2019 Commodore’s Award The Commodore’s Award is presented annually to a person, or persons, to recognize out- standing contribution to Hampton Yacht Club events and activities. Tyler Moore was awarded the 2019 Commodores Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Hampton Yacht Club Junior and Racing Programs. As Junior Committee Chair, Tyler Moore went beyond and above what is expected from a Committee Chair. He always made himself available to help out, no matter what. For example, Tyler was hands on with the delivery, unloading and assembling our new Fevas. He was all hands on deck during our hurricane preparations for the Junior Sailing boats. Tyler allowed use of his boat for Junior sailing programs when needed. He was often seen working with, and coaching our Junior Sailors. He was always available for the numerous phone calls for help and guidance. Tyler provided the energy and vision to take our Junior Program and make it into a new age junior sailing program for all kids to enjoy. Changes incorporated into the Junior Program during 2019 are designed to keep our Junior Members active in HYC Sailing through adolescence and into young adulthood. Because of Tyler, 2019 saw the transition from our two person dinghy to the RS Feva, a durable 12-foot boat with an asymmetric spinnaker. We incorporated changes to the Junior Program to be reflective of the demographics and changing needs of parents. With urging and guidance from Tyler, HYC made significant changes to the Junior Program, including increased Junior Privileges and Junior Responsibili- ties. We created a HYC Junior Membership. We developed Policies and Procedures for Junior Members to check out club owned Fevas & Optis, and parent use of HYC powerboats for coaching. We implemented the J/70 Racing Pilot Pro- gram. We have also made future plans to conduct foiling clinics and conduct High Performance Boat Classes. Tyler was also directly responsible for the successful 2019 Junior Racing Program. Much of this success is due to our joint racing program with Norfolk Yacht and Country Club he set up, negotiated and helped to manage. David McConaughy

Clyde W. Winters Junior Award This year’s Clyde Winters Junior Award was awarded to our overall best junior athlete, Parker Moore. I have had the fortune of coaching Parker this fall season. Parker has expressed humility about how much he still has to learn about sailing and therefore he is always focused and driven, both on and off the water. This has shown in his fall results in high school sailing. He helped Hampton Roads Academy get to fourth place overall in VISA Champs, where he had all top 5 finishes, and third place overall in TCIS Champs. Parker even competed in HYC's Fall Fling on his dad's 505 and finished the last race of the day with a bullet! HYC looks forward to the many great regattas Parker has ahead of him. COMMODORE’S LETTER TO THE MEMBERSHIP Submitted by Leigh Chapman Fellow Members, I want to give a big shout out and sincere thank you to our Past Commodore Dave McConaughy. Dave has provided a great example for me and the other Board members, and served the club with distinction as Commodore for 2019. Hard to rile, he handles every issue with aplomb and uses his considerable communication skills to assuage upset members and settle matters in an effective, matter-of-fact manner. I admire his ability to keep perspective, and prioritize the needs of the club in a way that has kept us all moving forward! And to Wheeler, our Past, Past Commodore who is leaving the Board: I can’t say enough great things! Mark is a detail guy, with an engineer’s attention to fact-based decision making. My Dad once asked if I was making a particular decision with my head or my heart. Suffice it to say that we all know Mark’s heart always points him in the right direction for this club, but he has led the Board with a sharp mind and an even sharper pencil! We all owe a big debt of gratitude to Sue Briggs, who once again volunteered her crafting skills to create the wonderful holiday tree ornaments in support of the HYC Junior Program. The Board greatly appreciates Sue’s annual contribution, and looks forward to another successful season with our long-running Junior Program. Our staff did an amazing job throughout the 2019 holiday season. We are blessed with a tremendously effective and customer-oriented group of seasoned professionals who toil on our behalf and are dedicated to getting every job done to the best of their ability. And to those staff and IT volunteers who helped us get through the computer hiccup in early December: THANK YOU! We quite literally could not have done it without you. A quick introduction to our newest Board members; I hope you’ll greet them all around the club and get to know their friendly faces: Jay D. Dunbar. Born and raised in Virginia Beach and the Outer Banks of NC, Jay married Rita Adams in 1983. They have 2 daughters, Chelsea and Kelly, both married. Chelsea just had a boy, Oliver. Kelly is expecting in May 2020. Jay is the owner of Superior Pawn Co and Superior Guns & Range located on Mercury Boulevard in Hampton. Jay graduated with an associate degree in General Studies from Northern Virginia Community College; a bachelor’s degree from Averett College and an MBA from Auburn University. In his free time, he loves boating (any type), hunting, fishing and reading. Jenn Hollock. Jenn joined HYC in 2015 to learn to sail and meet new friends. She immediately enrolled in the Learn to Sail program and was hooked. Now you can find her racing Sonars with HYC Women's Sailing, racing big boats on Wednesdays and weekends, and cruising her Beneteau around the Bay in search of the best crab cakes and ice cream. Jenn has 23 years of military service and is married to Mike Hollock. They have one daughter, Alyssa, who attends Colorado State University. Ed Munson. Ed is a retired Broadcaster. He moved back to Hampton Roads after running the CBS station in Phoenix for 10 years. Prior to his last position, Ed was Vice President of Sales for LIN Television Corp., overseeing all advertising sales on the company’s 28 TV stations and digital sites. Ed previously served as Co-Vice President for LIN, directing the operations of the company’s east coast stations. Prior to that, he served for 10 years as Regional Vice-President and General Manager of LIN’s NBC WAVY TV and Fox 43 stations in Norfolk. A native of Louisville, Kentucky, he has a Bachelor of Arts degree, cum laude, in Mass Communications from Western Kentucky University. Ed and his wife Karen recently moved back to Suffolk to be with their three grown children and five grandchildren. Ed and Karen are avid golfers and boaters.

