SAINT LEO THE GREAT 440-461 Pope, Doctor of the Church th One of only two Popes to be called great, Leo was born in the late 4 century, probably of a Tuscan family. He was at Rome as a deacon under Pope Celestine I and Pope Sixtus III (422-440). As a deacon Leo was quite influential. He informed Celestine I about the Nestorian heresy in 430 and assisted Sixtus III and also Archbishop Cyril of Alexandria. In September of 440 Leo was elected Pope. Leo set about making the Roman church a model for all other churches. He wrote over 96 sermons, in which he stressed almsgiving, fasting and prayer, and also clarified Catholic doctrine, especially on the Incarnation. He was a strong advocate against heresy and convened a council of clergy and laymen to dispute the Manichaean beliefs and reinforce orthodoxy. He personally wrote letters to all of the Italian bishops warning of the false teachings. Leo was an advocate of orthodoxy rather than an original theologian. In 451 the Council of Calcedon was held in Asia Minor and at least 600 bishops attended. Leo sent 3 representatives. Leo’s Tome which he had written was read to the Council. Included in it were his concise definitions of the doctrine of the Incarnation and the two natures of Christ. His statement on the latter later become the Church’s official teaching. However, Leo refused to accept the Council’s decision to recognize the patriarch of Constantinople as primate over the Eastern churches. Leo had a lot of personality and courage. -

The Holy See SOLEMNITY OF THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY POPE FRANCIS ANGELUS Saint Peter's Square Saturday, 15 August 2015 [Multimedia] Dear Brothers and Sisters, Good morning and Happy Feast of Our Lady, Today the Church is celebrating one of the most important feasts dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary: the Feast of her Assumption. At the end of her earthly life, the Mother of Christ was assumed body and soul to Heaven, that is to say, into the glory of eternal life, in full communion with God. Today’s page of the Gospel (Lk 1:39-56) presents to us Mary who, just after conceiving Jesus through the work of the Holy Spirit, goes to visit her elderly relative Elizabeth, who is also miraculously expecting a child. In this meeting filled with the Holy Spirit, Mary expresses her joy with the Canticle of the Magnificat, because she has become fully aware of the meaning of the great things that are being accomplished in her life: through her, all that her people were expecting is brought to fulfillment. But the Gospel also shows us the truest cause of Mary’s greatness and her blessedness: the cause is faith. Indeed, Elizabeth greets her with these words: “blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord” (Lk 1:45). Faith is the heart of Mary’s whole story: she is the believer, the great believer; she knows — and she says so — that historically the violence of the powerful, the pride of the rich, the arrogance of the proud are burdensome. -

It is situated with the Mediterranean to the west and borders Syria to the east and south (see Figure 8.1 ). In 1939, Hatay was the last province to offi cially become part of the Republic of Turkey ( Shields 2011 : 17–47, 143–75, 232–49). Now, the ethnically diverse population of about 1.5 million is primarily composed of people of Turkish and Arab descent. With its unique blend of diff erent languages and cultures, Hatay became known for its religious tourism industry. -

Calvary Or Catastrophe? French Catholicism's First World War Abstract CALVARY OR CATASTROPHE? FRENCH CATHOLICISM’S FIRST WORLD WAR Arabella L. Hobbs Professor Gerald Prince The battlefield crucifixes that lined the Western Front powerfully connected industrialized warfare with the Christian past. This elision of the bloody corporeality of the crucifixion with the bodily suffering wrought by industrial warfare forged a connection between religious belief and modern reality that lies at the heart of my dissertation. Through the poignancy of Christ’s suffering, French Catholics found an explanatory tool for the devastation of the Great War, affirming that the blood of ther F ench dead would soon blossom in rich harvest. This dissertation argues that the story of French Catholicism and the Great War uncovers a complex and often dissonant understanding of the conflict that has become obscured in the uniform narrative of disillusionment and vain sacrifice ot emerge in the last century. Considering the thought to emerge from the French renouveau catholique from 1910 up to 1920, I argue that far from symbolizing the modernist era of nihilism, the war in fact created meaning in a world that had lost touch with its God. -

Samuel H. Kress Collection 1961.9.77 ENTRY This panel, of large dimensions, bears the image of the Maestà represented according to the iconographic tradition of the Hodegetria. [1] This type of Madonna and Child was very popular among lay confraternities in central Italy; perhaps it was one of them that commissioned the painting. [2] The image is distinguished among the paintings of its time by the very peculiar construction of the marble throne, which seems to be formed of a semicircular external structure into which a circular seat is inserted. Similar thrones are sometimes found in Sienese paintings between the last decades of the thirteenth and the first two of the fourteenth century. [3] Much the same dating is suggested by the delicate chrysography of the mantles of the Madonna and Child. [4] Recorded for the first time by the Soprintendenza in Siena c. 1930 as “tavola preduccesca,” [5] the work was examined by Richard Offner in 1937. In his expertise, he classified it as “school of Duccio” and compared it with some roughly contemporary panels of the same stylistic circle.
