Professors of the Year for 2002-03. This year’s honorees are from diverse backgrounds and disci- plines. Some grew up in South while others were born and schooled a continent away. However, they all share a passion for teaching, a dedication to students and a commitment to excel- lence. "Community colleges attract a diverse group of students of all ages and backgrounds," writes Jose Macia, North Campus Professor of the Year. "As instructors, it is our job to bring these different students together in understanding, learning and caring about the subject," he continues. Downtown Adjunct Professor of the Year Leo Stouder quotes author Frank McCourt when describing his own teaching philos- ophy: "If you’re teaching and not learning, then you’re not teach- ing. And if you don’t enjoy yourself in the classroom, you might as well be driving a taxi." Professors of the Year, who were honored at BCC’s May 7 graduation, receive a professional development award of up to $1,500. Adjuncts receive a $500 check from the BCC Foundation. Students nominate the candidates, and selection committees on each campus choose the winners. From left: LaVonne Aadland, Jodie Fry, Harvey Liftin, Jose Macia and Claudio Noriega.