Finally, a lot of folks have been congratulating me on becoming the “first,” but I recently discovered that I am, in fact, the second! I was perusing the pictures in the stairwell of previous Commodores, and there it is. The proof is hanging there, on the left, near the top of the stairs. I know you’ll have to see it to believe it and you may even find it hard to fathom. But I pledge to be true to my roots and do my best serving the club as the second… Blond Commodore. Thanks to John Heinke for breaking that glass ceiling for all of us. Enjoy the longer days of January! Leigh

Shout out to our up and coming sailor, Parker Moore, for winning the Clyde Winters Junior Award at the HYC Awards Night! We cannot wait to see what the future holds for this bright sailor. Penguin Floats, circa 1954, in the foreground ! The floats were steel barges built at Newport News Shipyard after WWII and set on pilings on the south side of the old club house. They were in place from approximately 1948 to 1958.The Penguin class was de- signed by Phillip Rhodes in 1939 and is still active today. Most at HYC were home built and vigorously raced in the annual 4th of July Regatta and on Sunday afternoons in the Spring and Fall. Can you identify the youngster standing by the green boat? Hint, he is a retired Virginia Pilot ! The Jet 14 never caught on at HYC. This Jet 14 skipper was a Shipyard VP, JB Woodward. Notice: Recent computer outage. Many of us were impacted by the recent computer outage. It was caused by malicious "malware" that got into our business systems and rendered them useless. This is a relatively new "ransom" virus that encrypted not only all of our business data, but also all the supporting software like the operating system and database applications. It took a few days to recover as we had to update our hardware, re-install our applications, and set up better protection. As a part of recovering, we installed a more robust anti-virus and failure recovery software on all workstations and our new server. Next week we will be setting up a rapid recovery system that should allow us to get back on the air within minutes (rather than days) should an event like this happen again. Hackers keep trying and the hacks get more clever.

HYC CUP

FINAL STANDINGS – 2019 The 2019 HYC Big Boat racing season is in the books… and the name of that book is Danger Paws. Competing in all eight HYC CUP events, the Melges 24 blew away all comers to finish first by an overwhelming 13 points while obliterating the previous highest point total… set by them in 2017. In so doing, Neil and Lis won their fleet in Down the Bay, Southern Bay Race Week, Doublehand, Hampton Sprints, Masters Race, Plantation Light, and Gaboon. This dominant performance wins them the CUP for the 2nd time in its four-year history. While Neil and Lis’ dominance removed much of the suspense regarding the top spot, the battle for second lasted right up to the final leg of the Gaboon Race where, by winning C Fleet, 2016 champion, Callinectes (Ben Cuker), pulled into a tie for second place for the year with newcomer to the HYC CUP podium, Seeker (Alan Johnson). Seeker had a great year, winning their fleet in Down the Bay, Hampton Sprints, and Plantation Light, while Callinectes continued as a model of consistency, winning their fleet in Masters and Gaboon and finishing very strong in several other events. In addition, Callinectes continued their run of being the only HYC boat to compete in every HYC- sponsored big boat event since the inception of the HYC CUP four years ago! Congratulations to Ben and his crew for this record of consistently high performance and strong support of our HYC program. Below are listed the Top 10 places in the final HYC CUP standings: 1st Danger Paws Neil Ford/Lis Biondi 31 points 2nd Callinectes Ben Cuker 18 points Seeker Alan Johnson “ 4th Sitella Ian Hill 14 points 5th Diablo Greg /Carrie Cutter 13 points Feather Phil Briggs “ 7th Bluejacket Andy Armstrong 12 points 8th Cool Change Rusty Burshell 11 points 9th Roundabout Alan Bomar 8 points 10th Myrage Christian Schaumloffel 7 points Riff Raff Don DeLoatch “ Wham Bam Dave Taylor “ Nanuq Glenn Doncaster “ In all, 41 HYC boats participated at some point in the 2019 Big Boat season.

WET SLIP ELECTRIC USE Cold weather is here and it’s time to review the practical side of winter electric use. It boils down to this: Electrical use should be limited to maintaining ONLY enough heat on board to ensure no damage to vulnerable components on board. Keeping the boat nice and warm so you can have it at comfort level when you visit requires far more power than the dock electrical system is designed to provide. Individual boat power consumption is periodically monitored. Excessive consumption could result in receipt of that dreaded form letter that says “… your observed usage exceeds the category of consumption you have selected and… ”
