Help End the Misery! Goldilocks & The Three Chairs First Tuesday, January 6, 2015- Stay tuned!

You Said Our Crappy Seats Were Sending You to the Chiropractor!

We want to fix this audience-crippling problem with new chairs. With hats off to Jay Ward’s Fractured Fairy Tales (Rocky & Bullwinkle, remember them?) Jan Halliday wrote “Goldilocks & The Three Chairs,” Janette Force did the voice over at KPTZ’s sound studio and graphic artist Terry Tennesen drew and animated it. You got the printed story in your snail mail last week. See Terry’s 1.5 minute cartoon (with music and sound effects!) here.

Make your contribution before New Year’s Day to PayPal on our Website, and your gift puts your name in the hat to win a Festival Pass or a Director Pass with Concierge Service! And next Festival, you’ll sit in the Best Seat in the House.

First Tuesday January 6, 2015–Stay tuned!

Many incredible films open in the next few weeks, so we’re waiting to choose which one to select for our First Tuesday Salon. Remember, with your membership card you get a $1 off admission and 50 cents off your bag of popcorn. Watch your mailbox for the winner of the Goldilocks & the 3 Chairs Drawing and find out which film will be our subject for First Tuesday Salon.

Glad tidings, the days are getting longer already!

First Tuesday Salon Dec 2nd Thanks to guest host, Rocky Friedman & Scott Wilson present Citizenfour Starlight Room, 7:30pm

Tuesday evening will be an important conversation with local journalist Scott Wilson, following the screening of Citizenfour. Film critic John Beifuss writes, “Whether you consider Snowden a traitor or hero or something in between, the movie is striking in its immediacy and access and terrifying in its implications. It truly is a document capturing meetings of tremendous historical significance.

“Citizenfour” (the reference is to a Snowden code name) is unapologetically sympathetic to the then 29-year-old Snowden, a bespectacled and boyishly lanky former CIA employee and private “infrastructure analyst.” PTFF embraces the ‘salon’ model as the ongoing opportunity to have a dialog inspired by the common experience that film makes available. In the case of Citizenfour we all have the opportunity to explore the role of journalism and personal ethics as they collide with national security. Enjoy the this season of gratitude, share what you have with your neighbors and be glad,

Dreaming of 2015 festival and a winter film series,

Robert Horton Special Event Sunday 11/9 The Rose 1pm Bruce Hattendorf introduces Out of Past 11/19 at the Starlight Room Holiday Shopping Made Simple- Film Festival Passes!

Frankenstein (1931): A Special Event with Robert Horton Sun, 11/9 @1:00

Join us on Sunday afternoon at 1pm to explore the mythology around the classic story of Frankenstein. Winner of the 2014 Spirit of the Port Townsend Film Festival, Robert Horton will talk a bout and sign copies of his new book "Frankenstein" (Columbia University Press) following a screening of James Whale's classic 1931 film.

Why do we care so much about this tale of remaking humanity in our own imperfect image? Mr. Horton will offer an in-depth critical reading and discuss the way this cinematic Prometheus has generated countless sequels, remakes, rip-offs and parodies. From Mary Shelley's source novel to the dubious I Was a Teenage Frankenstein, the mythology surrounding the story remains a powerful one even today. All tickets $10.

Out of Past Wednesday 11/19 at the Starlight Room 7:30p

Film scholar Bruce Hattendorf, Associate Dean of Arts & Sciences, Peninsula College, has a stack of books based on this film. His introduction makes this event a sure sell out. “Out of the Past” is a crystal-clear beauty in black and white and every shade in between – a scale that also could be applied to the morals of the characters onscreen. Arguably the quintessential film noir, “Out of the Past” stars Robert Mitchum as a weary and wary private eye living incognito as a gas jockey in bucolic Small Town USA; his idyll is interrupted when he is pulled back into an old case involving a predatory gambler (Kirk Douglas), a femme fatale (Jane Greer) and a missing cache of cash. All tickets $12. Not rated, 97 min. 1947 Holiday Shopping Made Simple- Film Festival Passes!

First Tuesday Salon Nov. 4th My Old Lady @ The Starlight Room 7:15p Want to get more involved with PTFF? 2014 Festival Films arrive in the PTFF library on Nov. 3rd

“ A love letter to Paris!” is what Rocky calls My Old Lady, our First Tuesday Salon film on November 4th. So, what better guest for the salon conversation following than Gwen Evans, local fashionista and curator of Paris Found tours? Enjoy an evening of Maggie Smith and Kevin Cline (seen here with a drinking buddy), then lets chat about landlords in Paris, and the marvels that can be discovered in this incredible city. Learn about Gwen’s ongoing travel adventures HERE. And watch the trailer HERE. Remember that The Starlight Room has only 45 seats, you may want to plan your evening before Tuesday.

Want to get more involved with PTFF?

