Almost every town has at least one family house that defines the community. Often that house was erected by an early settler or leader in the community. For example, in Sycamore that structure was known as the Dutton House that once belonged to the founder of the National Bank and Trust Company. In the 1950s that house was razed to erect the Federated Church on West State Street. In DeKalb the homes were the Ellwood House and the Glidden Home. Those structures were erected by the men that combined to invent a form of that was consumed across the Midwest and Great Plains states in the late 1800s. In Belvidere the Woodruff House was one of the finest hospitality destinations in the city in the later 1800s. C.W. Woodruff erected that house and newspapers of that day claimed that he came to Belvidere in the middle 1860s. The legend had it that he left Pennsylvania, in part, as a result of the Civil War, and migrated west to find the developing village of Belvidere. Perhaps Belvidere reminded him of where he left in southeast Pennsylvania and legend had it that he was a host with rooms available in a town adjacent to Gettysburg Pennsylvania in New Oxford. During a horrific weekend in 1863 the primary fighting there ran from July 1 through July 3. When the armies abandoned the area, the fighting continue in the four directions. New Oxford did not escape destruction. Perhaps the options looked far safer in Belvidere for C.W. Woodruff than to remain so near the War. He sold his possessions and real property to the first buyer, loaded his family in a wagon and left town. He wanted to create a home in Belvidere that was wholly own use. during what was called the Baroque Period that was popular different from any other structure. This effort was designed, according to reports, to discover if greater levels of diversity could be found through evaluation of current policy to expand minority ownership, involvement in the production and the dissemination of the news. The investigation was planned to be headed by two notable universities. The Annenberg School for Est. 1996 Est. 1996 communication and journalism at the University of Southern California and the center for communication and journalism at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Both schools were asked by the FCC to establish criteria regarding how the study would be conducted. Real Journalism For A Real Democracy What is perhaps of greatest concern of the study is the politicized nature of how the study would be conducted. According to the Washington Post, groups under the direction of Soros contributed from 2000 to 2012 to the Publisher David C. Larson University of Wisconsin more than $1.672 million. This element alone tends to cast a politicized and biased gloss Editor James Middleton over the effort, not unlike if Mitt Romney or one of his entities wanted to fund a similar effort under a Republican administration. Design/Layout Ted Staniec The one person opposing this effort is a current commissioner of the FCC, Ajit Pai. He wrote an Op-Ed piece Design/Advertising Dena Roethler in the Wall Street Journal, February 10 that was critical of the politicized motivation. He wrote, “The government has no place pressuring media organizations to cover certain stories.” Advertising Bethany Staniec According to information obtained from USC and the University of Wisconsin, their investigators would meet Reporter Lisa Rodgers reporters, editors and station owners to find out how they decide what stories to run. Under the direction of the Reporter Ronnie Thompson FCC, these university investigators would try to understand the motivations for how news is produced. According to Mr. Pai, the political motivation of the effort becomes even murkier when he disclosed the critical Photography Susan Moran information to be studied included the environment and economic opportunities, to name two. The study also Richelle Kingsbury Aug. 1955 - June 2013 sought to have news directors and editors disclose their “news philosophy.” Investigators could also probe to find how a news outlet will ensure that the community obtains “critical information.” Letters to the Editor Policy: Every attempt will be However, what is most disconcerting is the deafening silence of major news outlets. OBITUARIES It would be welcomed if media outlets other than the Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal would have written of this study to offer their opinion. Many of the major media outlets should have led the effort to stop this study. However, because of their collective silence, a cynical man might claim that the study was as much a political statement as was the effort to stop the study. With the flip of the calendar each day, our daylight is becoming increasingly longer. But what was that? Could it be a robin singing? Were my ears deceiving me? John Todt is a Board Member on the Boone County Conservation District, a volunteer who does breeding bird studies in district Conservation Areas. He also serves as the Boone County Compiler for the Statewide Spring Bird Count on the second Saturday in May. John said, “The American Robin, ‘Turdus Migratorius,’ is now being heard in the mornings. The songs of the male robin announce the beginnings of territorial display and defense. The mating pairs select their nesting territory and warn other robins away with their songs and threat displays.” He also said, “The robin can be seen in the area year round, but they leave their nesting territory (your yard) and form roving flocks in the fall. Flocks of robins move further south for winter and flocks from northern habitats move this far south. During winter, when insects are scarce, the robins will eat berries still hanging on area trees and shrubs.” John added, “The robin’s songs vary according to the situation. If it is singing the robin mating song that is melodic with notes up and down the scale with assorted trills and quite flutelike, it is attracting its mate and warning continued to page...9 www.boonecountyjournal.com In Our 18th Year 815-544-4430 The Boone County Journal Feb.28th., 2014 9 E lect B rad Stark Boone County Board District 3 4 Year Term - Protect private property rights -Responsible Representation -Business experience -Conservative values P aid for by Citizens to Elect Brad Stark continued from page...8 other robins to avoid its nesting territory.” The female robin builds her nest of mud reinforced with grass, twigs, and fibers. She lines the nest with soft grasses and then lays from three to five blue-green eggs. Young are fed a diet of insects and worms that are high in protein to support the needed rapid growth. For birds eating seed from winter feeders, the feeder must be taken down when nesting begins. Chickadees, for instance, would feed the easily obtained seed to their young and they would fail to grow properly. John also sad, “If anyone would like to participate in the walks or in the spring count, call the Boone County Conservation District Office at 815-547-7935. If you want to participate in the spring count, prepare to be in the field for a minimum of eight hours. It is an intense, but fun, event. All birds reported need to be verified by two observers. Results are sent to IDNR and published.” Journey North engages citizen scientists in a global study of wildlife migration and seasonal change. Journey North is presented by Annenberg Learner. http://www.learner. org/jnorth/. Journey North provides maps, the ability to participate and report sightings, a check list for observation as well as other information. Migration information may be found on many other subjects such as Loons, Humming Birds, Grey Whales, Monarch Butterflies as well as signs of spring such as Earthworms and Tulips. The update for February 25 for the American Robin migration had, “March is the month of peak robin migration. The map shows more waves of robins (groups of from three to hundreds) and a few more first robins in the north. Robins are distributed across a large part of their range and robins are getting nosier as daylight increases and hormone levels rise: ‘Lots of singing and eating this morning. It sounds like spring!” Spring 2014 appears to be moving forward with a slow crescendo as we patiently wait for the temperatures to rise to melt the winter snow and ice. Each day is anticipation that spring will once again reveal the beautiful frozen life that waits beneath. “Spring has come and joyfully the birds greet it with happy song, and the brooks, while the streams flow along with gentle murmur as the zephyrs blow. There come, shrouding the air with a black cloak, lighting and thunder chosen to herald [the storm]; then, when these are silent, the little birds return to their melodious incantations. And now, in the pleasant, flowery meadow, to the soft murmur of leaves and plants, the goatherd sleeps with his faithful dog at his side. To the festive sound of a pastoral bagpipe, nymphs and shepherds dance under their beloved roof, greeting the glittering arrival of the spring.” Concerto No. 1 in E Major, Allegro / Largo / Allegro (Pastorale dance) Vivaldi’s Four Seasons: Spring - Sonnet Text. http://www.baroquemusic.org/vivaldiseasons.html http://classicalmusic.about.com/od/baroqueperiod/ss/ fourseasons_2.htm http://classicalmusic.about.com/od/baroqueperiod/ss/ fourseasons_5.htm http://www.learner.org/jnorth/robin/spring2014/update022514. html
