Filipino paramedic dies of MERS in UAE

ABU DHABI: The United Arab Emirates yesterday announced that one of six Filipino paramedics in the UAE who have been infected by the MERS coronavirus had died from the respiratory disease. The UAE interior ministry said the six staff members worked at the Al Ain Rescue and Ambulance Section in Abu Dhabi. The ministry “has taken all necessary pre- ventive health measures by placing the patients under quarantine,” it said in a statement, with- out specifying when the paramedic died. It also urged people who have been transferred lately to hospitals to check on their condition, as a precautionary move. US will not give visa to Iran pick for UN post WASHINGTON: The United States denied a visa to Iran’s proposed UN ambassador yes- terday, citing the envoy’s links to the 1979- 1981 Iranian hostage crisis. President Barack Obama had come under strong pressure not to allow Hamid Abutalebi into the country to take up his position in New York. White House spokesman Jay Carney said the United Nations and Iran had been told “that we will not issue a visa to Mr. Abutalebi.” US law allows the government to bar UN diplomats who are considered national security threats, but Obama’s step could open the United States to criticism that it is using its position as host nation improperly. Three Brotherhood men ONLINE killed in violence CAIRO: Two members of the Muslim Brotherhood were killed in an exchange of gunfire with Egyptian security forces in the Nile Delta yesterday, the Interior Ministry said, and the Islamist group said another of its supporters was shot dead in Alexandria. Egypt’s Interior Ministry said the Nile Delta shootout began when Brotherhood activists on motorbikes were spotted attempting to set BATTLE alight a police checkpoint on a road between the cities of Tanta and Al Mahalla Al Kubra north of Cairo.