Here are some immediate paths: • PTFF is in need of some dry storage space for 8 wooden stage platforms & 4 panels • Film Review- in January 2015, filmmakers begin to submit their work for consideration for our festival in September. Each and every film (there are HUNDREDS) that comes to us is screened by at least two different folks. If you are interested in joining this team of 18, you will need:

o High speed internet connection and email o 3-5 hrs per week in January-March, with increased need in April and May. o One evening meeting per month with fellow reviewers o Still interested? Email: [email protected] Send us a list of your 3 favorite films & why you love them. If you have reviewed for us before, please reapply! o All of your hours of reviewing qualify as Volunteer Hours!

2014 Festival Films arrive in the PTFF library on Nov. 3rd

Thanks to the hard work of Lili the Librarian and our tech crew, we are about to fill these empty shelves with some of the treasures from our 15th year celebrating independent cinema. Stop by and don’t forget your membership card, the one that indicates you have library privileges- or purchase a pass to the 2015 festival and get yourself a fresh new card.

Any time we can see a film and meet the filmmaker, the audience has the opportunity to understand the material in a much deeper way. PTFF is so pleased to help The Food Co-op get the word out about Steve Alves, creator of this really insightful history of the Co-ops in America. What a great way to celebrate Co-op Month!

See you at the movies,

First Tuesday August 5th “I, Origins” with guest Bruce Bode (Check the Rose Theatre for times & location)

Marc Mohan of “the Oregonian” writes, "I Origins" has lofty ambitions, among them the reconciliation of secular and faith-based ways of looking at the world, explaining déjà vu, and convincing us that the eyes are quite literally the window to the soul. To get there, director Mike Cahill needs to elicit some pretty significant suspensions of disbelief.” To explore this idea of reconciliation, our Guest for the evening will be Bruce Bode, from the Quimper Unitarian Universalist Fellowship. Join us for a conversation about coincidence and magical thinking- and the mystery of faith and fate.

Demystifying our Clues

Clue #1: A wordsmith, a storyteller, acting and directing as well, noveling with noble themes, fierce challenges to social dreams. Myth and magic can, too, prevail, In wondrous weaving of these tales. Cross dabbling from film to rock, what springs to mind made fans gawk.

(John Sayles is an author as well as an actor, director, editor and screenwriter. Predominantly, his stories are character-driven plots with a social consciousness. Myth refers to The Secret of Roan Inish and magic to The Spiderwick Chronicles. Lastly, a reference to the collaboration with Bruce Springsteen (springs to mind) in three rock videos).

Clue #2: To howl the challenge, wild war hopes, unnatural passion with sunshine gropes. Seven, eight, wild silver mother, sweet limbo sister, bear's secret brother, the stars are two, the match is strange three toes, last minute change. And now within these rhymes it's you with all these eggs, baby, what is true?

(This is a play on words from titles of his work along with a reference to the three toed character in The Brother from Another Planet and a line from Return of the Secaucus Seven (what are we going to do with all the eggs?) Following lines refer to Passion Fish, Clan of the Cave Bear, and others).

Clue #3: One final clue to uncover: Both are coming with their lover. Many folks have his name right, but with whom does he spend the night? In Williamstown, sweet love begun, and now for forty years has run. Producer, actress, collaborator-- What love, what passion could be greater?

(In the early 70’s, John Sayles met his lifelong partner and creative collaborator, Maggie Renzi, at Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts. Her talents are evidenced in more than two dozen films with acting and production credits including Passion Fish (referenced on “what passion could be greater?”)

Congrats to our Guess the Guest Contest winner, Sequim resident, Cindy McClain. She has never attended our film festival and discovered the contest by accident. The clues were so interesting, she just dove in, she said. Eventually, 28 people figured out our cinematic mystery, but Cindy was the first. She receives a T-shirt, PTFF hat and a photo op with Maggie and John!

First Tuesday Salon, Words and Pictures, Starlight Room, July 1, 7:30 pm

Join us at the Starlight Room to see Words and Pictures. A discussion follows with local painter and writer, Rikki DuCornet. The film, says The New York Times, “has a host of flaws, but the performances by Mr. Owen and Ms. Binoche have a crackling vitality, and the screenplay’s strongest moments set off the kind of trains of thought that dedicated teachers hope to spur in their students. Cantankerous though these two teachers can be, you would be lucky to have them in your classroom.” “Clive Owen and Juliette Binoche,” says Entertainment Weekly, have a great Hepburn/Tracy rapport."

June 10, 2014 Filmmaker Fellowship Welcomes Two Artists on July 1st Opportunity for Film Intern on Documentary project Clue #2 for Guess the Guest Volunteer Applications should be submitted now if you have a favorite venue!

Welcome Ali Bombach & Mo Scarpelli, our upcoming Filmmaker Fellows! PTFF will be hosting selected filmmakers for a residency program, allowing them to complete a project, imagine a new film or simply recharge artistic batteries. The Film Fellowship Program reflects the ever-deepening commitment for PTFF to enhance the connection with audiences and filmmakers. What better way to support independent film than to share what PTFF is legendary for - hospitality!

Ali & Mo will be residing in a beautiful apartment overlooking Water St. while they complete post production work on their feature documentary, FRAME BY FRAME. This trailer captures the spirit of a film PTFF is proud to support: HERE.

