BECOMING FRUITFUL AND EFFECTIVE INSTRUMENTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

We have too many people in charismatic renewal that do not come to training sessions. They are not very mature in the Holy Spirit and in their ministerial skills and gifts. They are not as fruitful and effective as they could be, if they would continue to seek training.

A is someone who is always seeking to learn and grow. For those of you who attended my teaching session at CCCR in May, you heard about Francis’ encouragement that Baptism in the Holy Spirit and the charisms are meant for the whole Church. He has started CHARIS, as an international service organism, to promote Baptism in the Spirit and the charisms in the whole Church as a public juridical personality serving within the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life (a department within the Roman Curia).

We need to learn how to better explain this ‘current of grace,” charismatic renewal, to our priests and to all those in the , and all those the Lord is calling us to evangelize.

We will be offering 3 training sessions in English this Fall. Fr. Bob, Dan Dúet, and members of the English Service Committee will be leading these sessions. This is a very important time of grace that we do not want to miss, so I ask you to strongly encourage your prayer group members to attend these 3 sessions on the theme:

“BE PREPARED: THE HOLY SPIRIT IS ON THE MOVE!”

September 7, 2019 from 10am to 2pm at CCCR: An Exciting Time for Charismatic Renewal, Are You Ready for It (CHARIS, Archdiocese, etc.).

September 28, 2019 from 10am to 2pm at CCCR: Baptism in the Holy Spirit for All Catholics: Life in the Spirit Seminars and More!

October 5, 2019 from 10am to 2pm at CCCR: Evangelization with a Heart of Compassion and Service, Empowered by Gifts of the Spirit.

We need all of you to get involved, and promote, this very special time of grace. Come and bring someone with you to these sessions. Bring a bag lunch. We will provide drinks.

As noted above, these training sessions will be conducted in English.

September 2019 - Page 2 Back to the Basics

As Fr. Bob says on Page 2, “We need to learn how to better explain this ‘current of grace,’ charismatic renewal, to our priests and to all those in the Catholic Church, and all those the Lord is calling us to evangelize. We will be explaining teaching throughout the Archdiocese.” To that end we will be publishing Chapter 6 of his book, “Celebrating a Charismatic Jubilee”, over the next few issues as one means to help us be better prepared. Enjoy! - Dan Dúet, Asst. Director

(continued from last month)

Early Church The writings of the early Church Fathers confirm that the gift of the Spirit imparted in the Sacraments of Initiation was expected to be an experienced reality with signs of the Spirit’s presence and the manifestation of charisms. Here are two examples. St. of Carthage (d. 258) writes:

“I went down into those life-giving waters, and all the stains of my past were washed away. I committed my life to the Lord; he cleansed my heart and filled me with the Holy Spirit. I was born again, a new man. Then in a most marvelous way all my doubts cleared up. I could now see what had been hidden from me before. I found that I could do things that had previously been impossible… We do not have to toil and sweat to achieve our own perfection, nor are money and influence needed to obtain the gift of the Holy Spirit. It is freely given to us by God, always available for us to use” (p 53-54).

St. (c. 300-368) writes: “We who have been reborn through the sacrament of baptism experience intense joy when we feel within us the first stirrings of the Holy Spirit. We begin to have insights into the mysteries of the faith; we are able to prophesy and speak with wisdom. We become steadfast in hope and receive abundant gifts of healing. Demons are made subject to our authority. These gifts enter us like gentle rain, and… little by little, they bear abundant fruit” (pp55-56).

Characteristic Features The experience of being baptized in the Spirit in the Catholic Charismatic Renewal has shown similar manifestations and effects. The characteristic features of baptism in the Spirit include (pp16-26):

● A new awareness of the reality and presence of the Triune God: A greater sense of communion with God and consciousness of the presence and power of the Spirit.

● Power for sanctification: A newfound authority to resist temptation; freedom from deep-rooted patterns of sin; and the healing of relationships.

● Praise and worship: A joyful desire to praise, honor and worship God.

● Rediscovery of prayer, scripture, and the sacraments: A new thirst to encounter God through these means; prayer becomes more from the heart; scripture comes alive; new awareness of Christ’s presence and power in the liturgy.

● A new love for the Church, Mary and the : Often a new closeness to Mary, the spouse of the Spirit; greater desire to be rooted in all that the Church teaches and the role of the pope and bishops.

● Charisms (spiritual gifts): A new openness to be empowered by charisms for evangelization and the “building up” of the Church (I Corinthians 14:4).

● Healing and deliverance: Charisms of healing and prayer for healing have become more common among the laity.

● Mobilization of the laity: This Renewal has made a major contribution to the participation of the laity in the mission of the Church, which encouraged the Second Vatican Council.

Fr. Richard Samour, Pastor of St. Clare Parish, contacted the CCCR with a desire to offer the ‘Life in the Spirit Seminar’ to his parishioners in both English and Spanish. The English portion was led by Fr. Bob Hogan, BBD, while the Spanish portion was led by Sylvia Lopez, the Chair of the Spanish Service Committee. Pictures from the English portion are below and from the Spanish are on the next page. Thank you to all the volunteers who assisted!!

● Evangelization: A new desire to spread the good news of . Many evangelizing ministries and training programs have been birthed through the Charismatic Renewal.

● Commitment to social justice: A strong involvement in pro-life activities and efforts at outreach to the poor. These services usually combine a care for physical needs with the sharing of the .

● Ecumenical impetus: The beginnings of Catholic Charismatic Renewal was influenced by Protestant Pentecostals who had received the grace of baptism in the Spirit. There is a strong impulse in the Movement for working toward Christian unity according to Catholic principles.

● New communities: Formation of new communities often called covenant communities; both Catholic communities and ecumenical communities. In 1990 the Catholic Fraternity of Charismatic Covenant Communities and Fellowships was inaugurated, and was given official recognition by the Vatican (pontifical status). (to be continued in next month’s issue)

BREAKING NEWS!!! CCCR now has a Publicity Coordinator!! Long-time CCR Leader, Karen , has graciously agreed to serve in a new capacity for the SA Renewal, using her gifts and talents in an area we have long needed: Publicity Coordinator.

This new effort will consolidate and coordinate all the good news and information regarding the Center and the prayer groups, Karen’s primary role will be to take the information about what is going on in the Center and the news reports from the prayer groups and coordinate publication of this information in the Charisletter, the Center’s website, social media, and the emails distributed by the Center. In this way we hope to create a cohesive means of communicating on a variety of platforms to get the word out to prayer group members and the public.

We ask for someone in your prayer group to volunteer to capture prophetic words, instances of healing, powerful testimonies, or upcoming events on a monthly basis. Feel free to include photos of praise and worship or the persons who are healed or give a powerful testimony. Send your reports to Karen Adams at [email protected] not later than the 1st of each month to be in the next issue of the Charisletter. Thank you, Karen!
