  • Disability and Music
th nd 19 November to 22 December UKDHM 2018 will focus on Disability and Music. We want to explore the links between the experience of disablement in a world where the barriers faced by people with impairments can be overwhelming. Yet the creative impulse, urge for self expression and the need to connect to our fellow human beings often ‘trumps’ the oppression we as disabled people have faced, do face and will face in the future. Each culture and sub-culture creates identity and defines itself by its music. ‘Music is the language of the soul. To express ourselves we have to be vibrating, radiating human beings!’ Alasdair Fraser. Born in Salford in 1952, polio survivor Alan Holdsworth goes by the stage name ‘Johnny Crescendo’. His music addresses civil rights, disability pride and social injustices, making him a crucial voice of the movement and one of the best-loved performers on the disability arts circuit. In 1990 and 1992, Alan co- organised Block Telethon, a high-profile media and community campaign which culminated in the demise of the televised fundraiser. His albums included Easy Money, Pride and Not Dead Yet, all of which celebrate disabled identity and critique disabling barriers and attitudes. He is best known for his song Choices and Rights, which became the anthem for the disabled people’s movement in Britain in the late 1980s and includes the powerful lyrics: Choices and Right That’s what we gotta fight for Choices and rights in our lives I don’t want your benefit I want dignity from where I sit I want choices and rights in our lives I don’t want you to speak for me I got my own autonomy I want choices and rights in our lives https://youtu.be/yU8344cQy5g?t=14 The polio virus attacked the nerves.

  • Be My Baby”—The Ronettes (1963) Added to the National Registry: 2006 Essay by Cary O’Dell
“Be My Baby”—The Ronettes (1963) Added to the National Registry: 2006 Essay by Cary O’Dell The Ronettes Original label Phil Spector Instantly infectious and memorable, “Be My Baby” has been described as the “Record of the Century” and the “greatest pop record ever made.” It was recorded by the Ronettes in 1963. It was written by Phil Spector, Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich and was produced by Phil Spector. It was named to the National Recording Registry in 2006. The Ronettes were a group of girls from Spanish Harlem, sisters Veronica (“Ronnie”) and Estelle Bennett and their cousin Nedra Talley. Before becoming a trio, the young women were a group of five joined by two other cousins, Elaine and Diane. (Sometimes they were also joined by their male cousin, Ira.) They sang together and perfected their harmonies at their grandmother’s house before branching out to play local dances and talent contests. Along with refining their line-up and sound, the girls also defined their look. In his biography of Phil Spector, author Mick Brown says of the group: The standard demeanor of girl groups of the day was one of demure innocence…But the Ronettes looked as if it was a Saturday night and they were cruising for trouble—figure- hugging dresses, hair piled into improbable beehives and lashings of mascara, which transformed the youthful high school girls into vamps. Today, the Ronettes are nearly as remembered for their look (which would later be largely carbon-copied by Amy Winehouse) as for their sound. After first being signed by and recording for the Colpix label (under the name Ronnie and the Relatives), the Ronettes came to the attention of Phil Spector who immediately took a liking to the group and especially to its de facto leader Ronnie.

  • Carol Connors, Who Co-Wrote the Song with Bill Conti and Ayn Robbins
RUNWAY Exclusive It’s an image burned into the world’s collective conscious: a lone man, dressed in grey sweatshirt and pants, running through Philadelphia and up the steps of the art museum. He’s no thief in the night – he’s “Rocky Balboa”. And the song he celebrates to at the top of the stairs, Gonna Fly Now, also known as the Theme to Rocky, is one of the most recognized songs in the world. So well known and beloved, in fact, that it’s been used in many places since Rocky appeared in 1976, including scenes in television and films like The Fresh Prince of Bel Aire and You Don’t Mess With the Zohan, at Philadelphia Eagles sporting events, and even as a U.S. presidential campaign song. Gonna Fly Now was also nominated for an Academy Award in 1977 – just one of the many distinctions that belong to singer and songwriter Carol Connors, who co-wrote the song with Bill Conti and Ayn Robbins. You may know Connors from her early career; in 1956, she was the lead singer in a little group known as The Teddy Bears, which also included Phil Spector. Spector wrote their best-known song, To Know Him is to Love Him, specifically to show off Connors’ voice, and in 1958 the song reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was such a powerful song that it attracted the attention of Elvis Presley, who, not long after hearing it, sent for Photo by Timothy Fielding Connors and began a serious relationship with her.