Film Internship:

Writes the team from FRAME BY FRAME: “Now, we’re seeking an intern to join our post-production team from July to September. This is an opportunity to see the behind the scenes of a feature-length documentary – an invaluable experience for someone just starting out. The film is at a very exciting point where we are developing ideas for independent distribution, an outreach campaign, and (most importantly) crafting the arc of the story.

Ideally, this person would be in Port Townsend! If you know of anyone that may be a fit, could you please send them this link to our questionnaire? (HERE).

We hope to find a good fit and have them up and running by the time we get there.

And by the end, we dance with her, living in the moment as she does, not looking ahead to life’s next turn.”

First Tuesday Salon Feb 4th INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS @The Rose Theatre 7:30p with Special Guest songwriter Simon Lynge! Celebrate Oscar© Film and Philanthropy on March 2nd “The Envelope Please…”

Not a davis

comedy, not a tragedy- no, it’s the life of a folk musician! Critics are struggling to describe the latest marvel from the Coen Brothers: “Hilarious in the Coens' weird, askew way, but also absolutely crushing. This movie breaks my heart in a hundred different ways, ” Mary Ann Johansen says on her film blog. Bill Goodykoontz writes “This is one of the strangest yet most satisfying movie experiences of the year, one of those films in which you can't really appreciate what you've seen until it's over. You just have to trust that the trip is worth the trouble. And it is.” Click HERE to view the trailer.

And as we see in the film, the journey of a folk singer is not for the faint of heart. So let’s talk with international singer songwriter Simon Lynge about his own path from the mountains of Greenland to the international stage and then to his life in Port Townsend with his family. The choices that face all artists are the stuff of legend- in poetry, song, sculpture and symphony. What are the moments that define a career and that forever alter the direction in which we believe we are headed?

Join PTFF Director Janette Force as she invites Simon to take us on the road as singer songwriter in the 21st century. He wasn’t around Greenwich Village in the 1960’s, but there are clearly some common elements. (hint- no icebergs in Greenwich Village, no subways in Greenland). To learn more about Simon’s latest project and hear some of his music, click HERE.

A special advance test screening of Port Townsend filmmaker Ward Serrill's story of one man's quest to integrate modern science and ancient mysticism through sound. A test screening allows a director to gain perspective and feedback on a film as it is being edited in it’s final stages. Following the film, the audience will be encouraged to provide their insight, for the director’s benefit.

The film features the extraordinary life and work of country singer turned brain researcher and shaman of sound, Tom Kenyon, as he journeys from his homeland in Washington state to: the stage on Broadway, giant caves in the south of France, the golden-chandeliered symphony halls of Vienna and finally to the snowy peaks of Tibet. Admission is free but you must RSVP HERE.

Special Screening January 3-4-5 BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOR First Tuesday Salon January 7th NEBRASKA ~ 7:45pm Startlight Room ACROSS THE UNIVERSE Sing A Long January 25th with Costumes, Prizes and Cocktails for the 10pm show

Special Screening January 3-4-5 BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOR You must be 18 or older to attend these special screenings of BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOR at The Rose Theatre because of explicit sexual content. The nearly 3 hr film opens at 9:10pm Friday & Saturday evenings plus a Sunday matinee at noon. Says The Detroit News: “It is much more than a romantic film- it explores the spectrum of romance — flirtation, discovery, lust, domesticity, cooling, longing, betrayal, break-up and the grave aching of love lost. It’s built around an extraordinary performance by then 18-year-old Adèle Exarchopoulos, She brings exuberance and passion to the role, as well as innocent-yet-fiery sensuality, but she also keeps Adèle grounded and vulnerable. And can she own a screen! It’s a brilliant performance in an astounding, complex film about the ecstasy, the danger and the beauty of love.”

Rocky Friedman sums it up simply, “It is SO damn French!”

First Tuesday Salon January 7th NEBRASKA 7:45pm Statlight Room

With all the Oscar buzz about this film, it is even more satisfying to recall when Bruce Dern was our guest for the 12th Annual PT Film Festival. When he left us that September, he was headed straight to the location to begin shooting with Alexander Payne.

Please join us on Tuesday evening at 7:45p for a conversation following this “performance of a lifetime” by our PTFF alum. Bruce speaks highly of his time with us and when he was premiering the film at Sundance last January, he sent his greetings to all of us, thanks to Jane Julian, PTFF programmer who was there for the opening. Thanks, also, to Bob Rosen current legend in Quilcene, who worked with Bruce in Hollywood and convinced him that our festival was worth the trip. Sorry, Bob Rosen will not be joining us for First Tuesday, as he is celebrating his 40th birthday! Happy Birthday Mr. Rosen!!

Starlight Room has only 45 seats, so plan to arrive early for this event or buy your tickets HERE. Watch the trailer HERE.

And our friend at the Kitsap Sun, Michael Moore, shared this insight on the film, Dern and what art contributes to our understanding of ourselves - HERE.

Wonderful insight, Michael!
