Hula- Materials One hoop per child

What to do 1. Give each child a hula hoop. Encourage them to try to use it. Demonstrate how they should move their hips to keep the hula hoop from falling. 2. Have a hula hoop countdown. Everyone begins hula-hooping together. Count backwards from ten and try to keep hula-hooping until the countdown finishes. 3. Use the hula hoops with different types of music. Is one type of music easier to hula-hoop to than another? Chart the results.

What to do 1. Create an aisle in the classroom. Some suggestions are: a chalk-drawn aisle, rug, runner, piece of fabric, sheet, rope, lined-up chairs, children lined up, wooden blocks, or beams. 2. This is an opportunity for each child to be highlighted. Encourage each child to move down the aisle in his own way. You will want to assist in the activity by calling out the child’s name and asking him to identify the movement he has in mind. This can be sung to the tune of “Shortenin’ Bread” or any other tune.

4. Other movements might include galloping, slithering, , sliding, waddling, walking backwards, swimming, crab walking, and walking with eyes closed or hands on hips. 5. Encourage the children to attach creative names to their movements. For example, Jumpin’ Jasper, Boing Boing, Tigger Bounce, Skipple, Cherry Picking, or Chocolate Hipple .

What to do 1. Head to the local library and borrow several different genres of music. There are many child-oriented CDs and tapes to be found. Make sure you acquire a wide variety of musical styles. 2. At school, show the children the CDs or tapes and explain that you are interested in what type of music they like. 3. Take the CD or tape player outdoors. Ask the children to choose what type of music they want to try out first. 4. Put on the music and dance, dance, dance! 5. Pay attention to how the children react to the music. Does it hold their interest or do they drift away to play? Do they dance to the music or simply listen to it? Do they attempt to sing along?
