Covid-19 Disinformation Briefing No.1 27Th March 2020
Briefing paper Covid-19 Disinformation Briefing No.1 27th March 2020 Covid-19 Disinformation Briefing No.1 This is the first in a series of briefings from ISD’s Digital Research Unit on the information ecosystem around Covid-19. This first briefing compiles research from ISD’s own analysis of online platforms, as well as summarising recent investigations and research on the state of play of disinformation around Covid-19. Briefing paper Covid-19 Disinformation Briefing No.1 27th March 2020 Top Lines • Both state-sponsored media and extremist movements are exploiting the Covid-19 situation to spread harmful and hateful messaging on social media; • Anti-migrant and far-right networks are exploiting the Covid-19 situation to spread disinformation targeting migrants, refugees and other vulnerable populations on- and offline, as well as explicit threats of violence/harm to non-white populations from white supremacist groups online; • Crisis points like Covid-19 are playing into “accelerationism” on the extreme right, which promotes the idea that democracy is a failure and that groups should accelerate its end through mobilising social conflict and violence; • Misinformation about cures or treatments for coronavirus continue to circulate widely on Twitter and Facebook, often amplified by politicians and news media, and has contributed to fatal offline incidents; • Notwithstanding technology platforms’ efforts to address disinformation on Covid-19, we are still seeing platforms both large and small are hosting conspiracy theories that could undermine efforts to deal with the crisis and its growth, including those disputing the reality of the virus and its impacts on health and life, which are particularly prevalent in closed groups and chat channels; • There are some attempts to profiteer off the coronavirus pandemic through online platforms and advertising, despite platforms banning such practices. -

May 3, 2017 Mr. Jared Kushner Senior Adviser to the President the White House 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW Washington, DC 20500
May 3, 2017 Mr. Jared Kushner Senior Adviser to the President The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW Washington, DC 20500 Dear Mr. Kushner: Democracy 21 calls on you to make a full public disclosure of the foreign lenders, investors and business associates involved in your extensive business holdings. We believe this information is essential in order to assure the American people that there are no conflicts of interest between the important foreign policy responsibilities assigned to you by President Trump and your extensive business holdings. On April 25, 2017, Democracy 21 wrote to you to express our concerns about the potential conflicts of interest and the appearance of such conflicts that you currently face in your role as Senior Adviser to the President. The letter cited the unprecedented policy responsibilities you have been given by President Trump in your role as Senior Adviser to, and confidant of, the President, and your extensive business holdings. The policy responsibilities assigned to you and mentioned in the April 25 letter include foreign policy matters involving China, Canada, Mexico, the Middle East and brokering peace between Israel and the Palestinians. The letter also cited a Washington Post article that said you also are “the primary point of contact for presidents, ministers and ambassadors from more than two dozen countries.”1 The April 25 letter discussed the fact that your decision to make only a partial divestiture of your business holdings resulted in your continuing to retain extensive business interests. According to a Washington Post article that discussed the financial disclosure report you have filed, “Kushner reported owning a stake in nearly 300 different assets or companies collectively worth hundreds of millions of dollars, most of which he still owns.”2 1 P. -
FAKE NEWS!”: President Trump’S Campaign Against the Media on @Realdonaldtrump and Reactions to It on Twitter
“FAKE NEWS!”: President Trump’s Campaign Against the Media on @realdonaldtrump and Reactions To It on Twitter A PEORIA Project White Paper Michael Cornfield GWU Graduate School of Political Management [email protected] April 10, 2019 This report was made possible by a generous grant from William Madway. SUMMARY: This white paper examines President Trump’s campaign to fan distrust of the news media (Fox News excepted) through his tweeting of the phrase “Fake News (Media).” The report identifies and illustrates eight delegitimation techniques found in the twenty-five most retweeted Trump tweets containing that phrase between January 1, 2017 and August 31, 2018. The report also looks at direct responses and public reactions to those tweets, as found respectively on the comment thread at @realdonaldtrump and in random samples (N = 2500) of US computer-based tweets containing the term on the days in that time period of his most retweeted “Fake News” tweets. Along with the high percentage of retweets built into this search, the sample exhibits techniques and patterns of response which are identified and illustrated. The main findings: ● The term “fake news” emerged in public usage in October 2016 to describe hoaxes, rumors, and false alarms, primarily in connection with the Trump-Clinton presidential contest and its electoral result. ● President-elect Trump adopted the term, intensified it into “Fake News,” and directed it at “Fake News Media” starting in December 2016-January 2017. 1 ● Subsequently, the term has been used on Twitter largely in relation to Trump tweets that deploy it. In other words, “Fake News” rarely appears on Twitter referring to something other than what Trump is tweeting about. -
