I know I said that last year; however I am reliably informed that it is something to do with growing old. One week after the publication of this magazine, there is a Sunday morning meeting on December 16th for ‘Pigs in Blankets and Mince Pies’ occasion, together with the ‘SANTA RUN’ in Wardown Park. So please will all members come along and join in the Club Festive Activities. There is a ‘Post Christmas’ sailing event planned for Friday 28th December. This is also being held down at Wardown Park Lake, commencing at 10am. It will be followed by a celebratory meal at the Moat House for 12 noon. Trust you will all be supporting these events and have been in contact with Pete Carmen to pay the required deposit for the meal. I do trust that you all have found time to do all you’re Christmas shopping and looking forward to going to the New Year’s sales with the family Ha! Ha! Hemel Hempstead Club has got off to a good start with four meetings having taken place over the last few months, the last one being on Saturday 17th November. -

PERCIVAL PRENTICE T.1 VS618 /G-AOLK MUSEUM ACCESSION NUMBER X005-0834 One of 349 production standard Percival P.40 Prentice Tiger Moth replacement two-seat basic trainer aircraft built for RAF service as the RAF’s first side-by-side trainer, and delivered 1947-49, serving as trainers until late 1953 and for training air signallers until mid-1956. Built under sub-contract at the Blackburn Aircraft factory at Brough, serials block VS609 – VS758. Contract No 623. Constructor’s number PAC/225. A total of 483 Prentices were built including some for Argentina and India. 5 May 49 First Flight, at Luton. 13 May 49 Awaiting Collection. 18 May 49 To No 22 Flying Training School (FTS), RAF Syerston, Notts. Used to train Royal Navy personnel as pilots. Carried fuselage codes FCL-V until 1951, and then O-D. This unit used the Prentice until November 1953. 26 Oct 53 Accident, Cat. 2 damage, caused undercarriage damage during landing by student. Repaired. 9 Mar 54 To No 9 Maintenance Unit, RAF Cosford, Salop for storage. 17 Aug 55 Declared non-effective aircraft. 25 Apr 56 Transferred to civil register as G-AOLK. 11 May 56 Sold to Freddie Laker’s Aviation Traders Ltd at Southend, Essex. Aviation Traders purchased from the Ministry of Supply an eventual 252 of the RAF’s Prentices for civil conversion, making them nominally the 8th or 9th largest air force in the world at the time, with the aircraft ferried from RAF Maintenance Units at Cosford, High Ercall and Shawbury, all in Shropshire, to Southend as ‘Operation Prentice’ with RAF markings painted out and civil registrations crudely painted over them. -

Journal of Aeronautical History Paper 2019/05 On the early history of spinning and spin research in the UK Part 3: the period 1940 to 1949 Brian Brinkworth Waterlooville UK Abstract This third part of a study of the history of spinning and spin research in the UK covers the decade of the 1940s, which was dominated by almost five years of the Second World War. New types of aircraft were required to replace obsolete ones and to fill changing operational needs, though they were subject to essentially the same spin testing procedures as in the pre-war period. Testing with dynamic models continued in the vertical Free Spinning Tunnel at the Royal Aircraft Establishment, and at full-scale at the Aeroplane and Armament Experimental Establishment. In the later years of the war, the first squadrons of jet-propelled types were formed, followed by the appearance of aircraft with new configurations for flight in the compressible range. Although little fundamental research on spinning could be undertaken in wartime conditions, progress continued, mainly through empirical developments in the model testing methods. These included refinement of the modelling by, for example, representing the angular momentum of engines and propellers, and of the test procedures to improve the agreement between the outcome of a model test and that of the corresponding aircraft test at full-scale. These were significant advances, which were made at the expense of greater complexity in the methods employed. 1. Giuseppe Brincat I nomi degli aerei da combattimento della Royal Air Force e della Fleet Air Arm L’idea di elevarsi da terra per osservare o recar danno al nemico sarà venuta a molti generali durante i conflitti armati fin dai secoli più remoti, ma la possibilità di avvalersi di aeromobili a scopo militare fu realizzata soltanto con l’invenzione dei palloni aerostatici. I primi ad utilizzarli furono i francesi, nel 1794 a Fleurus, quando il pallone di ricognizione L’Entreprenant sorvolò il campo di battaglia per osservare i movimenti delle truppe austriache. Nell’Ottocento furono apportati alcuni miglioramenti ma i dirigibili rimasero ingombranti e preda facile dell’artiglieria. Lo sviluppo tecnico dell’aviazione risultò molto lento e bisognava aspettare i primi anni del Novecento per vedere decollare e atterrare sano e salvo un aeroplano vero e proprio. Il primo volo di un congegno più pesante dell’aria, dotato di ali e di un motore con propulsione a elica e capace di essere controllato, si attribuisce ai fratelli Wilbur e Orville Wright che nel 1903, dopo alcuni esperimenti con alianti, riuscirono a staccarsi da terra e coprire 300 metri in 59 secondi. Da quel momento il progresso fu rapidissimo, tanto che in un decennio i biplani si moltiplicarono in vari paesi. Il primato del volo militare spetta all’Italia. Il Corpo Aeronautico Militare, formato nel 1911 per la campagna di colonizzazione della Libia, eseguì il primo volo di ricognizione il 23 ottobre di quell’anno e il primo bombardamento soltanto pochi giorni dopo, il 1 novembre, sulle postazioni ottomane. La prima bomba fu lanciata dal pilota Giulio Gavotti sull’oasi di Ain Zara in Libia da un monoplano costruito in Germania che aveva il nome di Taube, che vuol dire ‘colomba’, un uccello che ironicamente spesso simboleggia la pace.
