Explore the Glacial Geology of ’s Northwoods September 8 - 8:00AM - 4:00PM Register Campanile Center for the Arts 141 Street Minocqua, WI 54548

Cost: $30

Event content: A field trip presented by Science on Tap–Minocqua Wisconsin’s Northern Highland Ecological Landscape formed during the last ice age from multiple glaciations. This resulted in the incredible density of lakes and rich forest tapestry that draws tens of thousands of tourist to the area every year. Join us as we bring together two experts in soils and glacial geology of the Northern Highlands to explore the interplay between the glacial geology, soils and forest ecology of the Northern Highlands. Learn about the glacial geology and soils of Northern Wisconsin. It promises to be a stimulating day. Capacity is limited — register today! Stops include:

• Hardwood Forests formed on soils developed on drumlins- • Jake Pine Forests formed in sandy outwash- • Hemlock and wetland soils formed where multiple glaciations resulted in rugged topography • Glacial geological formations

Our experts will be on hand to answer questions about the landscape development over the last ice age, soil development since then, and the interplay between these and the forest today.

Elmo Rawling, Ph.D is a Geologist with the UW-Extension-Wisconsin Geological & Natural History Survey. Dr. Rawling’s research focuses on the history of glaciation in Wisconsin and its effects on the state’s land forms and topography. Dr. Rawling is also interested in the geology of the sand dunes, beaches and past lake levels along Lake . He and his colleagues at the Survey have recently completed a map of the glacial deposits of Oneida county utilizing new high-resolution topographic data.

Nick Balster , Ph.D is an Associate Professor at the University of Wisconsin- Madison in the Department of Soil Science. Dr. Balster studies the interactions between plants and soils and the factors controlling soil fertility. Dr. Balster examines soils in diverse systems from forest communities to prairies to restorations in both “natural” and urbanized landscapes.
