia on the 17th February. I buried him with all reverence with the Church of England service, and will shortly have a cross with inscription put up over the grave. He received every care and attention from both doctors and nurses. You will feel comfort in the midst of your sorrow from the thought that he gave his life at the call of duty in the sacred cause of patriotism and surely God will accept his sacrifice and take him to be with Himself for ever.”

Andover Advertiser – Friday 6th April 1917: Died in France – Driver E C Stokes, son of Mr and Mrs Stokes of Kimpton, died in hospital in France on 17th February. Lieut Ledgard, of the 6th Batt Wiltshire Regiment, writing on 7th March to Miss Stokes, said the sad news of the death of Pte Stokes had come as a great shock to him and all the boys of the transport (sic) and he wished to convey all their sympathy to her and her parents. Pte E Stokes had been in the battalion since it was formed, everybody knew him and he was well liked by everyone. He was one of the best on the transport, always being cheery, and would willingly do anything, no matter what sort of job it was. Pte Stokes returned from the Field Ambulance on 2nd February. “On his return I noticed that he had a cold, which did not seem to get any better. On 7th February he complained of his cold, so I put him off all duty, the next day he asked to go sick and so on 8th February was admitted to the Field Ambulance. When I last saw him I asked him not to be away longer than he could help, as he was a man we could ill afford to lose, and he promised to return as soon as he could.”
