Bearing in mind that Distorted Humor's fee has risen from $10,000 to $300,000 in the space of seven years, I can't help wondering what the future might have held for End Sweep had he not been exported after the 1999 season. After all, End Sweep, like Distorted Humor, was sired by from a graded-winning granddaughter of . And, like Distorted Humor, he was placed in both the GI Jerome H. and GII King's Bishop S. In the process, End Sweep, like Distorted Humor, showed more speed than stamina, notably winning the Highlander H., GIII Jersey Shore Breeders= Cup S. and the Kentucky Cup Sprint. One difference between these similar sons of Forty Niner was that, unlike Distorted Humor, End Sweep didn't start his stallion career in Kentucky. Instead he commenced stallion duties at the age of four in 1995 at Harry T Mangurian Jr's Mockingbird Farm in Florida. Apparently the original intention was for End Sweep to stay in training after the age of three, in a bid to add to his reputation in much the same way that Distorted Humor was later to do. Unfortunately Mockingbird lost Copelan, one of its leading stallions, in October 1994 and End Sweep was retired prematurely to fill the void. However, he had already had plenty of opportunities to display his talents, as he had faced the starter six times as a juvenile and on another 10 occasions at three. He failed to reach the first three only once in those 16 starts. Mr. Prospector-line sires Mr. Greeley (Gone West) and Kingmambo (Mr. Prospector) really share the honors on this list: Mr. Greeley (9.46 European A Runner Index), of course, because almost 19% of his European year-starters 2001-2007 became A Runners (top-2% earners); and Kingmambo (4.12) because he has a tremendous record in Europe from 437 year-starters, the most of any sire in this top 25. The $4,000 KEEJAN yearling did it easily, though, rallying from a stalking position to prevail by 5 1/2 lengths. Far Out Chick (Power By Far) ran second. R Tonto’s Girl is a half-sister to the juvenile filly Swifty Victress (Macho Uno), MSW, $160,887. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $21,000. O-First Light Farm. B-Adena Springs (FL). T-Frank C Petrozzo.

ROCKIN INTHE RAIN (f, 2, Storm Boot--Rockley, by Miner's Mark), a $20,000 KEESEP yearling who pro- gressed into a $165,000 FTMMAY juvenile, was sup- ported as the 8-5 chalk on debut at Belmont Sept. 16, but faltered badly and was beaten double-digit lengths. The dark bay worked very well following that one and was once again the crowd’s choice, going postward here at 3-2 odds under jockey Elvis Trujillo. Off a step slowly, she was soon pressing the pacesetter through :23 and :46 4/5 splits, drew off, then held the late rally of Lethal Quality (Elusive Quality) by a length. Wintergreen Makes KEEP Pledge: The Greely family’s Wintergreen Stallion Station has pledged to donate 10 percent of all seasons sold by the farm from Dec. 3 through Dec. 17. “KEEP is valuable not just to Kentucky, but to the Thoroughbred industry as a whole,” explained John J. Greely IV. “Even if someone buys a season from outside Kentucky during this time period, they are still supporting the Thorough- bred industry. A healthy horse business in Kentucky benefits us all.” The six stallions standing at Winter- green are: Ecton Park, Honour and Glory, Five Star Day, Century City (Ire), Pollard’s Vision and Borrego. “KEEP is taking a leadership role in educating voters leading up to the November, 2008 election to the benefits of casino-style gambling to the state of Kentucky,” Greely continued. “KEEP is depending on those of us in the industry to help support this large task.”
