LONG-SHOT VICTORIES — The Republican Party of East Baton Rouge, which is governed by the East Baton Rouge Republican Parish Executive Committee, has had some sur- prising victories the past two years. The PEC endorsed Scott Angelle (left) for Public Service Commission, which gave Angelle an unexpected base of support in East Baton Rouge. In the Supreme Court race, the PEC endorsed conservative Court of Appeal judge Jeff Hughes (center), who was elected. Hughes is the first Republican in history to be elected to the Supreme Court from the Baton Rouge area. His election gave Republicans a 4-3 majority on the court. As a judge from Livingston Parish, Hughes needed help in East Baton Rouge Parish, which the PEC endorsement provided. In a special election for State Representative, the PEC had trouble deciding whether to support Barry Ivey (3rd from left) or Scott Wilson (right) or both. Ultimately, they endorsed Barry Ivey. Both Hughes and Ivey have said the endorsements were critical to their victories.
